Full detailed video on how to replace the Mitsubishi Lancer Timing chain on a 2009 2.0L NA engine.
Dash displayed red triangle : Manual indicated Worn Timing chain. This engine has 100,000 km on it. 11 years old at the time and city driving by previous owner.
After work was completed I had the tire TPMS sensors re-programmed in and in that process also cleared the timing chain warning and it has not come back ( 2 weeks ). Car runs and drives great and it may not have needed the replacement in the end.
Also recommend doing a valve clearance adjustment.... I will work on that for another video as well.
This is the first timing chain I have ever done and video for this car and channel. I have done one timing belt in the past. I am no expert or accredited mechanic in any way. I am just a DIY guy and if I can share and help someone else, that is why I post the videos.
This is the 4B11 engine that is in many Mitsubishi models that include the following in some of the trim levels.
2007 - 2017 Lancer
2009 Outlander
2012 and 2013 Outlander
2010 ASX and RVR ( canada )
2007 - 2021 Delica
2018 Eclipse Cross

Hello RB Custom Wraps!, that was a good video, if you can do more videos for your Mitsubishi Lancer about the engine, performance or maintenance as well that will be amazing, also, like you say there's no many good videos about the Lancer, so thanks for the video!

I live in the USA where did you purchase the timing chain kit? And is it running good now? You mentioned timing chain warning came on did your scanner pick up that warning? Cause I just saw exclamation mark on dash only.

2011 lancer with 4b11 only 62,000 miles no compression in one cylinder. Car was running fine shut off then simply wouldn’t start. Best way to diagnose if timing chain skipped or could be something else? Hate to scrap engine not knowing for sure if engines damaged.

Hello from Sweden and thank you for your useful video! In Sweden this car is not so popular and I don't know nothing about Mitsubishi! Actually I promised to my friend to build his car with little more naturally HP! My friends car is Lancer 1.8, My question is if 4b10 and 4b11 has the same size on block bore and strock or not? My plan is if both has the same size could find a Crankshaft and 4 piston and rod for his car and change them. Thank you

@@rbcustomwraps1157 that means that the valve lash needs to be adjusted. My 4B11 Lancer does it too and I need to swap them (my valve lash was last adjusted by Mitsubishi at 90,000 KM and my car is now at 180,000 KM). It's a really tedious and painful process as you need to remove the cams (intake and exhaust) to actually swap the buckets/tappets. You also need a timing chain tensioner release bar (Tomei makes one) to hold it in place as you remove the cams otherwise you'll have to go through what you did in this video all over again. The most critical part of the whole procedure is to have high quality feeler gauges and a micrometre that is calibrated. One of my two were not calibrated correctly so I now have to re-measure everything all over again (which means more wasted gaskets). Also, use a torque wrench when tightening the rocker cover bolts. Do not risk doing it by 'feel' manually and guess the torque. If one of those bolts snaps in the aluminium block, it's going to be a real nightmare to get out. The correct torque and rotation sequence is also critical to ensuring no leaks and that the gasket seats right. For more information, check the Mitsubishi Service Manual as it has highly detailed illustrations. Cheers from Australia.

How does this thing need a timing chain so early?
@rbcustomwraps1157
@rbcustomwraps1157 2 жыл бұрын
It actually didn't in the end. the Dash warning light of the Red Exclamation triangle..... according to the manual is a timing chain warn warning. This ended up being a false warning. The only way to inspect the wear is to open it up anyways and check the tensioner. And since I did it myself, parts from rockauto were less than $200, it really was not that bad. The red triangle warning light ended up being related to the TPMS sensors on the tires that were not reset. Once those were reset, both warnings went away. And i had a new timing chain as well in the end.... that I will never have to do again on this car. The dash warnings are really garbage on this car for this. And i was not about to pay $500 just to have it inspected at the dealer when i could do the work myself and replace it for a fraction of the "inspection" cost.

Would you be able to name and list all the seals and gaskets you used or took off? I want to change all of them anyway while I'm at it and I have 270,000 kilometers. Assuming it's never been done before, I want to be thorough.
@rbcustomwraps1157

Sorry for the late reply, there really is only one gasket and that's the valve cover. the seal on the side is high temp gasket putty you use, as well as a small amount on the valve cover right at the spot where the timing cover attaches. There is also a crank shaft seal you can replace as well. 4 parts I ordered: Timing chain kit crank shaft seal valve cover gasket timing cover seal I used rockauto

Its the same engine in 2008-2012 outlander ? Is it relible ? How the cvt holds ?
@rbcustomwraps1157
@rbcustomwraps1157 2 жыл бұрын
The timing chain part number is the same as the 2.0L and the 2.4L inline 4cyl. so, if your outlander has the 2.4L 4 cyl, then yes, it would be the same part and the same procedure I would think. The part numbers for the tensioners are also the same. As for reliability. I would say pretty damn good. I dont know of any major issues with them other than pre-mature chain stretch.... especially on the Evo's. I have driven plenty of these cars with 250,000 km on them and other than exhaust leaks the owner can't be bothered to fix, the engine itself was strong and ran well. I should also add that the CVT part. aka the automatic transmission is garbage.... mostly. it has a high failure rate. Which is why we have a 5speed manual.

@@user-tx1vy3dk6p Yes, there are a lot of used cars out there and it is a real pain to find a good one. Every brand or model could have issues and lots can be good too. finding a model you like is the easy part, finding a good one is not. Biggest suggestion i can make is when you look at a used car, ALWAYS make sure the engine is cold and they didnt run it before you got there to "warm it up" . A cold start on any engine is a telling point of how good it is and if it was well maintained. Most of the time if someone warms it up, or has it running when you get there is either hiding something or is just clueless on how to sell a car.

Why are you changing the timing chain they are good for the life of the engine .
@rbcustomwraps1157
@rbcustomwraps1157 3 жыл бұрын
When the computer system says that the timing chain is worn with a warning and if you look at any lancer forum, the chains on these engines stretch prematurely and are prone to overstretching and require replacement. definitely NOT good for the life of the engine. besides, parts were cheap and I no longer have any concern about it.
@bEEBO178
@bEEBO178 2 жыл бұрын
There's a design flaw with the chains in these. I have an Evo X with 28k miles and changing mine. They changed the design after 2012 with a much stronger chain. The old ones have known to jump teeth and even snap which destroys the engine so its pretty much standard to replace the old style chain.
