Hi, here we have 2 faulty PS5 DualSense controllers purchased from eBay from different sellers. One has a broken thumbstick, and the other has no power.
Will they be fixable?
Let's find out.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

You can't use any USB-C cable to charge a device. Many people are using cheap cables with the wrong resistors in them. Benson Leung from Google had a list of good cables online that are build using the correct resistors. If you Google his name + "cable list" you can find it easily. USB-C cables are not the same as any other cable, buying a proper one is very important. This could be the cause of this issue.
@jcreazy
@jcreazy 3 жыл бұрын
Those bad cables were banned from Amazon a few years ago. They only burned up the charging bricks though, not the devices themselves.
@glennvanspa
@glennvanspa 3 жыл бұрын
@@jcreazy Actually, they do kill devices. The Google employee I'm talking about had for example fried the power delivery chip of his Chromebook. You are right about the fact that Amazon banned them, but a lot of those cables are still floating around and are even still made and sold by other websites (and also a lot of devices manufactured in China are delivered with bad ones). But even phone companies in the west had bad cables shipped with devices. There are a lot of examples online where a bad usb-c cable damaged a device/chip.

11:51. It's a common problem that has existed ever since the PS2 era. Move the analog stick around by force will cause the edges to shave off over time. If you look right under the analog's rubber, you can see how the edge of it hit against the controller's white plastic.

I know of 40 PS4 controllers in a single building. I have used almost all of them, and I only found one that had an analog stick issue. Although I wish the controller would be fixed, I don't own any of them in the slightest. There are 3 big rooms with people divided into age groups, with the bad controller in the room with the youngest people. In that room alone, there are 16 controllers. The next room is for older people that are still quite young and also has 16 controllers. The next room is for the oldest of all, and has 8 controllers. I know that this comment got a lot off topic, but I wanted to share this info.

I can actually explain why this happened and it’s interesting there is a third-party Chinese PlayStation five charging stand this charging stand uses USBc connectors on the stand what they did is they jumped the power from one plug to the other plug so when you have two controllers plugged into the stand it basically shorts out the chip that controls power management in both controllers do not buy the USB c Charging stance they are not safe make sure you’re charging stand uses the port next to the headphone jack on the controller

Abs cool cool concept, I might plunder the buttons for my other VK63 where the chrono works and keep the donor as a nice looking watch.

USB Power Delivery should default to 5v, and any compliant power supply should never apply 9v to a device that hasn't explicitly requested it. However, there are a lot of cheap, nasty, poorly designed USB power supplies out there, and you have no way of knowing if the person who had this, was using one of those.

@@mistwolf Yes, fair enough. But they could return to Sony, receive a working one, and then sell for more money. I bought one from Amazon warehouse which was in “like new” condition. Was £37. When I opened the box it was filthy and a spring had broke in the R2 button. Looked like the previous owner had done the old switcheroo and even had the nerve to write “new” on the bottom of the box. I was able to exchange it with Sony. The replacement looked brand new.

This was a very interesting fix! But I'm surprised that Sony didn't think about over outage protection on that USB port. I've had devices where, if you plugged in a very large voltage supply on a low voltage input, the LEDs would flash quickly red or the device would dissipate so much heat quickly, something to alarm the user that it's a bad cable but without giving them a physical shock.

You may be able to bypass the IC by using a TP4056 battery charger to charge the battery. My PS4 controller didn't charge, and wasn't recognized by my PC either, to my surprise when I connected a charged up battery it fired up! So I just disconnected the original charging rail, and installed the TP4056 charger. The controller doesn't work as a wired controller anymore, but it charges fine and once it's manually synced with the PS4 it works fine wirelessly.

It is very satisfying to see the chip slide into place when the tin melts. There must be a fault in the logic of this PM chip. USB C PD defaults to 5V when there is a device with no communication. Most of these chips have programmable logic. Maybe it was fixed with the software update the controller received.

@@HavingFunRepairs right, if manufacturing is required. I’ve been working in electronics for over thirty years and I noticed that most large companies, in order to save money, use products that have been around awhile they may relabel them with an obscure part number but it is basically the same product anyone can buy. Computer companies during the seventies and eighties did this all the time. The only exception to this is specially made or custom components such as micro processors which are tailored by flashing to their specifications. ICs like power management chips have been around for some time and therefore no need for remanufacturing them. A simple check of inputs and outputs will determine compatibility with other ICs. Relabelling components or scrubbing numbers (a method favoured by the Chinese) is an old trick to insure proprietary rights. I’ve been there.

@@charlesmurphy1510 congrats on 30 years mate. Almost at 20 myself, but more towards RF side of the electronics industry. I don't have a PS5 myself. Cannot seem to bring myself towards a cost benefit for purchasing. However, I would be interested in identifying the pinout of the PMIC, if I did have a controller to poke around on. I do concur with you and agree with the strong potential that it's a relabeled common item. However, instead of stating it I think proofing and showing would yield a much greater benefit to the community. I have not done either so I'd rather not personally speculate on this potential and lead someone down an incorrect path. Even if the pinout are similar to another component, other things such as VCC and Cur tolerance may not be the same "at a glance". I could be wrong, but if it were me, it would be trial and error before stating a substitute is a definitive.
