We've been in that position, too. It's hard to set boundaries and consistently spend less than others or drop out of gift-giving completely. But, we've done it.

I know the feeling! I have a huge family and we have always remembered birthdays and exchanged Christmas gifts. Now I start at Dollar tree with a small gift or two; then I’ll beef it up with snacks and goodies and add a little higher priced gift. Everyone loves goodies. Or I give 5.-10. Which everyone can appreciate. I know some folks can’t or don’t believe in giving cash but we have no problem with it. 😉

I laughed out loud when you were talking about going to high-pressure sales events to get a "Prize" We went to one, years ago and it was for a place you could camp or use one of their cottages anywhere in the US. The Salesman was VERY ambitious, to say the least!! When he wanted to show us one of the cabins, the one that was chosen had a big set of steps up to it. My Husband was in a wheelchair, so my Husband quietly told me, "WHEW!! At least we will get out of THIS one!!" NOPE!!! That Saleman ran up to my Husband, and scooped him up out of the wheelchair and almost ran up those steps into that cottage! He happily told us he was a football player at some college and was keeping VERY fit and active!!! HAHA!! At the end of that afternoon, we went to get out "prize", which was a set of luggage. OMG. It was a tiny set of these little cloth things that were being passed out to the customers as Luggage Sets!!! HAH!!! Did we ever learn a BIG lesson that day!! (If it sounds too good to be true---it IS!!!) ;) And for the record, we did NOT purchase anything that day! --Luckily!

😳 That salesman was very lucky your husband didn’t get him fired for picking him up and carrying him without permission. That was incredibly inappropriate and unprofessional. It was also battery and the salesman could have been arrested.

Instead of shopping for things I don't really need I go "shopping" in my house and what i mean by that is I thoroughly clean my house 6 times a year and I find forgotten goodies... Clothes and shoes that were shoved in back of the closet... Can goods and seasonings pushed to the back of the cabinet... Pens and pencils... Change and paper money... I take apart all closets cabinets and draws and organize and put back together... Piles of donate, sell and trash and yes i do this 6 times a year... I can't believe how much stuff accumulates just in a few months

Thank god im low maintenance..its just me and i really hate shopping…so i dont go unless like i have to go for some groceries…i cant remember the last time i bought any new clothes..i have plenty in my closet..im a hoody and jean person or tshirt and shorts…not interested in doing the shopping thing at all…especially with friends..im a home body and like being alone…so i go to work and go home..i really enjoy my home time alone….

Something you touch on briefly here is something that has been on my mind a lot in recent years: the concept of "enough". We have so much more these days than our parents had when we were growing up. It makes buying presents difficult because people with plenty of money often buy things they want whenever they want them and do not wait for Christmas or birthdays when other people might buy them for them. There is also such a poor understanding of what having enough means. In fact, people now may have no understanding that they have more than enough already. Enough means what it says - just that no more is needed. The difference between needs and wants is often poorly understood too, except within the frugal community. I am not exactly a minimalist, but I recognise that many of us have too much stuff and don't need or use some of it. There's a lot to think about here - thank you, Hope and Larry.

I have high end pots and pans of a similar brand. They were pricy but they are excellent pans and they are still in good shape after 40 years.

I check what is available in my local thrift stores. I wore a fuzzy gray sweater with pink jeweled buttons for the holidays. Looked nice with three years ago black velvet pants. I looked festive and dressy and appropriate for $8.

How you are treated matters. I was treated rudely at Costco when I was trying to purchase contacts. I went over to Sam’s Club and they answered my questions. I have now bought from them for multiple years. Same thing with my furnace the first company that I had come fix it was so rude I told them to leave. I paid the service charge, but ended up replacing my furnace with another company, so who really won in that situation. Not the company that treated me poorly.

we bought a Saladmaster set in 1974, and are still using several of the pieces. I’ve had a couple of handles replaced, and it took me forever to get the burn out of the bottom of a pan, but we continue to use them 48 years later.

Never shop when you’re fed up or bored. Lunch time shopping for office workers is a real money pit! Those magazines and ‘little bits’ to cheer yourself up really add up.

