Purchasing meat that is on sale or clearance has always saved me alot of money over the years. I have had problems with depression the last few months and have not wanted to cook resulting in a large amount of fresh food to be wasted. Now, I am feeling better, I cook one protein for several days worth of meals and rely on frozen or canned veggies with only a few fresh fruits or veggies. Saves more money and less waste.

I do as well. I tend to batch cook and freeze most of it on my good days. I just did that on Sunday. I have it in the freezer pre- portioned. It makes those rough days (sometimes weeks) a bit easier. Hope you are doing ok.

A couple of ideas: 1 - Bulk is my most significant budget saver. Find a store that sells things in bulk ie. dry beans, spices, flour etc. You will see a massive benefit to the budget. 2 - Buy the big block of cheese when it's on sale and grate it all. I use a food processor. Lay the cheese out on cookie sheets to freeze and then put it in gallon-size freezer bags. No moldy cheese and you have the convenience without the price.

Try “Better than Bullion “ instead of the cubes. Especially the chicken! It’s so good, you can even drink it warm for a yummy warm drink. Just need to dilute it properly.

I cook a large pot of brown lentils, let them cool off. Put 1 1/2 cups in each small baggy and keep them on the freezer door. When making something with ground beef or ground turkey add them to the recipe it stretches the meat. No one will notice, lentils are my favorite due to them being cheaper than other beans available. Thanks for the video

It’s funny you say you swap salsa for rotel, I swap rotel with my homemade salsa. Great videos Maria, I am on a personal challenge and have not purchased groceries since the end of February, I am still so well stocked I am going to continue for maybe another month. I had done a low spend January and kind of started this no spend by accident. We had to go away the end of the first week of March, so we used up and froze what we could, so as not to waste. Well I got home a week later, didn’t stop at the grocery store and looked around and realized I really didn’t NEED anything, and so it began. Now I am on a personal challenge.

For the taco meat, I also add Spanish rice to the mix. It makes so many burritos or tacos for little money. I recently saw this on Dollar Tree Meals here on YT--Take one store made salad and make wraps with it. It has protein, cheese, lettuce, etc instead of buying everything separate. Very smart trick when traveling/hotel rooms. Good video!

Frozen vegetables tend to be frozen very soon after they are picked so, ironically, they are often 'fresher' than the fresh vegetables. I keep some in my freezer but also buy fresh ones. But brussel sprouts have now increased in price from too high to insanely expensive and the frozen ones are normal so I have decided to stick to frozen until.- if - the prices normalise. Thank you for the video!

Don’t laugh - but we buy our popcorn in a bag or big bottle and we use something called a Whirly Pop that is used on the stove top. Yep - I was skeptical too, but it takes about the same amount of time to pop as putting in a microwave, and in my opinion takes better and has way less unpopped kernels. Use butter, salt or whatever seasoning you choose. Bonus - it makes way more than a bag of microwave popcorn. Just a little more labor intensive (but not much) but it works. On buying whole heads of lettuce - I recently learned from another KZfaq channel that as soon as you get the head of lettuce home, take it out of that flimsy plastic bag from the grocery store and wrap it securely in aluminum foil and place in the crisper section of your refrigerator. It can last if you rewrap each time you use it for a very long time - I’ve had Romaine last up to two weeks - unheard of - it works!

You can save on the snack zip lock bags by buying the fold over sandwich baggies. Portion them out and keep the main bag sealed. Mom would grab those baggies when we emptied them and refill them. They are $1.88 for 200 of them. You can also use the glad bowls to divide them up. If you are in the west or in the Carolinas and Virginia there are the US Chef's stores. This week they have boneless, skinless chicken breasts 40 lbs for $58. Pork loin for $1.79 lb and beef rib for $9.49 lb. Which is kinda pricey. I just buy from there and split it all up. Seems like a lot of money, but it will last us for months. Tip if you are in a humid area you can put pretzels and crackers into a dehydrator to get the crispy texture back.

