Nice that you touched on the ethics of wild-caught fish. I appreciate that.

Wikipedia suggests that if I am going to buy fish anyways, wild caught fish may be a good idea after all. it will employ people to fish, otherwise they will work to deforest the continent instead! furthermore, isn't it worse when they are factory farmed in captivity? if they are ethically caught and sustainably caught in the wild, and feed the fishers and their familes, and save the rainforest... and if you were going to buy fish anyways maybe wild is the way to go? I am seriously considering to only get wild caught fish from now on

I really love female bettas too. I had a sorority tank a while back but it didn’t work out because I didn’t quarantine properly. A nasty parasite wiped all my bettas out in a day. It was devastating. So I figured I could share the knowledge I learned from that mistake for anyone else interested in keeping a sorority.

I like that you distinguished between the 20 gallon long and high. Load-wise, Aquarium Advisor focuses on the surface area of the tank. In that sense, a 20 gallon long is equivalent to a 29 gallon. I like your suggestions, and would only add that live bearers can be readily combined with some of the other community fish. Also, your suggested loads are on the light side (based on Aquarium Advisor recommendations), which is better for beginners.
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 3 жыл бұрын
I tend to prefer recommending lighter aquarium stocking because it’s easier to maintain. Less cleanings, less water changes... and with less fish the water parameters stay pretty consistent for longer. Also, personally, I just think it’s more humane to not shove a ton of fish into a small space. Although official sources might say the aquarium can handle x number of fish, I just feel more comfortable suggesting a lighter stock. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Great 20 gal ideas, thanks for touching on so many different options. I will have to disagree with you on the goldfish, however, because they will simply grow too large to be kept in a 20 gallon their entire life (which could potentially be 10+ years). I would agree with you if you added the caveat of certain types of goldfish, like the Pearlscale, which can comfortably live in a 20 gal due to their smaller size. However, most types of goldfish will probably grow to be anywhere from 6-12+ inches depending on the type (say, Ryukin vs Comet or Shubunkin), so this is why I advise against suggesting goldfish unless one takes into account the particular type and planning for their full adult size.
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
That’s valuable advice that I hadn’t considered when I made this video. I was thinking of fancy goldfish, like pearlscales, like you said. But I probably should have been more specific. Thank you for commenting this.

Another suggestion for a 20 gallon long would be a crayfish they can come in a wide variety of colors to such as brown, blue, white, red, ect but you should only keep one of them per 20 gallons. I also suggest you keep them with fast moving fish without short fins such as small species of tetras, minnows, cherry barbs, ect. Mine personally is weird he is a electric blue crayfish and he is scared of everything I have him with a couple of swordtails and as soon as he senses them he swims away, I've even put my fingers in his claws and he does not pinch them. Ive kept crayfish in the past but none of them were anything like him so maybe he's just special.

*I just got a 15 gallon long tank* Was thinking of stocking it as follows; - 1x Honey gourami (male) - 10x Neon tetra - 4x Amano shrimp - 10x Red cherry shrimp - 3x small snails Is this okay? I know it sounds like a lot, but you gotta keep in mind that the snails and shrimp are really really light on the bioload. *As for filtration* , I'm using a Seachem tidal 35, which is used for up to 35 gallons. So my thinking is that the overfiltration this filter provides would help to keep the fish happy.

The do alright in hard water too. They’re very tolerant and can live an anything between hard water and salt water, but for prolonged periods of time they do best in brackish water. If you put mollies in softer water, they will live for maybe a few weeks or months if you’re lucky, then die.

For the sorority tank do you know how to tell a temperament at the store or is it something you can just tell by looking at them
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
Jackson Esposito it’s hard to tell at the store. You can put the cups next to each other and shuffle them around a bit and eliminate anyone who is flaring or seems aggressive. But when you get them home, and put them in their quarantine tanks, you’ll be able to do further testing by putting the tanks next to each other. You’ll also get a better idea if their temperaments while they’re in quarantine. If you’re buying fish specifically for a sorority tank it’s entirely likely some of them won’t work out in the sorority tank and will have to be kept separate or returned.

@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
For your bottom dweller, I'd suggest you pick either kuhli loaches *or* corydoras, rather than both. Both of these species do better in larger groups, so it would be better for the fish if you just get a larger group of one kind instead of smaller groups of both.

@@JeremyGoneWildPets thank you! I have been considering that! The only problem is I want to add gravel to my tank (it's bare bottom right now) but I heard sand is best for corydoras. And I am a little afraid of sand because it can develop toxic air pockets and it is honestly a pain in neck to have (I have had it before). Do corydoras need sand and if so, how high is the risk of sand causing a problem?
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
Corydoras definitely do best on sand. But sand isn’t really that scary. You only need to worry about buildup of toxic gasses is the sand is really deep. But if the sand is only like an inch deep or so, then it’s not deep enough for that to happen. Also, the corydoras help stir the sand for you, so it’s even less risky with them in the tank. If you decide to use gravel, just make sure the gravel is smooth and doesn’t have any rough or sharp edges that could cut or irritate their bellies.

If it's a 20 gallon long, I suggest you go with the Aquaneat LED light that you can get on Amazon. But if it's a 20 gallon tall/standard, the light on the Aquaneat may not be bright enough, and you may have to spend more money on something a little stronger, such as the Aqueon AquaBright.