We let a kirby rep come to our home for a presentation. He vacuum our entire first floor, including drapery and furniture. They refused to let us pay cash. They left without a sale and we had a clean first floor.

Tupperware has been a part of my life since birth. My mother was a Tupperware Lady. I still have so much 'vintage' Tupperware from many years. I'm a Tupperware Lady now, and I personally joined just to afford the new stuff. Tupperware is a product that will last and last. It is best, in my opinion, to buy a "Tupperware" brand than a Rubbermaid brand because there is a lifetime warranty on most all Tupperware and not on Rubbermaid. I also purchase 'vintage' Tupperware from Mecari, eBay, and Facebook marketplace. It makes me feel better about plastic products because they aren't ending up in the ocean and landfills.

I shop alone at Goodwill. But only when I actually need something. Then I carry it around in the store. By the time I am done, I often find I don't really need it.

Sometimes I fill my cart and then I go back over each item and ask myself if this is something I really need or just want, then I start removing things from cart until it is empty LOL Because right now my mantra is MAKE DO!

I use my wishlist function. It enables me to not “forget” something I liked so I can go back and look again later. Often I’ll get a notice when there’s a price reduction on something on my list. By then the impulse to buy has been tempered.

The "Back Up" plan has been a stress saver for me NUMEROUS times!! Even for essentials like aluminum foil, coffee filters, cooking oil, you name it. It's great to just go get it in the house instead of ANOTHER trip to the store.

I always remember the saying walk away go back the next day…not quite the next day but when I’m at the supermarket if I’m pondering to buy or not I walk on. By the time I get to the end of my shop if I can’t remember what it is I was pondering I let it go.

Good, sound classic advice. I grew up with parents who lived by this philosophy and still do. Then I married a man who also lives by it. We have everything we need and are so happy, 23 years so far! We absolutely hate the whole keeping-up-with-the-Joneses thing.

I buy shoes in the $150 range. For me, it saves money. I realize this sounds crazy but it's true. Why? Pain in the calf and feet. The other reason is an unstable gate. Soles wear in places and in me, that leads to ankle twisting. Only thing I buy that I spend a lot of money on

Shoes are extremely important. Not designer shoes but shoes like you bought. Shoes that are comfortable, fit well, and are well made. I will scrimp in other areas because your feet are more important.

Pampered Chef! Talk about overpriced crap! There was an item that was $25 that I found at Walmart for $3 that I use every time I cook to break things up to brown evenly. I chuckle every time I use it!

Had a friend who also homeschooled her children. SHe was always selling pampered chef and some sort of candles (partylite). Glad that time of my life is over, she got mad at me when I quit attending and she was always calling me up for favors. I am busy with my elderly parents, and she has kicked me to the curb. I am no longer useful in her world. Wonder if I can get a refund?😁😂

I inherited a complete set of Revere wear from my mom who used it daily for as long as I can remember. Actually most of the things in my kitchen were my moms or my grandmothers. I have new gadgets too lol but I love the memory of my mom frying chicken in the skillet that I use now. Be Blessed ya'll ❤💙🙏

It’s a shame these days that a lot of people want to live like the Instagram houses or they see on other social media sites or neighbours/friends...I’ve always lived by my means, No credit, if I want something then I save for it ❤️ I’m a single mamma my main priorities are rent, keeping my children warm, clothed and fed, trying my best to save, and keeping my home clean and in order x I refuse to have expensive sofas, tv’s, clothing x If I need a new fridge for example then you’ve bet I’ve done my research and searched for half price sales etc I tell my children they might not have everything they WANT but they’ll always have everything they’ll NEED ❤️ Shop without a budget 😲 I just couldn’t 😂😂🇬🇧🏴❤️

What a find! They really are nice pans. Before those we had my mom's old aluminum pans. They leached metal into the food, but we didn't know the difference. We also had some Farberware pans. They all worked.

I try to have all of my Xmas shopping done by Halloween. By gathering gifts throughout the year it makes me very happy to NOT be buying last minute (paying full price, dealing with traffic and last minute shoppers, etc) but I do shop online for Black Friday deals if necessary.

