Toyota wants $900 + to do just the timing belt! I watched your video again, ordered parts from Toyota for belt only, no water pump, ordered the damper holding tool, went to Harbor Freight and got damper puller and started the job last Friday afternoon and finished up today, Monday at 3:30 pm. This was 2nd timing belt for this HL, this time belt had 115K miles and about 10 years old (210K on vehicle). I ran into problems: crank bolt felt like it welded in place, took 2+ hours to break it free! Had to remove PS hose from reservoir and drain PS reservoir so could get hose out of way from top belt cover removal. The lower stud on the engine mount brkt support, under the upper belt cover, the torx tip broke off but I was able to get the brkt out anyway. Putting the timing belt itself on was a major pain but I finally got all the marks on belt/pulleys to line up, released the tensioner, rotated the engine twice by hand and all looked good. Alternator belt was a major pain, the tensioner screw would'nt back out enough so I could get belt on so had to pull alternator, fiddle around with tensioner screw and then reinstall and get tensioner screw secured back in place and the belt still had to be pryed on over the damper. Very tight working conditions, my hands are all cut up and bruised, but the HL started and ran fine on the drive around the neighborhood afterward, so it's a win!! I'm 74 years old by the way, this was tough job for me! $408 in parts and tools.

So you saved $500 by doing it yourself. Did you have to turn the crankshaft counterclockwise 60 degree like he did in the video? I think I heard 36mm socket he used. I'm about to do it very soon.

Agreed that it's a GREATLY entertaining and extremely helpful repair video!! EXCEPT: I am extremely concerned about the alignment of the belt to the crankshaft sprocket. I have done timing belts on a few dozen different cars, and never seen anything that called out for something like "the first tooth engaged". Every one I have ever done specifies aligning belt marks to pulley sprocket/pulley marks. I did a web search for where to set the sprocket/pulleys vs. the belt, and every place I saw specified lining the dots on the belt to the mark on the sprocket. Only second time I have done a timing belt on a Toyota V6, so it's possible I am wrong. But I STRONLY encourage anyone using this video as their gospel to do a search for this one point themselves. Again, I picked up a lot of great tips from this! Just want to try to make sure no one goes through all the work and has a problem. We're all just beggars telling each other where we've found bread......

It is really a good video. As far Installing the timing belt , I found the technique used by another car KZfaqr, Car Cat Nut, to be the easiest. The technique is basically to install the #2 idler pulley last, after installing the belt around the cam sprockets, #1 idler pulley, the water pump pulley, and the crank gear. That was the easiest way of installing the timing belt because there is enough slack in the belt without the #2 pulley installed. You simply push the belt down and install the #2 Idler pulley. Then, you pull the pin on the tensioner. Also regarding how to remove seals, I found the method of using a screw driver as shown by the Care Care Nut video to be easier. Regarding how to tension the power steering belt, the method described by other commentars in this video to be god sent. Basically, you need a large pry bar (24 inch). You jam the tip of the pry bar on the large washer and use the car body weld as a fulcrum point.

Thank you very much for posting this video. I replaced seals, water pump, pullleys, timing belt and tensioner on my 2006 Highlander. With out the tips in your video, I would not be able to complete the job. The 3.3 V6 is an interference type engine and one should rotating the cam or the crank too much from the top-dead-center while the timing belt is removed. That means some degree of minor clockwise or anticlockwise rotation is reqired during timinng belt chnage. I am glad about your tip for using 1-1/4 inch 6 point socket for rotating the crank.

Thank you! And I do have one tip to add. At the 26 min mark, for tightening the power steering belting, simply use a long pry bar like this: Put it on the top of the large washer on that upper bolt (use the corner of the bar tip and go into the bracket slot some) and put the middle of the pry bar (the fulcrum point) on the pinch weld in the top of the opening. If you use a pry bar, the arch will leave room underneath for the ratchet. Piece of cake! Also, I made my own timing marks off to the side for the rear cam since I couldn't see the top. “Ok, bye.” :)

The way you did would work, but I think you had the belt backward. The arrow on the belt should point outward not inward. The notch on the crank sprocket should line up with the line on the belt. If you flip the belt around, the line on the belt should line up with the notch on the crank sprocket.

Yup, I did it this way. Then took it off and flipped it and that dotted line matched the dot on the crank gear. The arrows point from the belt out to front of the engine. Live and learn!

I used this video for my guide line. Unfortunately my crankshaft seal is leak and the seal was bought from dealer. I checked all surfaces before installing it. Seal is easy to insert in. Would you tell me what I did work? And how do I fix it? I did many times before and didn't have any problem. Thank you in advance.
@RustBeltAuto

You probably have a wear ring in the crank, junk in the seal, ir a defective seal. If there is a wear ring, you need to put the seal in a different location. Usually further out.
