Just a quick video showing how I changed the valve cover gasket on a 2001 Toyota Camry 4 cyl 2.2L 5SFE Motor. This is the same for 1997-2001. I also changed the PCV Valve, but not the grommet because we couldn't find one at the local parts store. I would recommend changing the pcv valve and grommet when you do this job.
Tools Needed:
30mm socket and torque wrench
14mm socket and/or wrench
flat razor blade or similar scraper
Needle Nose Pliers or similar to remove the hose clamps

Try a small toothbrush size dollar tree wire brush. They come with steel bristles,a bronze bristle brush and a nylon bristle brush. $1.25 can't beat it 👍👍👍

Should the two plastic clips that support the ignition cables be replaced since the studs on the clips broke off when you pulled them off the valve cover? Seems like they shouldn't be just left hanging in free air.

2001 Camry. I paid a local shop to replace my valve cover gasket. 1000 miles later, I’m again smelling burnt oil. My guess is that care wasn’t taken cleaning the old surfaces/1/2 round sealing etc. I noticed yesterday that the PCV hose is wet and I don’t see oil leaking around the gasket. The back side is difficult to see though. As so often is the case, I pay to have it done and end up redoing the job myself. Great video!! Your thoughts??

When a new gasket is put in, it will loosen a bit due to the material adjusting. After a few weeks it's a good idea to re-tighten the valve cover to 33 ft/lbs. Always tighten from center to outside such as #2, 3, 1, 4 then repeat tightening a bit more each time until correct factory spec torque is reached. Do not overtighten in anticipation of the higher torque.