I'm with you Larry. I buy backups when I do d a good deal. My mixer gave out during thanksgiving dinner. Luckily I had the backup. I even have a mailbox from a garage sale, as plows are famous here for taking them out. I think they have a contest for them.

I myself did a time share. I won a free trip to FL and i had a great time it was not so bad even when i had to sit thru hours of talks it was not so bad. I loved it had a great time learned a lot then after the talks was over i had 5 days of party time. Will never forget it. The whole trip even my meals and hotel and round trip everything was paid for. How very cool it was. Looking to do it again.

I bought a few big ticket items refurbished....a Dell laptop and a Dyson vacuum. I saved considerably over new. I am still using both and I'm very satisfied with the products.

Nearly 30 years ago we were in the market for a new stove. Having two young girls who were beginning to cook, I wanted a smooth top. The salesman really pressured me to buy a different one. We went to a Sears Outlet store and bought the stove we wanted, plus the fridge we had chosen, and both were delivered free. That first guy really missed out! BTW, that stove is still in service! I do lots of research and usually know what I want before I go into the stores. And I've walked out on many a pushy salesman, including one who promised me I wouldn't walk out of the store with less than $1000 on a laptop! We walked right out!

I think I'd have done the same. Having worked in retail, I can't imagine doing that to a customer. Way to make them run away fast and never come back. Far better to find out what they really need and want, whether that is expensive or not, and help them get that thing. Then you're way more likely to make a sale, and have a happy customer who will come back again, buy something else and keep the store you work at in business and yourself in a job.

High pressure sale: Kirby vacuum cleaner! I almost had the salesman out the door but my husband showed up. (Don’t worry, I knew the salesman or I would never have let him in.) We had it for years but boy! Repairs and parts were expensive! It was also very heavy.

With clothing, I buy what fits, what is comfortable to wear, what I love and I also tend to stick to timeless styles. I love to thrift shop and still apply my rules to thrift shopping. I waited 3 years to get a denim jacket because I wanted to make sure it was worth the money. Glad I waited I found the perfect one. I remember back when cell phones with cameras were a new thing. Here in Australia I had a couple of friends who paid over $1000 for a new phone with a camera, I waited a year and got the same phone for $80. My dad was a back up buyer. When he passed away we didn't have to buy a toaster for about 15 years. And towels were another thing we didn't have to buy new towels till recently.

My mom bought a rainbow vaccum from a salesman about 17 or 18 years ago. I'm 31 now and based on which house we lived in at the time I had to be around 11-13 then. It's still going strong. She still has the same vaccum and has never needed to have it repaired. A couple of years ago she saw they had a tent at a fall fair and bought an air purifier from them bc of how great the vaccum has been.

Hi Larry X hope I have been doing Ur things cleaning my cubards of food and cooking things in my freezer well IAM doing for 4weeksy husband has been getting me stuff likE milk cat food PAC of rice To make home made rice is delicious fruit and it may come to less than £20 were a used to be £40 so am saving so thank you the both of you I save money every month for Christmas so u r both amazing doing this very well

Exactly!! Money is too hard to come by to hand it to anyone or any business who is RUDE! I stress this to my adult children and grandchildren. (I am a flexible sales person by the way; no pressure on my clientele in 50 years.) “money is too hard to come by”

It only that. If they are rude to you when the transaction is their idea (selling,) ... how do you think they will be when the transaction is your idea (service and repairs)? Major red flag.

One alternative to buying is to make things yourself. I spent a bit of time pricing gardening stools/kneelers. I am NOT paying the price they are asking. But I have enough scrap pieces of wood, foam, and fabric around the house to make one myself.

