In this video, I show you around my car, its condition, what I've discovered thus far, and highlighting some noteworthy features I'd never thought this car had until buying it.
Some info on the vehicle: the car I bought is a 2003 520i. It belonged to the final run out batch of the E39 before it was phased out for the E60. Car is impressively equipped for a base model 5 Series - electric seats with memory, auto-tilting side mirrors, rear sunshades, dual zone climate control, 10 airbags, electronic stability control, memory key.
Powering the car is the 2.2-litre version of BMW's M54 inline-six engine with Double VANOS. Rated outputs of the engine is 170PS and 210Nm which, matched to the car's 1.6-tonne kerb weight does not translate to stellar performance. Still, the engine is buttery smooth and is a delight to rev.

Hi Kon, congratulations on your new E39. Just to share regarding the keys for the BMW, we own since brand new and it only came with 2 Master Keys (No.1) and 1 Spare key (No.2). We didn't get the Jockey Key (No.3). Great videos bro, looking forward on your upcoming episodes :-)

Sweet ride Kon! Im driving E60 currently suffer the same roof lining problem as your but I had mine fix for half the price you mention. First you need to find a good furniture maker (those custom made furniture maker that made furniture for cafe or pubs) or shops that fix furniture. Make sure you ask about the price. Most probably most of them knows how to redo the lining. Get wearnes to remove the head board and send it to them. This is how I had my E60 headboard fix. Good luck!

Last time my dad used to have an E280 2000. Not a bad car, but it was plague with serious air-conditioning breakdowns, broken gasket, and many more. But apart from those issues, the car looks sexy. The interior quality and design stood the test of time. The V6 is smtg that doesn't appear in many 400,000 Benz nowadays unless u are talking about the C43. Gave me many memories. Compared to your car, your car definitely has more quirks and features to spare. I also rode in people's E39 before. Love the exhaust note.

Yeah. It's great to see Mercedes now leading the market now in offering 6-cylinder engines. We all know 4-cylinders are the bread and butter, but at this range, it's nice to hv a 6-cylinder model to aspire to.

Fun fact, the wiper blade setup was also the same in the E60. Oddly I think the E90 onwards they did flip it - I noticed the non flipped version, the right arm (driver side on RHD cars) actually not only swings left and right, but it also moves up and down slightly. Also lol on the reflectors, worst modern offender is the F30.

Yeah, I used to think it was only the E60 that did not flip the wipers, but turns out that the E39 also did not flip them. But looking at the movement of the blades, this does seem like a more expensive solution.

Last year i received a 2004 merc w220 for free from my friend which he upgraded to a new w222, i was wrong for underestimating the car. Although it is a 14 years old car, the technology are superb. And also i was very lucky because 1 week before my friend offered me his w220, i was about to give my loan application docs for a VW Jetta. Ya its definately an uncle car , but it offer a very2 comfy ride for my family.

nice car bro, congrats. i do have suggestions for you to fix your roof liner. you need an "ABRO spray on adhesive". you may buy it from ACE Hardware or ebay. cost you nothing.i did before on my E46. and 100% works! command european problem for its age. you just need to undo the whole pieces,and spray the ABRO on the cloth liner, dry it, and put it back on..very easy for your's compared to mine which need etxra work as i got the bloody sunroof.

The E34 had that feature to tilt the mirrors down when you put it into Reverse, Not sure if all models had it as standard as the one I know that had it was the 525i and it was a local Auto Bavaria car as well that my dad owned for some years before it was replaced with an E60 that did not stay with him for long.

13:40 my Jaguar X-Type also has halogen projector headlights :) other brands like Renault, Opel and Peugeot did it on mid ranged cars later on in the 2000’s..

We also go the facelift E39s with amber indicators in Australia (rare though). Tidy looking BMW you got there. I got an 02 525i m sport in this silver with those wheels (although mine are staggered).

Most Style 66 wheels I can find in the market are staggered size, but I avoided them because the rear tyres are rare and expensive in our market. How much do your tyres cost over there?

@@KonWaiLuen Yeah expensive here too. I do love having wide tyres in the rear with the m sport bumpers. Tyres (255 40 R17) can cost anywhere from $150 to $400 Australian dollars over here.

Had an E280 before. Broke down very often, air-conditioning was blowing warm air. But damn… really stable at high speed. No issues when we hit the touge, and guess what? The exterior has an excellence appearance that does not make me feel inferior when my W210 was parked beside a new Accord.

interestingly, my '97 E36 328i has similar headlight design as the E39.. with projector halogens with cut-off. another interesting fact is.. my rear centre armrest has a compartment inside plus cupholders.

I'm impressed by the amount of airbags this car has. In terms of safety I think this car fair quite well with modern cars or heck, even better. What I find it funny and laugh till my stomachache is the saggy roof liner, hahaha why BMW can't make a good roof liner, that's funny. And I've heard BMW user that their sunroof can fall, that's too funny... How much was this car selling when brand new? I think the additional cost of this car when compared to other makes(eh Japan) of similar sized engine and segment gives you the additional things to play with such as the airbags, TC, memory seats, sunshades, rear airconds, adjustable headlamps, programmable car keys/jockey key, electric seats etc etc. And of course the overall chassis is the deal in this car.

Sounds like you're looking for an E60. 2004 batch is still using M54 engine like the E39, so the same maintenance advice applies. Check your cooling system, DISA valve, and ignition coils. For the E60, active steering system is known to be problematic, so getting a unit without one is a bonus. The transmission mechatronic unit is also non repairable. Must be changed in the event of failure.

Road tax was RM551 for 2,171cc. Insurance was RM1,042 for insured value of RM22k, but before NCD discount.

Essentials: - Engine oil levels to check for oil consumption - Cooling system: water pump and expansion tank are known weak points. - OBD diagnostic to check that electronics are in working order - ATF has been changed before - Suspension bushes - Ignition coils and spark plugs Interior - sagging roofliner - broken switch gears - LCD pixels

Hi Kon, I know this is unrelated to the video, and I apologize for that. I recently got my car back from repairs after an accident. I noticed that my car, a 2018 Persona, now has a constant vibration that is widespread throughout the car. I can feel it in the pedals and the steering wheel as well. My engine also seems to be running louder than before. May I know if this is something you face as well?

Depends on where you are. You definitely shouldn't change tyres by the side of moving traffic, but I still find it useful to carry a spare. At least when I'm faraway, I can limp to a safe location, patch myself up, and carry on.

I think the E60 never came with reverse cameras (at least not standard anyway) and most likely not front cameras as well. The cameras in your dad's car are likely aftermarket installations.
