This is just terrific stuff, even if it does give me many hours and months of work to do. I've now spent some hours on your channel and have made many notes to incorporate lots of this kind of thing into my own practice. Thank you for your generosity of spirit in unselfishly sharing so much quality technical content. You're lucky I don't live in the north-east, or I'd probably be round bothering you for private instruction!

Graham, thank you for taking the time to comment and for your kind words. I am confident you'll have it cracked in no time at all and would suggest you focus on the CAGED system and Chord Rotation videos which I uploaded recently, and then move on to the content in the Spicy 2-5-1s video. They provide further breakdown of the material in this video which will speed up the process for you! Feel free to reach out at my website if you would ever like to book an online session in, I always enjoy speaking to new musicians. Best, Charles

Great! Thank you Chales for this lesson. Would you be so kind and show us this approach with the application of melodic minor scale?

Nice.. thought Family Of Four only relates to Dominant chords.

and their related 2 chords. These examples take it to a ludicrous extreme in order to fully comprehend the possibilities. I'd recommend sticking to dominant chords, their 2 chord, and the vii chord of the key (the half diminished). Cheers!

LOVE THIS! But, I'm a little confused by the minor 3rd substitution. I'm familiar with the TT sub and the Barris Harris family of four concept. For example, I'm not sure how the family of four figures in substituting an F# minor a minor 3rd down (or a C minor a minor 3rd up) for the A minor in the 473621 progression. Sometimes the minor 3rd up or down seems to work and other times it sounds awkward depending on the inversion/voice leading. I love these lessons Charles, thank you!

The substitutions are exactly as you say. You are able to substitute up or down and minor 3rd or tritone through the family of four. However, these exercises are taken to the extreme and will inevitably sound over the top/awkward. Let your ear be your guide, as it sounds like you already are, and use the ones you like and avoid the ones you don't! The point of the exercise is to strengthen your knowledge of the parent scale. If you can substitute notes on the fly it shows just how comfortable you are with the 'correct' notes and the substitution concept too. I would add that Barry Harris only substitutes dominant chord which are going 'home'. Other players, such as Dexter Gordon, apply the approach more liberally to different chord types and contexts, as I do herein. Thank you for your kind words and comments, I hope you feel a bit clearer on the concept I was presenting in this one! Cheers