I would agree on the underwear too :) Last night I spent so much time "window shopping" online. I put a couple items in my cart, then I walked away and decided not to impulse buy. I went into my closet and realized I had not 1, but 3 similar items to what I wanted to buy. Needless to say, it's all still sitting in my cart :)

I do this all the time. Anytime I’m “buying” something that we need, I will walk away from it for a day or a week or whatever & IF I’m still needing it or wanting it, ONLY THEN do I go back to the cart. Double check what I wanted… read comments, do more searching, & maybe a day or 2 later come back for it. This has saved me SOOOOO many times. I was looking at one item, had it in my cart, loved the look of it/practicality of it, & then went & looked at the comments about it. I’m so glad I did!!! That particular model was known to catch fire out of the blue. Add that it was going into my 7 year old’s room that was an even scarier thought!!! We found one that was HIGHLY recommended & bought it!!! Best thing!!! Basically, my son’s loft bed was towering over his high dresser, but he had a really tall lamp & he would try to lean over the lamp & SSSTTTREEEEETCHH!! To get the light turned on & off. It was even hard for me to reach & turn it on & off. So what did I do? Momma bought him a small tower plug in, with buttons to easily turn it off & on!!! Since he sleeps with his lamp on at night, this was our favorite idea to deal with the problem. So it now sits on his under the loft bed desk 😂

I am a Backup Person like Larry, mostly on Electronics stuff and DIY stuff like paint etc since I am a handy man, I have 2 backup used cell phones for the family, also cell phone charges, paint, brushes but I always buy the DIY items on sale. I try to "predict" what I will need, no backup refrigerator or bulky/expensive items since this will throw my budget off. Backup of simple stuff is a must for me because if your cell phone charger dies you have to go and buy another one at whatever price. I do not buy backups right away, I look for used or sale items when I find them.

Excellent, botialoach1. Yes, it just makes good sense to be prepared for these items that can so easily fail. It doesn't cost a lot if you do what you're doing - buying used. Way to go!

My parents did the time share free vacation back in the late sixties. I remember because I almost drowned in the pool😵. We were so broke, we ate hot dogs in the fancy kitchen. LOL! My parents had no intention of buying a time share AND they nearly lost a child! In my parent's defense, my sister was about 6 weeks old and was being bottle fed and my dad was watching my brother. I saw the slide and didn't realize that meant that was the deep end of the pool. I was 4 and didn't know how to swim😞

Before covid came around I was going to auctions and bought a lot for resale yet I'd buy a lot of items on the cheap and have used so much around the home. I'm happy sometimes I'd buy a half a table of items for 3 bucks oh the good old days

I do the back up plan also!!🥰 it’s great . I bought a counter microwave at garage sale for 10 dollars in case the over the stove built in went out (which it did) then I had time to shop around for a sale of a new over the stove model. Back in the closet goes the counter microwave😉 I’ve used this technique on many things around the house.

I had a salad master rep come knocking on my door. He made me a delicious salad right then and then I made an appt for the dinner party so I know exactly what you mean about feeling like your current post and pans are terrible. I really wanted the pots and pans but didn't have the cash and didn't want to make payments so I said no. I have also went on a free vacation where you go listen to the timeshare pitch. We did buy a timeshare lol. But we had 3 days to back out and we did back out. We thought it was such a good deal bc you could go to all these different resorts all over the world and you could go any week of the year. But they didn't tell you that you were assigned a week and had to pay a pretty hefty fee to change weeks and our week was the week of Christmas. We would NEVER go on vacation that week. We also added up the amount the timeshare was plus all the interest and suddenly the great price was now astronomical.

My daughter worked for a veterinary hospital, several years ago. The owner would buy expensive Nike athletic shoes. He would throw them away, after only a week or two. (Or more often, if he was exposed to an animal with parvo. Or if he got anything on his shoes). More than once she spot cleaned/sanitized the shoes. Then she would donate them to a thrift store. I can attest to how beautiful and new these shoes looked. It always felt good, knowing that the shoes were benefitting someone who couldn't otherwise afford them retail. Also, the best way to keep a pet healthy is to not buy the very cheapest food for them. "Bargain" pet food is full of oil and fillers that have very little nutritional value. Don't feed your pets people food/table scraps, in addition to their regular food. Quality hard food is better than soft. It helps keep tartar and bacteria from building up on your pets teeth. It also saves your pet from heart trouble caused by bacterial build up on their teeth (It's a form of blood poisoning for them). There are also teeth cleaning chews, that are well worth the money, as well. Brush your pets teeth. It saves you from paying a big vet bill to take them in to have the vet do a cleaning. The vet charges a lot of money to have your pet sedated to clean the tartar off their teeth. Sedation is very hard on animals. My daughter saw quite a few people's pets die under sedation because the animals will stop breathing, and the vet can't revive them. Pets add so much quality to our lives. A few steps of prevention adds years to our pets lives. And we owe it to them.

