How I assemble 2 way migratory pallets for beekeeping. I salvage scrap lumber to save some money, but obviously new lumber could be used. This video isn't necessarily about how to keep bees on pallets, this is more focused on how to put them together. I think having a jig like this is beneficial and hopefully someone will benefit from this video. #beehive #honeybee #diy

Cut sheet: Plywood: 33 1/4 x 21 (2x4)s you need 3 cut at 23 (1x3)s you need 2 cut at 33 1/4 Back: (1) @ 3/8 x 3/4 x 31 3/4 Sides and front: (3) @ 3/8 x 3/4 x 19 7/8 Middle: (1) @ 3/8 x 2 1/4 x 18 3/8 Optional, remove some wood on both ends for W clip. This is not critical so you can skip this step if you want. 3/8 can be substituted for 3/4 if you prefer more space under your brood chamber. I prefer 3/8. 3/4 will be easier if you don’t have a good table saw.

Would 1x4 work instead of 1x3?
@DRIECUTHoney
@DRIECUTHoney 3 ай бұрын
@@lavenderbridges yes, absolutely. 1x3 is just cheap and I had some left over from another project. My pallets are built completely out of scrap and recycled materials.

Thanks! Whatevwr the reason, I’m having a hard time finding one by threes in my area. I didn’t know if structurally it would make a difference and I appreciate the quick response.

@@lavenderbridges 1x3 are commonly used for furring strips and are not made from select wood. That’s why they are cheap. 1x4 will work just fine.

Great video, this is why I watch utube, thank you much. Prepping for more packages in a few weeks and considering I need to move beyond SBB and get on board with the 2 way pallet theme. I know that pallets and lids go together and thinking I am gunna make the leap this year, I'll be watching that next. Thanks again.

That’s a good idea, in my opinion. I’ll probably keep a stand at the house, but everything else will go on pallets. I even like sitting mating nucs on them. Eventually I’ll make a pro/con video about pallets. You might find my video about the modified hand truck useful if you haven’t seen it. I move pallets with a modified dolly since I don’t have a fork lift. Thanks for watching

They are convenient. You can always elevate them on blocks if you want the height of a stand. Easy to move around with modified dolly. My out yard doesn’t have the best access

Thanks Keith. A lot of 2 way pallets, and 4 way, are built similar to these. At least I think so. I haven’t seen much on how to actually put them together. So I figured this might help someone who is starting to consider pallets as they expand to multiple yards.

How far on the back and front of your pallets do the 2x4’s extend out from the plywood to create the gap? Thanks.

I use 1.25” past on the back side. To be honest I can’t remember why I chose that. If I had a reason I can’t remember. The point is to let air pass through so they don’t overheat in on road. Now I just keep using the same spacing so they are all the same. Sorry I don’t have a more insightful answer lol

@@DRIECUTHoney accuracy is good, repeatability is Great. If you are stacking, repeatability is better than accuracy every day IMO. = jigs and stopblocks.

Yes, I run it through my table saw. If you only have a circular saw, you can make a table saw like jig, should be plenty of info online about hacks like that. But a table saw is what I use

@@MinnesotaBeekeeper okay, lol yeah I’ve seen pictures, but I prefer solid BB. A lot of my pallets have holes in the because it’s used concrete forms, and I staple #8 over the holes. Nice and simple, what about one of those mini pallets set up got nucs🤨a 4 in 2, not sure that made sense.🤔And if you ran 4 nucs in a row would you want venting in the bottom so they would have less chance of over heating?
@DRIECUTHoney
@DRIECUTHoney Жыл бұрын
I believe Ian runs pallets special built nucs. I think they hold 3 nucs and he calls the “nuc batteries” if I’m not mistaken. The are pretty nifty. Each nuc is slanted slightly for drainage since the middle nuc is facing the opposite direction to limit drift. I can do some research and build one if that would help you out. Personally I don’t use screened BB in my area. Some people do.

@@DRIECUTHoney ya that sounds like what I'm thinking, not screened bottom just venting I was thinking if you had 4 the center ones might get hot was all. More or less just bouncing ideas. 🙂

@@dcsblessedbees they would probably be okay. Some guys will stick coins under the lids to let a little heat escape. I’ve played around with just sticking a twig under the corner of a lid. I just wonder if sometimes it might not be what they need? Now days I’m more inclined to just let them regulate the space best they can. Maybe dark paint wouldn’t be ideal. However dark is better early season when they need heat. Always trade offs lol
