When I was in the ninth grade, when my English teacher told me to read the paraphrase, and I mispronounced a word, and she correct in a very harsh way. She criticized me in front of my classmates and I was really embarrassed at that time. And I also remember that when she told us to make an essay, and I was typographically incorrect and used an incorrect grammar, and she starts to belittle me again in front of many students. That's why I searched an English Teaching channel here in KZfaq and I saw this channel, and frankly speaking, I learned so much about English than my Teacher. Thank U Lucy! I really like your channel!

For me as a German it sometimes strikes me that the same sequence of letters can have so many different pronunciations in English. For example, many Germans get confused with the suffix "ate". They often pronounce "ultimate" like "ulti-mate" ("-ait") as in "late", "gate", "fate" and so on... Another example is the suffix "-ough", which can have so many different pronunciations that you have to memorise the pronunciation for every word that ends in it separately.

OMG YES I've started learning German and I was so admired by pronunciation in German (I'm not really sure this word is exactly correct but I hope you'll understand me (English is not my mother language tho)): it's really clear and, you know, non-varible as in English, and das ist fantastisch lol

That's the only real difficulty with English, its grammar is a piece of cake and so many words have Latin or Greek roots that it's easy to guess their meaning but its pronunciation 😱 ! Even a learned English speaker who comes across a new word in a book must check its pronuncation 🤔. As an English teacher used to tell us : an English word written "elastic" may well be pronounced "rubber"... or the other way round 😄 ...

It´s so good to know that some native speakers mispronounce the same words that I do as a non-native :p Yup, spelling is so confusing sometimes, and you try to predict the correct pronunciation according to other similar words but at the end you find out that you were wrong all the time. Thx Lucy!

Love seeing the variations from this side of the pond vs across the way. Plus by adding the hidden #19 in the video you secretly gave us a 21st word so bonus content on the main channel. I am a Lieutenant Colonel and I've always heard that the British did not want to pronounce it the French way ("col-o-nel") so they changed it to the "kernal" sound. I laso find it interesting that the British (it's your language after all) mispronounce some words, for example dropping the "a" in miltary; you say "mili-tree". Or adding a subtle "r" sound to end of words that end in "a". I had the aluminum vs. aluminium discussion with a British friend and we looked it up in a dictionary. "Aluminum" listed a description of the metal, bauxite ore, etc, and under "aluminium" it said "British for aluminum"; my friend was aghast...

Greenwich was the greatest surprise. Some British pronunciations is due to the fact that Britains "eat" some letters. They, for example, make the "r" in "iron" simply disappear.

I hear a lot of people here in Australia mispronouncing the words asks as arks and angle as ayngle and I've never been sure if it is a speech impediment. But most of also mispronounce the colour maroon as marone, and we pronounce yoghurt as yo-ghurt, not yoggut like most Brits I know.

Hei Plutten ! Dialekter er artige greier. Har slekt fra Brunskog (Brunske) i Värmland, og der de snakker svorsk. 😆 "Inn i vassen" er et flittig brukt nedarvet uttrykk, som få nordmenn forstår. 🤔 Sjøl knoter jeg litt på svensk og dansk om jeg må. Pluss engelsk, tysk og spansk. Hilsen fra Oslo ! 🤗

The link to this post said: 20 words you;re pronouncing wrong. Shouldn't that be wrongly? I was directing a theatre piece once, which involved a classically trained Italian singer. One of her lines was: "What's ailing me?" It took a lot of work to stop her saying: "Ayeeling" She couldn't help turning that diphthong into two syllables.
