2003 Jeep Liberty radiator fan motor replacement

I just fixed my son's 2003 Jeep Liberty... the fan wasn't coming on. It had the same symptoms described here (fuse was good, no codes so the relay and thermostat were likely good). However, when I put power directly to the fan (using a fused power supply) the fan ran. I traced the problem to the connector into which the fan pig tail plugs... It was shorted. I removed the connector and soldered the wires together and it works just fine. I suppose I could have gotten new male and female connectors and sliced them in... but why bother... it's a 17 year old Jeep! Other than my time it cost basically nothing to repair my son's Jeep. The moral of the story is don't automatically assume that the fan motor is bad as outlined in the video... there is alternative problem that will produce the same symptoms.

Thanks for the vid. About a month ago my radiator cracked on my ‘04 Liberty. I replaced that and didn’t have any issues until this week. When I’m sitting in traffic the temp keeps climbing, then when I start rolling again it drops back down to normal. I thought it may be the thermostat, but after watching this vid I’m going to check the fan. I’m very green at car repair so it’s a pretty steep learning curve. Thanks for the vid!!!

Thank you for taking the time to put together this great informative video. I was ready to buy a test kit for a head gasket leak and start searching for coolant leaks. Because of your video, I checked the fan first. All I had to do was disconnect my fan and use a meter to see that it was getting power to the plug... didn't even need to check relays etc.

Here is a useful tip for you , Most Chrysler products with OBD II have a little known Easter egg , If you get in the car and close the door , turn the ignition ( without starting ) on , off , on , off , on quickly and leave it on the third time , the odometer will read out the trouble codes. Save yourself a trip to Autozone if you don't have a scan tool.

Thanks Sir! My 03 Liberty Limited 3.7 103k seized up the factory a/c this summer so I removed that and ran a shortened cheater belt to compensate. Ran somewhat warmer since water pump not fully tensioned that way. Yesterday went full red hot and blew out most of the antifreeze. Dealer ripped me $390 for a new a/c idler replacement pulley, belt, antifreeze fill up, and said water pump and alternator needed replaced too but I ran out of cash by then. Alternator is fine as is, yet I'm still at 3/4 on the temp gauge... but guess what? Yep, fan not turning! So, would've needed belt and antifreeze anyway. I can trade idler core back for 1/2 price - waiting for next Spring to replace the a/c. But without seeing this he'd have got me for another $275 to replace a functional water pump and $350 for a new alternator, when getting a proper belt and fixing the fan is the solution! Thanks again! ... and yes, NO thanks to Jeep for their useless warning system on that! What I got was hot gauge and alternator light - NO CODES!!!

Serpentine belt broke and caused engine heat to rise. That made pressure build up in radiator. The radiator had a tiny crack on the side at the top. I had noticed that every couple of weeks the radiator water level was down about 1/4 gallon. Bought a radiator & put & installed along with new hoses & thermostat. 8 months later radiator water level hasn't changed.

I had a cooling problem simultaneous with an Alternator burn out. I learned one relates to the other. Codes P-1682 Alternator. P-1491 main fan relay, the one located down on the right front fender well as you face the vehicle. I replaced the relay, alternator, and engine coolant thermo sensor. Cleared ecm codes and thought all was well. Next thing I find out that afternoon was we overheated with a/c on. "No ecm codes" ?????? P.O. very much because we were not close to home. This gentleman nails it! Replace fan motor and for a few bucks more with peace of mind just replace the high and low relays located in the relay/fuse box by the battery. If you replace the main fan relay and the thermo sensor you have illuminated all potential problems. Our car is 12 years old and has been great car with few problems, some recalls yes but a good safe car. Easy to work on and I like it.

Other things I found were the gasket around the overflow reservoir cap was split. I put a new Cap on the overflow reservoir, that helped. My radiator had a small crack on the side. It leaked about a gallon per month. I would have never found it, but my serpentine belt broke when tensioner pulley bearing locked up. I replaced bearing, all hoses, thermostat & I replaced the radiator and then the car ran perfectly. The radiator can be separated from the condenser and therefore can be done at home.

Good luck with the Jeep. It is definitely a money pit. After I got all the temp problems corrected sludge would build up in the oil & cause oil light to come on. I took oil pan off & cleaned it out & then it circulated oil fine until 4 k miles latter, had to pull oil pan & clean pickup screen.