Thank you for all of this great information! Sometimes people don't realize all of the things that pets need, and the associated costs. If you are unable to keep up with the needs of your pet (financially, emotionally, physically) it is always better to recognize that before you get the pet. For myself I have come to the conclusion that I will always be a cat person. I'm on Disability and can no longer walk a dog. Another tip - if you can't afford a pet but have lots of love for them, try volunteering at the local animal shelter. That way you have all of the benefits of pet ownership without the costs!

@@almostthere2884 You have a big heart. I'm more of a dog person, but I've had my share of memorable cats, as a kid. My best kitty's name was blossom. She was the most beautiful cat. She let my sister and I dress her up as a baby, and she just revelled in all the attention. She would would just sit there with a baby bonnet on her head, purring the whole time.

Larry I am with you. I have backups to my backups. I could never be a someone who has the bare essentials. I am a prepper. I buy in bulk. On the printer sometimes it is more economical to buy a new printer with ink. Always check the price of the replacement ink. I disagree with you on the swimsuits. If you wait they are so picked over. This should be a one time purchase for several years. This comes back to fashion. Do I need to always look trendy. Not me. I figure if I am neat and clean that is enough. Keep up the good work guys. People need to pay attention and follow the teachings.

I believe in backups....ESPECIALLY for coffee.😁🤣 Another tip: When the coffee maker dies (for me the burner doesn't keep the coffee warm or the water doesn't heat up), if the coffee pot is still in good shape...I keep it as a backup. Seeing the price of just the coffee pot is as much as the whole coffee maker!😮 So I have a spare coffee pot.😁

BACK-UPS GREAT PLAN..2 is 1,1 is none..Multiples are a great idea..I have 2 generators,3 chainsaws etc..When you need to do and 1 doesn't work,start,perform then use the 2nd and fix the 1st when have time..My thought..

Buying under pressure was the worst habit for me, especially when the sellers were my friends. I no longer do that, praise the Lord! I still like brand names clothings that are classic and fit the budget but the experience of thrifted brand name clothes are equally fun! Something I still buy new are undergarments, bed sheets, toothbrushes, socks, shoes, towels... Basically anything that is highly personal. The most horrible Time Share experience I had was during our honeymoon. Not knowing how that worked, we were in for a big (bad) surprise. We are now planning and saving for our "second honeymoon" to celebrate our upcoming 30th anniversary. "If Larry and Hope can do it, we can certainly give it a try!" is our saying these days! 🙂 We have four children like you do - the oldest and youngest are 20 years apart and we want me to stay home for the same reason as yours, so your videos resonate much of our lives besides the frugal part. We were mostly living within our means but extreme frugality was not part of it then. Our older children are all functional adults now and contribute to society instead of taking from it, and for that, we are grateful and blessed.

My son, bless his heart. He is very giving. We were at a gas station on a trip. He was looking for change in the car to buy a pack of gum. Said he doesn't feel right using a restroom anywhere without buying something. I told him he shouldn't feel obligated to buy something everything he uses the restroom. But is this normal because I never would have thought about it. Like I said he is very good natured about giving.

My grandma taught me you never go into any place to use a restroom without buying something, even something small. I do this with gas stations mostly but with little kids sometimes it's easier to just get in & get out. If we try to grab something because we used the restroom I get something we can share

Throughout the video I was thinking of my recent KURBY purchase,🙈 and then you mentioned it!😃 I also knew about them and actually had been on the hunt for a good vacuum when they happened to come to my door, being that I am a frugal person it was a mixture of emotions even though I wanted it. They do directly and indirectly pressure the client, so being nice(which I'm also guilty of) can affect your wallet. I had the money but in my mind I had asked myself "how much would pay for it?" so I thought... "if they get as low as $900 I will get it", after walking away for a minute and researching it because I thought $2100 that they offered it for was way too much. They did end up going as low as $900.🤷🏻♀️😊

