These cars were notorious for leaking oil at the valve cover. Most often it was due to bad machining from the factory. If you look down on the head you will see 4 place that are not level to the rest of the head… this is where you should apply Black RV silicon. If you don’t use something around those surface’s… you will be doing this again in few years. Speaking from experience.

Hello I did all this but used red RTV high temp silicone. Had blue also but thought this was a better choice. Cleaned throttle body real good. The valve cover nuts were so loose. And there was oil on the porcelain on number one cylinder but not on the electrode. Thought the oil might be wicking up in the wire. Sprayed extrinsic cleaner in all the spark plug wires. Replaced PCV valve and grommet looked very old. Cleaned out air box was full of junk. Air filter is new. Put fuel injector cleaner in the tank and dry gas in the tank. That's it so far. Car still hiccups here and there at slow speed under 20 mph. Confused!!!!! Any ideas?

So, this video is really packed with info and shows some good procedures. There are a few glaring errors that I think addressing could help avoid problems down the road (get it; the road). The biggest is that you put no RTV silicone on the spots that are recommended by almost all mechanical sources I have seen. You should put RTV silicone on parts of the mating surface of the cylinder head: www.camryforums.com/how-tos/a/toyota-camry-1997-2001-how-to-replace-valve-cover-gasket-396323 (see step 6). This prevents leaks in the near future. Another thing was that you recommended that "to remove the spark plug wires, just pull on them". If you want to buy new ones yeah, just pull on them. Another thing that amazed me was that you could pull out the PCV valve with pliers without breaking it. I didn't know that could be done. I might try that. The other thing was that you pulled the vent hose straight out without loosening the clamp or the hose. I was careful with mine and it cracked anyway. I saw one guy use a heat gun before pulling it out; worked great. Anyway Toyota charges about $22 for one of those. The openings are two different sizes. You did a good job of cleaning the mating surfaces. I watched some videos where they dropped dirt into the crankcase or sprayed brake cleaner into it. Also, I have seen a number of recommendations on how long to wait before driving the car. They all agree, it's 24 hours; that's to let the RTV silicone sealant fully cure. Finally, where did you get your 17 ft-lb torque number? The Haynes, Chilton and Toyota service manuals all recommend 33 ft-lbs for the 1997-01 Camry. I think the Gen.3 ones (1996 & earlier) were 17 ft-lbs.
@AutoFixYT
@AutoFixYT 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you mentioned above. Indeed I should have used some RTV but it is now a year later and not a drop of oil has seeped through any part of the gasket. The valve cover and head are bone dry on the outside. So I guess I got lucky there. Also yes, pulling on the plug wires wasn't the best decision. As for the vent hose, yeah idk how I was able to just pull it off... but I did. That clamp was completely shot and the hose was pretty hard. And the torque, yes I must have read it for the previous generation. I did however go past 17ft lbs. It seemed a little loose to me. Otherwise, thanks for the feedback! And I appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed comment. I take any feedback seriously so I can improve my videos!

You should have removed the spark plug tubes and put a sealant on them and reinstall while you had the cover off. Bad seal around the tubes is causing all that oil to lean into the spark plugs.
@AutoFixYT
@AutoFixYT 5 жыл бұрын
The spark plug tubes shouldn't need any sealant/RTV, the only thing that prevents oil from getting in them is the tube seals at the top. I changed those and not a drop of oil has seeped through since!

That's very strange... So you're saying there is oil on the spark plug where the wire connects, right? Make sure you tighten down the valve cover well, not too much or you'll crush the rubber and ruin the seal, and not enough and it won't seal up. Other than that I have no idea what it could be

If you mean the tube seals that come with the valve cover gasket then yes, you just remove the 30mm nuts holding down the valve cover and pop them out. If you mean the sealant that holds the base of the tubes in place then no.

i dont see how oil gets into the spark plug tube from the top. cant it come from the bottom of the tube?
@AutoFixYT
@AutoFixYT 6 жыл бұрын
R Hand Not really, because at the bottom is the combustion chamber where the is no oil, just gasoline and air. Oil can get on the spark plug between the tube and where the tube meets the valve cover, that's why it has rubber rings around the tubes. When those get old, the seal between the tube and valve cover isn't good anymore and oil leaks through. It's obviously best to avoid getting to that point though.
@xXFraudXx
@xXFraudXx 4 жыл бұрын
@@AutoFixYT This is also incorrect. The rubber seals at the top of the spark plug tubes are to prevent oil from coming out of the valve cover at the nuts, not from penetrating into the tubes. If there is oil in your tubes it is penetrating from the bottom of the tube which is also threaded like the top. You need to remove the tube, clean it thoroughly with a wire brush, and apply rtv to the threads on the tube and inside the head. There's a few videos if you want to watch. There are no flats on the tube to grab with a wrench/pliers so double the nuts used to retain the valve cover, with the lower nut upside down, and that will give you something to torque on. Good luck.
@ankersman
@ankersman 3 жыл бұрын
@@xXFraudXx Thank you. I wondered what the purpose of those are, now I know. I've got oil in the tubes of three of them, so they'll have to come out using the double nut method.
@xXFraudXx
@xXFraudXx 3 жыл бұрын
@@ankersman it's a super easy job, and actually kind of fun if you like wrenching. You should do all 4 if you get in there, just so that last one doesn't start leaking on you afterwards. These engines are such troopers, I've got a 98, the body is shot and it needs some steering and suspension work, it's reached the point its no longer worth putting money into parts, but that engine wants to live. Still plenty of life left with almost 300k miles. Wish all cars were built this well. Good luck with yours.

My car Toyota Camry LE 2007 model is burning too much oil , please suggest what to do .
@AutoFixYT
@AutoFixYT 2 жыл бұрын
You can try running thicker oil, but if it's burning a lot it will need to be fixed internally. It either needs valve seals or piston rings, both of which require extensive engine work. So if you don't want to do it or pay someone to do it, you might have to live with it. Make sure you change the oil often on it. People don't change it often enough and this is what it can cause. I suggest 5k miles a most between oil changes. If the car takes 5w-30 you can try 5w-40. But also if it has VVTi don't go too thick or it will mess with the timing and could throw a CEL, since it works through oil pressure. Hope this helps!

If your valve cover does not leak without RTV (silicone gasket maker), then don't put any on. If you want to, or of it leaks, then you can apply RTV to the areas where the valve cover goes over the camshaft end bearings. Apply it in the bottom two corners, and any other areas that you think need RTV. But do not use much at all. Let the gasket do the job, otherwise it WILL leak if you put RTV all over and a gasket. Good luck!
