Andrew you've done it again, great video, love your work 👏 Slurping Noodles 🍜: wouldn't be much of a noodle shop if no-one was heard slurping their noodles 😮😅 ... but can i go even deeper on that: slurping noodles certainly creates a fantastic atmosphere for diners and staff 🤗 (even though the uninitiated may differ on that 🤭) There's actually science on the reason for slurping. Firstly, the slurp gets the most broth possible clinging to the noodles from bowl to mouth. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, air is drawn into the mouth and consequently your upper nasal area, greatly increasing the taste sensors and therefore enjoying the broth flavours even more. It's true ! There's a great NHK JAPANGLE ramen episode on it, it's really worth searching out 😊

I got slapped with Taiyaki all the time so I loved getting slapped with it... But seriously when I was at HImeji and several other locations I couldn't believe how loud some tourist were. One was even face timing it and we all know how loud people ware when doing that stuff.

Funny how many rules in Japan are actually rules here as well, except people constantly break them here. Won't be doing the slurping noodles thing though.

Thank you! There's always next time for cherry blossoms. Actually, until early June is a great time to visit. It's not that warm still, and you can just about avoid the beginning of rainy season. Check more details here: weatherspark.com

Hi Andrew, we just came back from a 2-week trip in Japan. We had a wonderful time in Osaka, Himeji, Nara, Kyoto, Uji and Tokyo. Thanks to your other videos (and other youtuber videos), I'm relieved to say that we didn't break any of these rules and we were well-prepared for our trip. 😁 We noticed a few things when we were there and wanted to get your opinion on this. 1) We're from Canada, and as you know, we drive on the right, we mostly walk on the right. However, when we arrived in Japan, we noticed that people don't walk on the left. If we don't consider the tourists, who are still trying to get used to walking on the left, the locals seem to walk wherever they can. When we arrived in Osaka station, it was in the middle of rush hour and it was super crowded, there were multiple walking flows and we realised quickly just to merge into one of the flows instead of trying to stick to the left. 😅 2) We were surprised to see cyclists on the sidewalk. This is a big no-no in our part of Canada, and even if there are no reserved bike lanes, the cyclists are expected to be on the street with the cars. 3) In the elevator, it took us some time to realise this but we noticed that if a person is standing at the front of the elevator, even if they're getting off on the same floor as us, they'll push the "open doors" button to let us out first and then they'll get off after us. In our part of Canada, whoever stands at the front of the elevator will get off first so that other people can get off too. As a courtesy, we also do let women off first. But we rarely use the "open doors" button, unless we see someone trying to catch the elevator and we have enough time to quickly react to hold the doors open for them. We also rarely use the "close doors" button, which we noticed were being used frequently during our visit in Japan. Thanks!

Thank you! There are some places where walking direction is managed, especially in the big stations in Tokyo and Osaka. But otherwise, it's pretty much a free for all. Riding bicycles on the pavement is accepted, though legally I have a feeling it's a bit of a great area. If you saw some of the driving here you'd know why we can ride on the pavement. As for all the elevator stuff, yes, that's kind of standard, though not required. Another way to level up if you will. Thanks for sharing!

Mostly common sense. But good to review anyway. My one and only trip to Japan last year, I found Japanese people very friendly and helpful. And a few asked me to teach them English! LoL

Walking and eating is definitely a no-no, but nobody will look twice at you if you're walking down the street with a cup of coffee in your hand. Starbucks and coffee shops in general are everywhere you look.
