The rivets allow float and movement between the two, which stops the rotor from warping under extreme heat due to different epansion rates of the metals. The design also saves weight
@videomaniac108
@videomaniac108 4 жыл бұрын
The rotor, due to the fact that the heat of friction is being generated there, will be at a higher temperature than the hat. Because of this higher temperature difference, the rotor will expand radially outward at a greater rate than the hat. This difference in expansion will cause a rotor that is rigidly bolted to the hat to cause mechanical stress on the hat, pulling it outward and thus distorting it. A floating rotor can expand outward without inducing mechanical stress on the hat, because the two pieces are not rigidly attached.

Bit of somewhat misinformation here. The Belleville washers are just to keep if from rattling in street use. Even with them turned the other way around (i.e., to where they are applying spring tension on the fastener), there is still axial float but with the in the "anti-rattle" orientation, pad knock-back can still occur since the force to compress the washer more is greater then the force to knock the pad / piston(s) back in the caliper a few thou.. Along with that, there was no mention of the radial float function of the setup. The holes in the rotor's are actually radial slots (not perfectly drilled holes like in the hat). This is specifically for thermal expansion in a radial direction to prevent belling of the assemble like 1pc (and bolted 2pc) rotors do.

What happens if I put 2 piece rotors on floating calipers?
@CJ-ty8sv
@CJ-ty8sv 2 жыл бұрын
@@Phuong_Nguyen_ The caliper style / type makes no difference. All the Pro's, Con's and function of two piece rotors applies the same, regardless of the type of caliper that is straddling it. Floating calipers still function on the same hydraulic principle as an fixed opposed piston caliper but are cheap to manufacture and offer more wheel clearance which is the two primary reasons why OEM use them on almost everything. Many people misunderstand how a floating and fixed opposed piston calipers function and how they really function the same regardless of the fact that one float to allow for clamp force to be applied to the outboard side of the disk where as an opposed piston caliper has a fixed body with pistons on both the inboard and outboard side to apply the clamp pressure on both sides. While multi opposed piston calipers have several advantages over a single piston floating caliper, the way they both apply clamping pressure between the pads and the rotor is still the same.
@Phuong_Nguyen_
@Phuong_Nguyen_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@CJ-ty8sv I understand how floating calipers work. But someone said it might feel weird if I put floating rotors with floating calipers because the rotors can shift side to side and the floating caliper will push the rotor and move it laterally a little bit. I just don’t wanna waste $800 on some floating rotors for my calipers.

I would think that the noise from a 2 piece rotor cooling would be caused by the dissimilar metals shrinking at different rates as they cool and moving against each other.

@CJ-ty8sv

Other than the typical reduced unsprung weight and reduced rotation inertia, they really aren't for a "performance gain" per se but rather more for durability and longevity. However, when on the level of true race tires (slicks) and true at the limit threshold braking, many drivers can notice a difference upon initial braking entering a braking zone on the track due to piston knock-back caused by knuckle flex in the previous corner. What is noticed is excessive pedal travel and thus effectively causing later than intended braking which can cause you to obviously take to turn wrong since you cant scrub the speed or overshooting the turn. While the difference might be in the hundredths to maybe a 10th or two of a second, if you are driving a car that is entering a braking zone at 120mph or more, that can be quite late on braking. Even at 120mph, a 10th of a second is almost a 20ft delay in braking (this distance is obviously greater with more MPH upon entering the braking zone) and if you are a good enough driver that is truly waiting till the very last minute to brake and are truly threshold braking, that 20ft can mean all the difference in ending up going too wide and the guy behind you overtaking you on the inside. The thing is, slower cars that do not generate the same cornering loads as faster cars wont necessarily have the same degree of knuckle flex and thus wont have the same degree as knock-back. It takes a certain can and certain driver to really see the advantage other than the typical weight. This is the problem, most "enthusiast" either don't have cars that can generate performance in other ways to see where a full floating rotor setup has a performance advantage and/or they are simply not pushing the car to the limits that they think that they are. The belling effect from thermal expansion of a one piece OE type disc is a major contributor to done drilled disc cracking among other problems. With the two piece floating setup, the "belling" is eliminated as long as there is enough radial float to allow for full thermal expansion.

Indirectly yes, they can help even out pad wear but warping rotors comes from heat so them floating can't save them from warping but can give you a bit of leeway if a rotor is slightly warped.

@speedacademy 7 жыл бұрын
Floating has to be 2-piece, there's no such thing as a single piece floating rotor.
@CJ-ty8sv
@CJ-ty8sv 4 жыл бұрын
@@speedacademy Eh, watch how you word that though.. Yes, it is correct that you cant have a single piece floating rotor BUT you can have a 2-piece non-floating rotor.. They are called "Bolted 2-piece" assemblies. Most of Wilwood's setups are this exactly (i.e., a Two piece assembly (iron disc and aluminum hat) but the disc is solidly bolted to the hat and there is no float between the two). AP Racing also has setups like this too because many of the dirt track roundy-round cars use this setup for the weight advantage but dont really care about the float (many dont need the float). So to truly answer GEMWRC's question, NO, a 2 piese is not "necessarily" the same as "full floating" BUT if it is full float, then it definitely is 2-piece.

AdventuresWithAlan to allow the disc to expand in relation to the bell (the disc will expand at a different rate due to the disc being the bit that gets hottest and aluminium and steel expand at different rates), to reduce the effects of warping should that occur. but they aren't as well suited as fixed 2 piece discs on the road as they require more maintenance and make more noise.
