I want to start out by saying a big thank you to Cub Cadet for sponsoring this video!
Today we're taking another look at the Cub Cadet ZTS2 54 Zero Turn Mower after mowing all types of terrain and putting several hours on it. You'll see this mower taking on hills close to 20° and also see how well it steers around some tight landscaping curves. If you like to mow in circles or mow stripes, you'll see how well this mower handles both situations. Feel free to comment down below with your thoughts and questions.

My shop (employee, not owner) sells these, and plenty of them. Only repeat issue is the parking brake is sometimes fiddly to engage fully- you have to use a bit of brute force if it's sticking. Also, be aware that the steering system is actually very robust. However, multiple impacts to the front wheels (hitting the same old rock or root every weekend) _will_ wreck the steering, cueing up expensive repairs.

Is the steering supposed to catch/bind at the fully turned points? I just bought one and ran it for the first time today. I can feel a catch when turning 180° to the point it sort of jerks the steering wheel. And, does it have toe-in? I really didn't notice before running it but if one wheel is aligned straight, the other is aligned to the inside.

Another one of the big advantages of the ZTS series is in slippery wet conditions. The paddock to the north of my house is occasionally mowed by the factory which owns it, and they cant mow a boggy area in a traditional lap bar zero turn as as soon as one wheel begins to slip it simply turns uncontrollably, so they normally leave it until it gets a few foot tall and then use a brushcutter to knock it down. My ZTS1 simply pushes through the slippery sections and it does not cause an issue at all, so I mow it weekly now, and being shorter it seems to be drying out a fair bit better too

That's great to hear! My ZTS does great in the ditches too, especially if it's a little wet out. My lap bar ZT gets drawn down into the ditch, so I have to be very careful not to get stuck.

@@michaelsutherland9069 Hey Michael, I've been very happy with the way it stays on the hills. The front wheels that steer and have thick rubber tread definitely help and make a difference on hills. When going down a hill, it's always best to take it slow and make sure there isn't anything dangerous at the bottom that you could slide into.

I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. kzfaq.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

So it seems like when you want back up a bit, which happens quite often when mowing, you don't have to move the key or lever into reverse and press that hazard thing. That's only if you want to mow in reverse for a long stretches. Is that correct? Seems like you backed up and straightened out pretty easily without engaging the Reverse knob/key.
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder Жыл бұрын
The safety item for reverse is something you only do when you first start the mower. After that, you can go forward and back easily with the foot control. The steering is very tight so you can sometimes mow without backing up at the end of each stripe.

How is the steering effort? I've read of complaints with some zero turn steering wheel mowers that the steering is too stiff. Some of the commercial Cub Cadet steering wheel mowers have power steering. If it's stiff only when motionless, I'm ok with that. If you turned the front wheels while still, you would rip up the turf.
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
It's not too bad for not being power steering. I grew up with a steering wheel mower and then went to a lap bar mower before this one. If you could demo one from a dealer, I think that would be best. I don't notice the turn getting ripped with this mower.

I'm getting close to replacing my 6 yr old husky GT54LS garden tractor that I seldom use for anything but mowing. The Husky handles the small but steep hills on my 3/4 acre property as long as I'm not mowing wet grass. But it's a little shaky in at least one spot. Questions: Do you find the Cub Cadet ZT mower, or zero turn mowers in general, to be rear weighted such that there's a risk of backendering the machine starting up a steep grade of say 30 degrees? MY Husky will take this hill coming off my gravel driveway without a problem but it is, of course, front engine so that weight up front eliminates any danger of flipping backwards. Also would you happen to know whether the seat on the ZTS1 allows for installing arm rest as a purchased option because I don't see any grab handles on the Cub Cadet like my Husky has to hold onto when mowing across hills.

At first, the steering wheel idea appealed to me. But is it possible turn tightly without locking one of the rear wheels? Doesn't that tear the turf? I know many don't bother to do it, but with a lapbar, to turn to the right you would put the right wheel in reverse while the left wheel would still be rotating forward.
@MarkThomasBuilder

This mower really does a nice job of not tearing the turf like a lapbar mower. The front wheels turn very sharp and the one tire moves fast while the other wheel stops or may slightly go in reverse.

