The transmission can take up to 12.5 quarts total. If you drop the pan, be prepared to have 2 - 5 gallon jugs on standby. I only used 5 quarts. @8:09

Try to pull the diagnostic codes using an OBDII code reader. But it sounds like you have internal issues such as the solenoid control module and possibly the overdrive band.

Will it move in reverse, or other gears such as 1, 2, D, etc? Have you checked the fluid level? Does it have any check engine lights or fault codes you can pull? Try those and I'll see if I can help.

All 5R55 transmissions are 5 speeds. The 5R55 is a rear wheel drive 5-speed that appeared in 1999 and later vehicles. The 5R55W came out in the 2002 and later Ford Explorer and Ford Ranger models. The 5R55N appeared in the Jaguar S-Type and Lincoln LS and in 2002 in the Ford Thunderbird. The 5R55S without the Select Shift is used in the 2005 and later models of the ford Mustang. In 2003 the Thunderbird and Lincolns switched to the 5R55S that had the Select Shift (allows drivers to shift like a standard without the clutch).

The reasoning behind keeping the old fluid is to keep the contamination/particles in the fluid flow to help the clutches/bands continue to do their job and have friction. If you put in new fluid and the transmission has alot of wear, you could see it start slipping. Not due to the new fluid, but due to the fact that the parts are worn with little to no friction materials. In reality changing the filter and not the fluid is a waste of time as the fluid is still burned/old and simply filtering it is only removing more of the contaminants but not changing the viscosity or lubrication properties of old/used/burnt fluid. In my experience this does not happen as frequently in newer style transmissions vs. old school ones. But proper maintenance can help increase the longevity of the internal components. Simple answer - if it's not slipping now and hasn't been serviced properly, just leave it alone until it does then do a complete rebuild.

What year is it? Sounds like something is broken/burned-up to me. If it is in gear and not moving or moving slowly it is either low fluid or your pump has failed.

@@98saleen it is a 2005 ford explorer, it drives about 20mph in first gear, I am getting a “sensor fault” and check engine code on the dash now, I am wondering if it could be the knocking system has failed? That would cause decreased acceleration too right? Ahh so many possibilities :/

Hello my 2003 explorer 4.0 liter 5 speed automatic transmission just quit working no warning everything was fine with it I went out and started it up and went to leave and when I put it in gear nothing it acts like its in neutral in all gears except for park it works fine there was no codes that came up on it at all what could it be there is no line pressure I was thinking maybe the selinoid in the pump is stuck open other than that I’m clue less so please any help will be greatly appreciated

It's a 5 speed. D will shift 1-5 gears normally, just like any other car. Push the O/D OFF button will lock out 5th gear, and shift 1-4 under a modified shift map for better towing. 1,2,3 locks the transmission in those respective gears.

@@supersnot4 No they don't work like that, they are a 3 speed with 2 overdrives, if you turn off O/D you only have 3 gears.

@@yeahrightmate That is incorrect, 4th gear is still available with OD off as it is not considered an overdrive gear. This can be confirmed by manually shifting up from a stop. I just pulled a nearly 7000lb horse trailer about 400 miles across the Mojave Desert with my '03 Explorer 4.6. In D at 65mph it sits around 2K RPM. O/D off it sits around 3K RPM. 3rd sits around 4K RPM. These fluctuate a little when the torque converter engages and disengages.

@@supersnot4 Well on the shifter and the trans shifter linkage there is only 1st, second, drive, neutral, reverse and park the same as a 3 speed. I will check with my overdrive turned off and see how many gears it changes but it is off the road for another week getting work done then I will do a check.

If you are talking about the engine oil, that would be 5 quarts with the filter. I use a Motorcraft FL-820S filter and Valvoline 5W-30 synthetic oil.

If it's been 10 years since you had the transmission serviced, it is way past due. There is some truth behind not changing the fluid and filter as over years the clutches will wear and remove material which floats around in your fluid what doesn't get caught by filter. This helps the transmission to move with the friction. Sometimes by pulling out the fluid and filter and putting in new fluid you don't have that amount of material to help move the vehicle, which can cause the transmission to slip. My suggestion is to drop pan and change filter and refill the fluid you lose when dropping pan. But do NOT flush the entire system. You should not have any problems but it is a good idea to keep the filter changed to avoid problems in the future! Good luck!

@@98saleen gracias por su consejo otra duda cree que la otra posibilidad es cambiarle el aceite viejo pero guardarlo en un resipiente nuevo y limpio para que en caso de que la transmisión no funcione bien con el nuevo aceite volver a ponerle el viejo qué ya contiene las rebabas? Cree que sea buena idea?

That's cool. Yes that adapter is just putting lipstick on a pig so they can charge more money. LOL

If high mileage (over 100k) then it will probably have to be pulled out and inspected for damaged/worn parts. I had to go thru mine and have it rebuilt internally.

It's the factory W model.
