Rather than marking my stops with a soapstone as shown here, I'll often drop a tack just short of where I want to stop and then run through it before I stop my bead. A lot harder to miss or second guess than your soapstone marks.

Nice demo. I understand the purpose behind this video and it is to teach beginning welders how to plan out your work. One thing that stands out to me, however, is the lack of explanation about the importance of staggering stops and starts when possible, pushing the puddle with spray arc, never starting on top of another weld start point, and so on. All these things should have been incorporated in this video to give a good all around explanation of the value of planning your tacks, weld sequence, and welding direction. Other than that, great video and thank you for sharing!! Cheers

I always have trouble with thermal distortion, especially on square tubing... ALSO: I noticed at the 10:00 mark that your head was in a dense cloud of smoke. Gotta watch that or maybe build a fume extractor. I have friends who are dead now because they didn't take stuff like this seriously enough. You will still be a man if you use PPE.

You do all your ends first with just a slight over wrap around them leaving a 1/8 landing, than flip the work piece and weld the shortest first which should have been no#1, not no#4 - starting from the out side into the corners leaving enough for room for another weld to butt into or land onto, than start welding your longest weld from the ends into the corner's your two welds butt into each other so you end up with say a 1/4 weld. why not to wrap around corners or edges is under cutting or pulling back slightly to prevent under cutting, than your out of the root. What you think is faster is not! Start with your edges first when the material is cool this will prevent under cutting thinning of edges - if it gets painted you will see it, and that is where cracks start from, because of vibration and expansion & contraction. So 1/8 + 1/8 = 1/4, The 1/8 is your landing, and you also want to clap your work piece down onto the table, to minimize warpage. Take the skittles out side, relax, Never be in a hurry to weld. When your welding you should be comfortable, you should also check the movement prior to welding so your not hitting something or getting hung up, use the table to put your Mig hose onto it, so it's free flowing in it's movement not rubbing on the edge of a table causing tugging movements, think of how a snake moves. Take the time to set you machine up "first" for the work piece and travel speed, use some scrap pieces, just rehearse on how your going to weld and if you need to mark it out using your soap stone or a marker point, something you can easy ready see. Your corner is your heavy, properly done it will take the heat 🔥 naturally, learn to move over tacks don't grind them down learn to adjust for them and don't make them so big. You have a engineered flat table, use claps to hold the work piece down, when your tacking - I noticed the gaps as you were welding, I saw the light coming from under the plates, that causes pulling, warpage or cause your tacks to crack or brake as you come up to them with the heat. Plan and place your tacks use a tape measure and set them accordingly to the work piece in equal spacing. If you have made mistake like putting a piece up side down, than redo it, cut it off clean it off and redo it again! I do not want to hear excuses! I do not care if your delessitic in dyslexia! If you saw the mistake, correct it the first time period!. When your fitting learning to prepare the work piece is just as important as welding it, make sure to put a slight bevel on the edges than when your tacking it, the tacks will natural be slightly lower than the weld, learn to cut and snip the end of the wire off after each tack or weld, that way you know your have a positive clean contact for the root on the next tack or weld. Again I don't want to hear your excuses. And I don't care what other's are doing, or what they think.