@@JeremyGoneWildPets mines the 20gallon tall, currently i DIY'ed the basic ceiling led t-5 (3 x 10watts), it does the job but the tank can look better i guess 😅, that's why I'm looking around,was considering even a single flourescent t5 because of its ability for the fixture to be repaired and the cheap cost of the bulbs, what are your thoughts on it? Thank you
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
It will definitely do the trick. I personally prefer LED lights because you don’t have to replace the bulbs, but upfront they are more expensive so I can understand why you would want to go with a diy solution. @JeremyGoneWildPets

Sure, you could put 2 smaller schools of maybe 6 small fish each, but it's much better for schooling fish to be in larger groups of the same species rather than smaller groups of more species. So it's more beneficial for the fish if you only have 1 type of schooling fish but in larger numbers.

@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
Generally no. Smaller fish will be eaten by the axolotl. Larger fish will irritate the axolotl. Axolotls external gills can resemble bloodworms and fish like to nip at those gills. Would 6 neon tetras 4 kool loaches and 2 honey gourami work. And would some shrimp fit
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
Wambo Gaming 6 neon tetras is a good start. I would suggest 6 kuhli loaches instead of 4, because they do better in bigger groups, and only one honey gourami instead of 2 because gourami do best with only one gourami in the tank. As for the shrimp, what kind of shrimp? My concern is that the gourami might eat the shrimp if they’re a small species.

@@JeremyGoneWildPets I was thinking bamboo shrimp ro help cycle the tank and there to bug to not get eaten.
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
Bamboo shrimp are a good size. But be careful... shrimp are very sensitive to water parameters, and they do best in mature tanks that have been running for several months, so using them to cycle the tank probably isn’t a wise choice. I personally don’t use any livestock to cycle my tanks, I do a fishless cycle using fish food as my ammonia source.

I have a 10 gallon tank. I have decided to upgrade to a 20 gallon. I don't really care for center peace fish. I currently have a group of 3 panda corydoras (used to be 4) and one otocinclus catfish (used to be a group of 3) and a nerite snail. I eventually want shrimp, chili Rasboras and/or kuhli loaches and obviously I need to get at least two more otocinclus but I don't really know how much is too much. Like could I fit all I want in a 20 gallon? It feels like a lot but I don't know I don't have anyone in my life that is in this hobby so I don't really have anyone to ask for advice.

@JeremyGoneWildPets 4 жыл бұрын
Sharon Kaczorowski you’re definitely entitled to that opinion. I’ve seen a lot of betta sororities fail, so I understand why you would think that. But also I’ve seen a lot of successful betta sororities. It all comes down to the expertise level of the fish keeper, and their willingness to not cut corners. Like I said in the video, it’s only for advanced fish keepers. A lot of betta breeders keep their females together, though, for example. It’s a lot more common than you would think. But if you don’t feel comfortable with it, definitely don’t do it. If my description of it in the video made you feel like it’s not for you, then it’s probably not for you.

Agreed on most of this information until you said that an angelfish or even a pair of them were a good idea for a 20 gallon standard tank. That is an absolute terrible suggestion I can not stress enough that 20 gallons of water is not enough for even a single angelfish unless obviously it is used as a “grow-out tank” and that is it. Please stick to other suggestions if you want a Cichlid. Apistogrammas or rams would love a 20g long or standard. And even a fish like a keyhole Cichlid could live in a 20 standard long term. but not an angelfish.
@JeremyGoneWildPets
@JeremyGoneWildPets 5 жыл бұрын
Tomahawk Oddballs Thank you for your feedback. I’ve not kept angelfish myself but I see influential fish keeping youtubers keep them in 20 gallon and 29 gallon tanks all the time, and it was suggested to me when I made this list which is why they made it into the video. I understand if you feel that is too small, and I agree that bigger is better. According to the angelfish keepers I have spoken with, a 20 gallon tall tank would be the bare minimum. I generally do advocate going above the bare minimum. And I am always learning, so if there are additional resources that you can direct me to that indicate a different bare minimum, I would be interested in seeing it. Thanks.
@wolfmania10
@wolfmania10 5 жыл бұрын
Jeremy's Wild Studio a single angelfish in a 29g with some schooling fish maybe but two I’d say at least a 40.. especially if they aren’t a breeding pair or they are two of same gender... angelfish are a shoaling fish. If you do not plan to keep a proper shoal then you’re supposed to either have just 1 or a mated pair. If you have a mated pair then 40g+ tank is perfectly fine... a 20g could be used as a grow out tank for a little while but definitely not longterm.. even though not long they are very tall... (and also a lot meaner than name suggests lol)... and they will appreciate the extra height of larger tanks

@@cass4715 How you know they loved it? You don't think they would want more space? Goldfish get big, including fancy goldfish. A 20 long or 30 wouldn't allow the goldfish to grow to their full potential. Goldfish swim around a lot, exploring. 20 is too small. Value your pets, not your wallet.

@@dajoke24 Did I not literally say adolescent? I'm well aware how big Goldfish can get, my life revolves around my animals, do you really think I'd put my fish in an environment that wasn't healthy for them? So yeah my Goldfish are quite happy, thank you.

@@bgaquatics242 A lot of people think they are genuinely doing everything right but that isn't always the case. Sorry if I came across as a dick. But any goldfish variant doesn't belong in a tiny tank like a 20 long. I also don't agree with "rescuing" fish from chain stores. You just bought that fish from them. So they are gonna restock and the cycle continues. Can a goldfish live and survive in a 20? yes of course. But are they thriving? I don't think they are. You can get used big tanks for cheap. just be patient. I aim to provide the best care for my animals. Not the minimum. And a 20 gallon isn't even minimum. It is so small and will stunt their growth. But unfortunately most people won't listen and they always think they are in the right.