Just picked up a zts2 50 today. I didn't notice it at first, but after mowing for about 15 minutes and getting off of the machine, I realized that the machine has a pretty strong high frequency vibration from the engine itself. My feet were actually a bit tingly which persisted up to an hour later. There was a lot of vibration coming through the seat as well. Is this considered "normal" for this machine?
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder Жыл бұрын
I also drive a Exmark commercial mower during the week and it probably vibrates a little less. I'd say there's some vibration in this unit, but nothing too crazy. When I sharpen my blades, I make sure they're balanced. Sometimes factory blades aren't balanced properly and can cause some vibration. The other CC lap bar version mower seems about the same amount of vibration.
@chris2790
@chris2790 Жыл бұрын
@@MarkThomasBuilder Thanks for the reply. This is engine vibration, w/out the blades engaged. The frame is super rigid and the engine is bolted directly to the mounting plate with no isolation mounts, etc. so most of the engine vibes are transmitted throughout the frame. The 50" uses the 7000 series 23 hp Kohler, while your 54" has the Kohler 24 hp so maybe engine harmonics are more pleasant/less severe. It appears that CC relies on their cushy seat and rubber floor mats to attempt mitigate vibration transmitted to the operator. They have the following description on their website for these mowers: "Soft touch steering wheel and a vibration dampening rubber floor mat provides sure footing and maximum comfort". Both the steering wheel and the rubber floor mats are relatively hard, although they are not hard plastic. On my machine, they fail to do an adequate job, not to mention that I also noticed a tingling sensation on the bottom of my thighs right above the back of my knees. This is where they are close to the seat hard mount point on the mower - so the seat isn't doing a great job at isolating vibrations either. This is pretty much a non-starter for me as I'm not willing to risk my health over something like this. My feet felt abnormal up to an hour or so afterwards. I'm in good health, no diabetes or anything. I don't have any issues on my old craftsman lawn tractor... I did call CC up and was routed through an MTD call center, then finally to Troy Built, to report the issue. I'm to take it to a service center and have them check it out. I'm not too keen on that as I have pretty low expectations of an acceptable resolution. At a minimum, they'll need to use a measuring device to check the vibration levels and that they are below the acceptable exposure levels. We'll see... Editing to say I compared the new CC to my old craftsman that has a single cyl. 19 hp Kohler. It vibrates more than I remember, but the CC seems to be a bit more intense. I guess I'll put down a layer of 1/2" dense spongy foam mat w/ 1/4" ply over it on the foot deck. Also get some isolation mounts to put the seat on. Tingles my butt as is...

I like the video but it kind of feels like you didn't realize Cub Cadet has been making steering wheel zt mowers for a while now. I have the SX54 and got it in I believe May 2017. Part of it is probably Cub Cadet acting like this "synchro steer" tech is brand new technology they came recently out with while pretending their previous ones didn't exist. Very odd of them. Really like my SX54 and it handles hills like a champ with no problems turning sideways on them. I don't know what grade my hill is but I feel like it is 20 or maybe more for half of it and I've never once felt it unsafe or got stuck. It also doesn't tear up grass when doing sharp turns on flat or inclined ground.

After that, you turn the mower deck on and use your right foot to go forward or back. When it comes to mowing, it's only your foot and steering wheel that does the work.

I heard, while in a turn, the front wheels can tear the grass if not careful. Have you seen that?
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder Жыл бұрын
Mine have not done that. If you're not moving and turn the wheel back and forth, then yes it may do a little tearing of the grass. The best advice is to turn when moving as much as possible.

I have an RZT steering wheel 50” fab deck, 4 years old. Is the steering wheel easy to turn on tight turns? Mine is a two hand affair to make a tight turn, and it takes significant effort. I may have to trade up.
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 2 ай бұрын
I normally use 2 hands if I'm making a complete 180° turn, but I wouldn't say it takes significant effort. I turn the steering wheel while moving, but I'd say it would probably take some effort it I tried to turn the wheel standing still,

@@MarkThomasBuilder Thanks. That’s the disadvantage with a steering wheel zero turn then. It doesn’t take any effort with a bar operated zero turn. It’s a compromise I’ll have to live with.

I bought the ZTS2 50” model back in March ‘22. Now it’s September and here are a few thoughts about the mower… Firstly, the Ultima series mowers seem to be really well designed in general, whether a lap bar model or with Synchro-Steer wheel. One thing to consider is the S2 models have a heavier grade Hydro-Drive transmission (ZT-2800), which might be advantageous if you’re planning to do any hauling or a lot of mowing on steep hills. I had previously been using a 20 year old John Deere SST16 zero turn mower with steering wheel, so I was already accustomed to the basic operating system…. But of course the John Deere did not have steerable front wheels. (that JD design has been discontinued for many years now). With that being said, the Cub Cadet Synchro-Steer is nothing short of amazing. It really is the best of both worlds… variable counter rotating hydraulic rear transmissions and steerable front wheels. But what I didn’t anticipate was how useful this would be with only one arm to steer with. Early in July, I was in an accident that dislocated my shoulder and severely tore my rotator cuff, requiring surgery. With my arm tied up in a sling, there was no way I would’ve been able to safely use a lap bar mower. The Synchro-Steer steering wheel system was easily usable with one arm allowing me to continue mowing my lawn following shoulder surgery. Overall, the mower, along with the Kohler 7000 Pro series engine has been performing flawlessly. Very highly recommended!

Mowing cut speed? Blade tip speed?

I believe the top speed is either 7 or 8 mph. I'm not sure of the blade speed though. It cuts well, so they seem to be moving fast.
