I was just coming in here to say that! They are absolute miracle workers! Did you see the other day how one of the youngest ones was probably only a couple of days away from being decapitated? These rescues make me cry and make my heart soar. Naude and his friends continue to rescue all these pinnipeds, knowing that the job will never be finished and the seals will always need OCN there until rapture unless people suddenly grow a soul in their black hearts. I know everyone has to make a living, but to make a living with no concern for those around them is, to me, some of the worst blights on us as a species.

I can't figure out why they call a flock of starlings a murmuration. If you've ever had a group of them in your garden you will know they don't murmur, they squabble constantly and loudly. They fly in like a squadron of fighter jets, make lots of noise and mess, peck the fatballs so most of it goes on the floor then go do a raid on another garden. We love it. They are just natural comedians. Those seal rescuers are absolute legends. These are the people that restore your faith in humanity.

About #2, the seal rescues in Namibia, there's actually an organization (OCN or Ocean Conservation of Namibia) that does this every day-- and has its own KZfaq channel. But, no. It may be that 2% of fishing nets are discarded in the oceans worldwide, but about 67% of all pinnipeds (seals and seal-like creatures) are entangled by fishing lines, fishing nets and other debris (mostly plastics) and it's an ongoing mission to save them.

What's makes the video of the starlings flying amazing is the number of birds in that flock. I happen to live along a migration route of the local starlings in eastern America and I can judge the seasons by their return. When you see the starlings, spring is here. I've never been able to witness their activity from a distance but I always know when they arrive because they stop at every bird feeder in my area-- and when they stop at mine, I know it. Hundreds of noisy birds suddenly descend and are everywhere. Because starlings are very like their larger cousins, crows and ravens, I genuinely think Alfred Hitchcock got his idea for the movie, "Birds," by witnessing this annual invasion. They don't stay long, though. Just a few minutes and they're gone.

When I lived in the sticks in Michigan we used to get these huge flocks of Starlings like this. It is a sight you’ll never forget. They used to fly over our land (my parents had 40 acres) like this when I was a kid. Now I don’t see the huge flock like this and don’t see that many Starlings anymore.

@@wadehm63 About 30 years ago just before dark I had to pull over when I saw a thick cloud of Starlings. They weren't just dancing, they were migrating in late fall and the cloud stretched as far as I could see in two directions. Had to be tens of millions of birds. After twenty minutes I got back on the road and never saw the end of the flock / swarm. This was along I75 near central Michigan.

The Tierra del Fuego clip was understated. I learned to fly in Oregon, near the Cascade Mountain Range - a string of dormant volcanos that run North & South. When there are heavy winds from the west they go shooting up the west sides of the mountains & come roiling down the east side, creating circular eddies akin to wing-tip vortices, only miles wide, thousands of feet deep that do not disapate until winds from the west let up. The Air Force Base on the east side of the mountains closes to all westerly flights during those conditions. Would need to be considerably higher to get out of the effects, but it looks like they were in or approaching landing pattern.

Airplanes don’t “freefall” unless they’re in pieces, they glide.
@TampaDave
@TampaDave 5 ай бұрын
Or in a steep dive, or hit a sudden downdraft. You know it is freefall when you experience it. My friend, a duster pilot, likes to practice having an object like a pen hover above his hand as long as possible in a dive (it is quite difficult). This technique was also used to expose astronaut-trainees to short periods of zero gravity in the days before Alan Shepard became the first American to experience weightlessness it in space. In the case you are referring to, I agree that it was an incorrect use of the word. Freefall in that case would be disastrous; what the pilot aims for is "best glide rate". 😊The Cessna 172 has a 12/1 glide ratio at that airspeed.

Yeah, it is quite a feeling when the plane suddenly pitches and the floor falls out from under you. But it is courtesy not to scream like you are dying, at least until you actually ARE dying. I love for people to scream on a roller coaster, especially when I am holding my arms up.

I am a Dane too, and indeed, that word is used for those rather common massive flocks, which even attract tourists to some districts here. I have heard about bus excursions going chasing black suns in for instance the southern part of Jutland every autumn. That said, black sun is unfortunately also an occult symbol, even used by some very extreme fringe group of the Nazi party in Germany, and it of course took some to be extreme in that age and group, and also neo-nazis even to this day. Which is, why I never mention this translated word to foreigners. Apparently a fringe group of the infamous SS, which were deeply fascinated with occultism. There is plenty of people in the world, who believes, that Denmark were a Nazi cooperating nation during WW1 already, and the fact is, during the occupation, for the first 2½ years, the Danish government and all state institutions, as for instance the police, did cooperate and act on behalf of the German occupation authorities.

My hat's off to the firemen and the people saving the seal pups. God bless them! Seeing that boat in Thailand rigged up with a car motor made me gag. Not only can the blokes kill themselves (and others), but the black, acrid smoke coming out of the engines is just another nail in the coffin for our air. So is all the smoke of the wildfires, but we don't have to add to the problem. Loved seeing those starlings! What a spectacular show! Perhaps they act that way before certain weather or other natural events? (I.e., earthquakes, etc.) Animals' senses are attuned to natural phenomena so much more than ours. I once flew over the Andes in a plane, the wild turbulence made everyone pray for a safe landing. On another occasion, I saw one arriving after such a flight, and everyone, from the crew to the passengers, looked green in the face! Yet another amazing collection of clips, thank you!

I get the feeling the birds are trying to tell us something, but we're too stupid to understand.

Not being glib but the BC fires looked like a scene out of Ghostbusters 😅 Sadly it was air of fire and not green slime.

Reid Hillview airport in San Jose CA is bordered on 2 sides by major roadwars: Tullybrd, a 6 lane avenue , is just to the south, and the other side of Tully is Eastridge Mall, which when it was built in the late 60s was the largest mall west of the Mississippi. Bordering both mall and airport on the east is Capitol Expressway. Locals have lost count of the number of smaller aircraft that have landed on the expressway, but two of tjemore memorable events were of planes that came in too low on the approach. One landed on the roof of one of the 3 anchor dept stores in the mall, Macy's; the other slsmmed nose first into a Farrell's ice cream parlor in a detachrd building at the north edge of the mall parking lot.

I've been on a flight with terrifying turbulence - and it got so scary, the cabin actually became eerily silent because I think everyone was just praying we would land safely - we hit the runway like a brick and I think, burst a tyre, but we did eventually land safely - sadly, I was a bit wobbly getting off as I couldn't walk properly because of the turds lodged in my socks (*_*)
