Thanks for making this, my son overheated my lancer today & pulled plugs cuz would not start & water shot out each cylinder! Really hoping can save motor. Watching this helped answer a lot of questions!! Gonna give it a try! Looks like a lot of work! I am old school mechanic that likes my old 68 firebird or my 66 Chevy truck! Easier to twist wrench on & fix or remedy yourself! 56 year old man gonna give this Japanese beer can a try to repair!! Thanks!

Really thoughtful of you putting all this detailed information out there from all your experiences just for the sake of helping others, it motivated me to try this on my own getting some of the parts out was a challenge, it's always like a puzzle with barely enough room to move your knuckles but I was successful in getting to the head gasket unfortunately the coolant ports are corroded so i have to get a head or an engine 🙄.

I laughed pretty good with "especially with whatever genius did this job" -reused torque to yield head bolts and broke it off. I have the head @ a machine shop and getting it pressure tested, machined and a valve job. I followed your advice with a few razor blades and scotch bright pads to clean up the head, intake/exhaust manifolds. I'm ready to get the head back on and fire the motor up. Once it's running good I'm doing the timing belt & water pump. Really appreciate all the help. You are a great mechanic and helped me so much. Thx

@Alan, great video Sir. I have an ‘02 lancer which doesn’t start. Tried to check the compression and there’s oil all over spark plugs. Three of the coils are stuck. Took out one and did a compression test. It’s at 35. Sometimes goes to 60. Do you think I can further investigate it by changing the head gasket or junking is better?

Question!!! What size socket for the head bolts??? great video!!
@kerman559sanchez4
@kerman559sanchez4 5 жыл бұрын
It's a 10mm 12 point socket, I recommend using a 3/8 drive style but it's still doable with a 1/2 inch drive too, only thing is that the two front middle head bolts next to the front center head bolt will get stuck because the 1/2 inch drive socket is too fat, but I just turned them clockwise a bit and turned them out by hand.

Once you have the motor lined up with timing marks, you can remove the belt. With the belt off, don't rotate the cam or crank while assembled.

Hi Alan. I have a question. I got my head back from the machine shop (they machined/pressure tested and did a valve job). I'm put the cam back in and ready to do the rocker arm/lash lifters. The FSM says to clean and fill up the lifters with diesel fuel and install. Did you do that? Or just bleed the lifters? I'm trying to avoid the lifter noise issue on auto adjusting lifters on the Lancer.
@AlanFixedIt
@AlanFixedIt 4 жыл бұрын
Ben Hutchins you can soak them to pre fill them. Better safe than sorry, but on this car I did neither and it self bled and was quiet. They aren’t the same as say a v8 lifter that are super important to soak/bleed. These are pretty forgiving. As long as the passage ways and oil are clean it will pump itself up.

One more question. The crank is at TDC but since I had the valve job, I need to get the cam back to TDC. I put the cam back in and just want to triple check that I get the cam to TDC. I'm planning on putting the rocker arm and lifters on the head with the cam and then marking the Timing belt (which I zipped tied to the cam sprocket) and then removing the cam sprocket and putting it on the cam/head and rotating to cam/valves to TDC. The 1st and 4th pistons are TDC and I want to get the Cam/valves to TDC. Do I just rotate the cam and verify that the intake valves are about to open and line up the cam/timing marks? On your video you mentioned getting it right or one more rotation on the cam would be bad (1 rotation of crankshaft = 2 rotations of the cam). I just want to be sure I get it right. On TDC for the intake valves should the 1st /4th be ready to open when lined up with timing mark on cam?

@@AlanFixedIt I just loaded a video of where I'm at with the Lancer. Really appreciate your knowledge kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNxiqrOWsJbeqGQ.html
@AlanFixedIt
@AlanFixedIt 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, just make sure the cam sprocket is close in position like in the video and it will be good, what I mean by making another rotation is, if it off 180 degrees or so then you would have to rotate the cam. But the timing mark will only line up on the cam in 1 orientation. So put it together, put the sprocket in loosely enough to rotate the assembly with the head off the car, make sure it’s at least close to the timing marks lining up and slap it on

Jeremy Owensby @11:44 in the video I show the 2 bolts holding it on. I accessed it from the passenger side with a ratchet. They can be tight, so you may need a longer handled ratchet, breaker bar or a short pipe to slip over your ratchet Handle. If this doesn’t answer your question, please expound and I’ll do my best!

If I understand your question, as long as the timing marks are lined up on the crank pulley, and the #1 cylinder is all The way up then you are at TDC. If the timing marks are lined up but the #1 cylinder is not all the way up, then rotate the motor 1 roatation and it should be up.