That was actually one of the vacuums that were an option before also, but we did end up getting the Kurby because we can wash our carpet, couches and car seats as well as the carpet on the car... with all the attachments they were asking over $2100, but they ended up including them with the price I paid for to make the sale.😊

Love what you own! So often you already have all that you need and it’s wonderful. If you know you need something and it must meet certain requirements, keep that list of requirements with you, take a picture of the list so they’ll be with you on your phone, that way if something pops up, you’ll know whether it meets your specs and if it’s time to buy.

One thing I do is I develop an "ongoing" or "running" wish list. That way I know what I'm looking for and I can research it in advance before buying. I also stick to my list. Anything not on the list, I try not to buy.

Ebay 🤭 I actually fix a cash envelope each year in January for the shops I love to look around in make a list of my "wants" then I also know the amount of money I have because I stuffed the envelope $2.00 per pay check which is twice a month (fixed income Retirement) then in August of each year I know that's my month to buy my "wants" if I so choose to, or I will roll it over . The cash envelopes has honestly saved us a ton. lol I am a Jones 🤣 no we dont worry about what others have because we know we are almost Debt Free we are paying down our Mortgage come 2022 March can't wait 💟 The extra money we save on grocerys goes to our Principal Only. I love you all just a great inspiration for others 😍

At fast fashion stores, there would be seasonal lines, now it is more like a new clothing line every week, so 52 "seasons" instead of four. For Christmas I put $20 away every payday, I can't believe how expensive Christmas was before I started to save for it.

I read about the concept of "52 seasons" in retail. I can't remember where I first came across that concept, but, it's really how a lot retail establishments are viewing their sales cycle. We save all year long for Christmas, too. It helps that right now we only buy for our four sons and my mother.

LOL ... I surf for edible perennials, add the ones I want to the shopping cart/wish list of the sites, then close the tabs after adding the plants I've found to my list to prioritize. I developed a habit back in college of loading my shopping cart with everything I wanted/needed, then going back through the store to unload the things that didn't fit my budget, only keeping the essentials. Most of the time, that same habit works for me online as well.

We take the "free vacations" all of the time. You are right, it is not pretty but as long as you hold strong and let them know right away you are not buying! This really cuts the amount you spend for a beautiful vacation. Branson, Aruba and so on...

We do own some saladmaster pans and we love them. We did get sucked in to a time share buying. We then had great buyers remorse. We found that what we had wanted the time share for was not available where we needed them for our training classes. Then we actually had to pay more $$$ to get our of our contract, a really expensive lesson . But we now always sleep on a purchase no matter the situation

This was great! Loved every tip and reminder. Watching your show helps keep me frugal! Another tip: when needing home repairs, check at church or work . Perhaps someone can do the job much cheaper and would appreciate the money too. Win/win! My son’s friend has saved me so much by working on my old home for less, and since he lost his job due to the pandemic, is grateful for the jobs.

About 10-15 years ago, I bought Kitchen Kraft cookware which is just as expensive as Saladmaster, probably. I had tried many brands of cookware and wasn't satisfied with any of them. I knew what I was getting into cost-wise, but I saved for it. I LOVE and USE my cookware. The food turns out great, the pots and pans are easy to clean, durable, and will last decades. I don't regret the purchase. I also have a couple of Le Creuset pieces that are also a joy to cook with. If my cookware ends up in an estate sale after I die, that find will make someone happy. Probably an eBay reseller. :)

My husband got a couple kitchen knives after my in-laws passed away. Good stuff. Also, 100% guilty of impulse buying. Love your video on goal setting for purchases. Plan on writing down what I want and prioritizing and getting on that index card!

I also tell myself, "Do you want that, or do you want to re-enact?" There is not even a hesitation; I want to re-enact. Now when I can get re-enacting clothing and equipment at the thrift store-well, all bets are off!! I have found medieval pants there, and I have shopped for medieval boots there (haven't found them yet, but hope springs eternal)