3:05 Instead of baggies, save and reuse the containers from packages of Hillshire Farms deli meats. That way you're not wasting money on disposable bags and the plastic containers can keep chips, candy, or whatever else from being easily squished. 10:50 Got me thinking of modifying one of my go-to canned chicken recipes with a can of mixed vegetables that might stretch it from 4 meals into 6 meals, but I don't know how well it keeps as a second-day or third-day leftovers. Original recipe breaks down to about $1.80/large meal, or projected $1.40/moderate meal with the added vegetables. The canned chicken is the most expensive part and fresh cooked and shredded chicken could bring costs down even lower. ORIGINAL 1 Can (12.5oz) of Swanson White Premium Chunk Chicken Breast 1 Large (22.5oz) can or 2 small (10.5oz) cans of Campbell's Cream of Chicken Soup 1 Box (16oz) of Rotini (Spiral-shaped) pasta or small/medium shell pasta ~12oz water Makes 4 large, 6 moderate, or 4 small/kid meals Step 1 - Cook pasta as directed in a large pot, drain and set aside in a large bowl while returning pot to the stove and lower heat to low-medium setting. Step 2 - Rinse and drain canned chicken. Place in the large pot and use large spoon/ladle to smash the chuck into flat "shredded" chicken. Add the cream of chicken soup and about 12oz of water. This is about half the normal amount called for in the normal 1:1 cooking instructions so that the "sauce" isn't too runny and kind of sticks to the pasta. Stir the soup mixture (about 15 minutes) until the condensed soup is fully melted/dissolved and the "shredded" chicken chunks are spread throughout. Step 3 - Add back the cooked pasta and stir until thoroughly coated. Cook for another 10-15 minutes, stirring every 3-5 minutes to keep things from sticking and burning on the bottom. Remove from heat and let sit for about 10 minutes, stir once halfway through and again before serving. This is actually better as leftovers in my opinion, because the soup "sauce" kind of thickens, gets less runny and sticks to the pasta to give it better flavor, hit it with some salt and pepper and it's good to go. I know that this version will keep for 2-3 days as leftovers. I typically reheat 4 minutes on 50% power (1100w microwave) stir and heat again for another 4 minutes at 50% power. NEW VEGETABLE VERSION In Step 2 if you dump in the can straight (with it's own water), maybe cut back the additional water to about 8-10oz instead of ~12oz in the original. I don't know how well the leftovers would keep or reheat since I've only now considered it. NOTE ON DIFFERENT SOUPS I usually go with just the Campbell's Cream of Chicken, but have been tempted to try 1 small can 🐓Cream of Chicken and 1 small can 🥦Broccoli & 🧀Cheese or just both small cans of 🥦🥦Broccoli & 🧀🧀Cheese.

It depends, per once the larger container may be less, but if you notice that you're never able to finish it before it goes bad it's better to just buy the single serving container. Also if you want to buy just one or two chicken breasts maybe check your local carnicería or latin foods market. Often times they will sell you any amount of meat you like.

I already do most of what you named, it is way less expensive. I just wanted to comment on your chip/ popcorn statement. You are totally right, popcorn is way more fun than chips, also if you don't want plain buttered popcorn there are so many ways to spruce it up, it's a winner everytime. If we are about to watch a movie and I say popcorn it always is a thumbs up.

Great ideas. I have been doing a lot of pantry cooking the past few weeks, trying not to buy much on my limited income. Due to mobility issues I don't really go to the grocery store but do pick up instead, so I miss out on some of that discounted meat. However, I do buy meat and break it up to freeze it portion sizes for me.. I also use about half the meat in the recipe and sometimes bulk it up with veggies. I love spaghetti with just about half a pound of ground beef or sausage and tons of veggies, zuchinni, bell pepper, onions, carrots, mushrooms and anything else that sounds good that day. My friend started making it this way and won''t go back. I have even just made it with veggies and sauce. Yum! BTW, it's Best Foods mayonnaise and it is the same as Hellman's just a different name in the West. I didn't learn this until I was in my 20's, I'm 67 now.

@@MealsWithMaria my food budget is about $130 give or take maybe $50.00 per month for one person. I buy a lot of meat that is on sale. I buy the 2.25 lb of hamburger and split it up into 1/2 lb in freezer bags. I buy chicken breasts in family pack and cut them up into thin breasts and tender portions. I will get a 3 or 4 pound chuck roast and cut up some for stew meat or stir fry, then use the whole portion that is left for pot roast. These are some of the things I do too stay on budget.

Beans? Not everyone wants to eat beans all day every day

My husband is sir fart a lot with beans. I know what you mean. Use lentils, I sneak them into all of my ground beef and ground turkey recipes. I cook a large pot of brown lentils let them cool off then separate them into 1 1/2 cups per small baggies. I now use 1/2 pound of meat and 1 1/2 cup of bag of lentils. You can't tell they are in their. You don't have to have beans every day. Once a month make a big crockpot full of beans then portion them out throughout the next couple of months. Or, sneak them into meatloaf, use them as a side dish. Prices are supposed to go up 3 percent in the next couple of months. People will be farting. (to cut down on gas, soak your beans overnight)
