Ive had a few of these trucks over the years just because of age and the cost of one of these engines and a lot of repair unknowns i always flush then replace radiator, thermostat, waterpump, fan clutch, idler pulley and belt as a start point, so say its like 5 or 6 hundred bucks you want that engine as a goal to run at 190 consistently..gates, or 4seasons and for the love of god replace the overflow bottle, while you can get at everything fairly easy check your clamps for weeping and tight.

Yeah, in hind sight I should have replaced the idler pulley, too. Something I noticed with the new fan clutch is that the fan spins all the time, hot or cold. Not sure if the old one did that or not. I thought they were only supposed to spin when the engine is hot. This thing takes forever to warm up.

@@doitallgaragetx they do spin all the time in kinda a passive mode it’s when they get hot they lock up and start digging in and move a lot of air, and they are all cold blooded that’s lot of iron to heat up they don’t generate a lot of BTU’s until you get on them a little.

Couldn't the over heating be your heater core as well?Also they make dash veneer covers that stick on and keep it in one piece, made mine look brand new. Thanks for the tips

I have a new heater core in the box. Still haven't replaced it because when I take my dash off, its going to break into 100 pieces. I'm not going to replace it until I have a new dash and all new a/c parts sitting in front of me. Not sure if a clogged heater core could cause over heating. But I'm no master tech....