The problem I have is when driving for long periods of time white smoke and burnt smell. Checked the coolant reservoir and was empty. Your fan motor is a two speed motor. It may work connecting it straight to the battery at high speed, but then it may not work at low speed. Might also be radiator leaking. Watch your coolant fluid level. If you lose any fluid at all it’s most likely a small crack in the radiator. That was my problem. Once I replace the radiator, I have no more issues with the jeep overheating. The radiator can be removed and replaced without disconnecting any air conditioner lines. The condenser can be disconnected from the radiator, so it is possible to do at home in your garage.

Check cooling system for rust. Not only on reserve, but by opening the rad faucet on the passenger side of rad. Rust settles on lower side of rad after a few hours. Never buy an used car with a lot of rust in radiator. The engine and heater core is been eaten from the inside by rust. Run away from those big problems...

If the fan is working, there could be a restriction in the water flow to heater core. Or heater core could be disconnected. It is probably not a coincidence that the heat is not working & the vehicle is overheating. I corrected other problems with my Jeep, but the main problem was the radiator. You may also need heatercore, or valve to open water flow to heater core. The things that absolutely needed replacing on my car were the fan motor & radiator. The rest of it was probably not necessary.

@KingMrBigE

if the vehicle is up to normal temp and you turn the a/c on high and you dont hear the fan kick on, its usually bad. I did use one from Auto you know who and have had no issues with it for several years now. Today we discovered that the coolant reservoir cap has been going bad, causing the coolant to escape from the the tank and in turn has causes=d a mess of problems so I replaced the cap, hoses, serpentine, water pump and thermostat and housing. All is good in the world of our Jeep Liberty.

I'm going through the same thing. The fan works but not all the time. It's tricky because the Jeep doesn't over heat very often but it's been happening 1-2 times per month. Sometimes the fan works, sometimes not. I've changed the temp sensor, thermostat and radiator cap. We had some radiator problems, and has new radiator. I suspect I have a bad fan relay, fan, or fan connection. It's frustrating because it is intermitten.

What I did to test my fan is run lead to the fan to power it on or off. Some time the coolant fan switch will go bad and not send a code because of the open loot. You can short the line and also see if the fan turn on with the key in the on/acc and the fan will spin.. you right on the fan not given any code. And what I see when this happens is the coolant will fall on top of the spark plug coils giving you code like po300 po304 & po306.. to stop this from happening my TBS FOR THESE JEEP with expansion tank like this is get a rubber hose and put it leading away and down the frame of the jeep.. this was my TBS TO JEEP when these jeep over heat. 2004 liberty ... Temp gauge looks good but I'm having the burnt smoke/smell after driving from the reservoir area below. Fan comes on while engine running. I noticed the reservoir on the left side is filled to the top and the overflow to the right has some in it and does rise slightly but they may be because revving the engine forces it too. I remember it looking even across if it is overflowing properly and has the correct amount of fluid. I'm going to start at the reservoir with a cleaning or replacement. No warning lights of any kind and fan does come on. Any other suggestions welcome.
@LoudBarkDesigns
@LoudBarkDesigns 8 жыл бұрын
I believe its a blocked heater core.which it is causing the overflow side to collect more and spit out that hole in the back as in this video. I had a small vapor leak in my original heater core so I had the heater core replaced 2 months ago at a shop and I told them to flush the system because I new I used a stop leak product for a couple months. They new this, . I have a feeling the system was not flushed adequately which cased a block in the new core. It's speculation right now.

I got a positioning sensor failure was about to replace it then my car started running hot. The engine wasn't dying or missing at acceleration like you would expect with the sensor out. It maybe that my fan is out and that's why it ran hot. Is that what you experienced? The error you get for positioning sensor is really the fan? Any feedback would be helpful.

Mine’s a radiator with a hairline crack in the drivers side plastic tank. Can’t complain, 19 years old!

I also found crack in radiator. Replaced radiator & never had another over heating problem. There was more than one problem. Two speed radiator fan only ran at one speed. Tiny crack on the side near the top of the radiator leak doubt a little bit of water which helped cause it overheat. Gasket on radiator cap shot, not ceiling correctly. To recap, fan motor replaced, radiator replaced, radiator cap replaced and my overheating problem was fixed. I also replaced the fan relay switch, temperature sensor and the thermostat.

Great vid, but my fan is not working, no check engine light n I'm pretty sure the motor is fine.

Connect it directly to the battery. It should run at fast speed. It is a 2 speed fan. My fan did not work on both speeds. It definitely need replacing, but the radiator was ultimately the reason for overheating. Tiny crack towards top on the side. Once I replaced it there was no more overheating. There is a good video on KZfaq that shows how to replace radiator. It can be separated from the condensing coil, so it is possible to do at home.

Sorry to be the exception, but here we are. No codes, no dash lights; replaced the fan motor-still doesn't work.
