Glad to see a new vid. Boat #1 What determines how much line you let out or take in for towing? Are there certain parameters for different types of vessels or conditions that you must stick to or is it all mostly experience? Boat #2 Nice and simple and nice. Boat #3 I've noticed that when you're pulling sail boats that have grounded you pull at an angle. I kinda understand how that's helps get it unstuck. Is there any possibility of damage to the fin thing on the bottom that is stuck in the sand? lol, I don't know what it's called. I'm assuming that was a tip at the end of boat #3. How often do you get tips? I think that's the first one I've seen on your channel. :( Keep it up please. I enjoy watching.

Hey Joseph. Glad you're enjoying my content! These are all good questions. #1 The length of the towline I let out depends on a combination of the size of the boat, the sea conditions, and the area I'm towing in. There's no hard and fast rule for this. You often don't see in these videos because I cut it out, but I usually start with a some random length, get moving and observe how the boat is towing, and then adjust the towline length in or out (usually out) accordingly. Bigger boats = longer line. Rough conditions = longer line. Tight quarters = shorter line.

#3 The pointy fin thing under a sailboat is called a keel. There are many different designs for keels, but the only one I really have to worry about is called a wing keel because it has little "wings" coming off the bottom that can breakoff if I put too much side load on them by either spinning to sharply or heeling (tipping) the boat over too much. Pulling at an angle helps in two ways. 1, it twists the boat so you get a bit of movement which helps break the suction force with the bottom, and 2, it heels the boat over which reduces the draft (depth) of the boat making it float a bit better.

Yes that was a tip at the end. There is no rhyme or reason to getting tipped. Some of the boats I think will tip don't and others that I don't think will do. I'd say overall, probably about 1/2 of the tows I've done have tipped, but I can go an entire month and only get tipped once or twice, and the next month almost every tow tips

@@CaptKenO Keel. I knew that. And I understand what you mean about the wings. I thought pulling at an angle would help break the suction but never thought about it heeling the boat over to reduce the draft. Makes a lot of sense. Do you ever purchase farther up on the boat for more leverage and to keel it over more and up your chances? Very cool stuff. I always enjoy learning anything and everything. Thanks again man.

Yes I have. Before I started recording my tows I had a sailboat run so far out of the channel at a high tide that he would've had to stay there for a couple of months before we got a high enough tide to pull him back. He had a giant winch for the main halyard on the opposite side of the boat from where I was trying to pull from, so we went to that to try and heel the boat over and just drag him sideways. It kind of worked until it slipped off. The guy offered to get into the water and tie the line around the keel...so we went all the way over the deck of the boat to the keel and boy did we get that boat to heel over! I dragged it sideways like that for over 200 yards back to the channel

😂😂😂 It started because when I have to write up the invoices it needs a destination...and it's where I towed them to, so 🤷😂

@@CaptKenO I really do, dont know if you know Vancouver but we are the largest port with super freighters on the Westcoast and are blessed with the ocean and lots of large lakes and rivers. We have the Canadian coast guard here of course for serious marine issues but for local non emergency we also have the coast guard auxiliary which is volunteer and will help most people when needed. We also have fee for hire services Ex. Towboat but none of them have YT channels I am aware of…
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
@@vancity2349I did not know that. Will your coast guard and/or auxiliary tow boats, or do they try and leave that to the commercial tow operators? I don't know if it's because we have such a concentration of tow operators here on the gulf coast or not, but the coast guard tries to avoid it at all possible. They've helped out when it's been too rough for us to go far or if they're far offshore outside our coverage area...but otherwise they'll just pull the people off and leave the boat. As far as KZfaq channels, a lot of them seem to do the short video formats (Instagram, tiktok, Facebook etc.) instead of a "KZfaq length" video

@@CaptKenO We have lots of auxiliary units spread around and tend to be the go to for smaller issues, ex out of gas, broken down beached etc in the inside waters. For bigger jobs and the larger vessels definitely the commercial guys, tugs etc do the big job’s especially on the outside waters with huge waves and currents…

In your opinion is there one type of boater that is more prone to "get in trouble" Jet Ski, pontoon boat, weekend boater etc..? Thanks for the videos.
@CaptKenO
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Thanks PVP! Despite jet ski operators being notoriously bad at following rules and/or inexperienced, I've only had to tow maybe half a dozen over the last few years, with two of those being sinking issues not caused by the operator. That's not to say they don't have issues, I just think that when they do more people can and do help because they are easy to tow. I'd definitely say that less experienced boaters are the most likely to run into the issues, both mechanical and/or operator induced. You could call them the weekend warriors except they are out during the week too :)
