Venus v Serena will forever be the most intense and breathtaking rivalry of any sport. The odds of two relatives getting to the top of their game at the exact same time is amazing

Yes but The matches were not that intense because they both wanted each other to win, serenas killer instinct was not present in all Those matches

Agreed it was so so good. Wouldve liked the H2H to be a bit closer but serena dominated almost everyone so I can't complain. The intensity was amazing and they have so much respect for each other

Azarenka had 3 great years, 2011-13. In her 17-year-long career she was among the top 10 at year’s end only in 2009-13. No wonder Serena dominated her.

Different players have different advantages. Venus uses a lot of hard flat shots and players like Capriati & Azarenka seem to struggle the most with these types of players. Azarenka doesn't have the best foot steps and she doesn't have that natural quick first steps that other top players have. Azarenka can run for miles and she never gives up chasing the ball but she wasn't quick. Against a player like Venus with flat shots where the ball doesn't bounce high, that would be a disaster for Azarenka. As far as Henin goes, 8 out of 9 of their meetings was when Henin hadn't reached her peak yet. Peak Henin was in mid 2003 and all 7 of Venus wins were pre peak Henin.

Not really. Venus won all of her matches against Henin while Justine was a teenager and not yet in her prime. They actually only played once since Justine hit her prime in 2003 and Justine won comfortably at the 2007 US Open. Henin is a better player than Venus despite the misleading h2h.

@Akiza Izinski pahahahaha ridiculous statement. Utterly ridiculous. You clearly didn't watch the Venus vs Henin UsO 07 match. It was one of the if not THE greatest straight sets match ever in the modern WTA. And this was in a year that with the exception of Wimbledon and maybe Zurich, wasn't even a banner year for Venus in terms of form.

Seeing videos like this I am always constantly amazed it literally took her "aging" out, getting pregnant, having a pulmonary embolism and a collapse lung to make anyone virtually competitive against her. I know people like to debate her goat status with her not making it to 24 but I will forever give serena her flowers!!! She will forever by my favorite "legendary" tennis player. But the US open in 04 still bothers me and also the foot fault incident as well it sad that those "rivalries" ended so sourly.

Solid top 5, but I would’ve re-ordered. I think the most interesting rivalries are those that can go either way on the biggest stage, and where the competing styles and personalities create intrigue. My top 5 would be: 1. vs Henin 2. vs Hingis 3. vs Venus 4. vs Capriati 5. vs Azarenka

I think you should add Li Na in the video instead of Schiavone and Muguruza. Because she was actually one of the most dangerous players challenging Serena in the past.

Capriati won four matches vs. Serena at GS. RG and Wimb. 2001 + RG and US Open 2004.

Stosur should be on this list. 8-3 head to head. 3 times in slams Stosur leads 2-1. 2 finals 1-1 last meeting Cincinnati 2014 7-6 7-6 Serena favour.

I’ve always thought Azarenka and Kerber had the right skills and grit to beat Serena anytime they play but Serena always knows how to turn it up a notch to get through

Of going by how many games played against. Then Sharapova should be in top ten. But if going by recorded win/loss then she shouldn't even be on this list.

No one asked them to retire. They did because they were losing to the so called weak era players you claimed Serena faced. They would have continued playing if they felt they could win more. They are both younger than Serena

@@deusexmachina9776 You have a point, but Clijsters came back in 2009 and won a lot. After 2011 Australia open she couldn't win much. She lost to Azarenka at Australia, was trashed by Kerber at Wimbledon and lost to Laura Robson at the us open. She probably realised her time was up. If she was dominating the slams in 2012, I doubt she would have retired. After 2007, Henin couldn't do much, because she was burnt out. These 2 couldn't win slams against the weak era players, so what shows they would have prevented Serena from winning more? And if they choose family life over tennis, that's not Serena's doing, so this constant narrative that their retirement gave Serena an easy pass is tiring. On another note. Kim Clijsters only beat Serena once in a slam. I guess we have to agree to disagree
