This 2003 Jeep Liberty was a break down and drove in during a normal busy work day. Customer complaint was simply , overheating. I looked at it verified the problem and confirmed the fix. Enjoy!
How do you test for a blown headgasket you ask? Well I did a video on that too: • Test For A Blown Head ...

Labor rate: $75 an hour $100 an hour if he watches $150 an hour if he helps $200 an hour if he tried to repair it and failed. All labor rates double if owner is a lawyer.

I heard A&P tell something similar to that Toba customer asking about an "owner assisted" annual inspection. Told him like $100/hr labor or $200 if the owner assisted. His logic was that having the helper he'd have to watch him like a hawk and be slowed down by his questions and general ignorance of aircraft maintenance.

Good morning Eric, I have to give credit to Jeep for designing easy access to components including alternator, compressor and water pump. Since this vehicle is rear drive, other major components repair also easily accessible. As a kid growing up in the 60-70s, many of us were able to fix our own cars because they were rear wheel drive. Granted, pre-emissions, also added more maintenance, including spark plus every 15k, point , condenser , fuel filter, etc. Thank you for taking the time to produce your videos.

r aeronca - yes, I thought so at first. The Jiffy Lube near where I live has one of those hose-activated bells. It wasn’t until I saw him fiddling around with it at the same time the “bell” was ringing, that it was the water pump housing doing the ringing (or maybe the pulley?) 🤗

As soon as the guy started talking I could actually tell he wasn't a real person. It would be fun to have him watch while you do one of those no start-no-crank-no-codes-no-gas-full-aftermarket-total-rust-fiascos. Add a lawyer to that mix, Eric, and you wouldn't need that magnetic induction heater, rather you could heat bolts using spontaneous human combustion.

It's unbelievable nowadays the engine parts that companies make out of plastic. Plastic for God's sake! I watched a video from donnyboy73 the small engine doctor. He pulled apart a brand-name snow blower that had a stripped plastic gear in the engine! That puts a whole new spin on the saying "they sure don't make them like they used to".

@Bobby Brady Anything installed in aircraft, plastic or otherwise has to undergo a rigid certification process and have the FAA's seal of approval before it can (legally) be used. However when it comes to vehicles and other consumer products, manufacturers can use the absolute cheapest garbage plastic and get away with it. Therein lies the difference!
@maverickdallas1004
@maverickdallas1004 5 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady Having the components of the water pump splined together rather than just a simple press-fit, would have certainly prevented the problem happening in the first place. Modern plastics do indeed have great potentential and can be amazingly strong in addition to lasting forever. However, the bean-counters are still going to opt for the cheapest of them that's just adequate enough to last a little while.

Worst plastic water pump story I ever had: 3.5L Intrepid. Car overheated when idling, No issues when driving at speed. I even drove the car 2 hours on the freeway home. Had a brand new water pump, I went through everything on diagnosing the thing. Finally pulled the heads and found the plastic water pump impeller parts (the old one) plugging up the coolant flow entering the drivers side head. Flushed the block out for like an hour with the heads off and was good to go.

My in-laws 2005 Jeep has an overheating problem, changed out almost the entire cooling system, along with a new fan. The new fan worked for 10 minutes and stopped. We threw in the hat at that time (well they did, I am stuck in Afghanistan) so I asked them to take into a shop so they could stop throwing parts at it. Shop says its the fan, charges them over 350 (part and labor). Two days later, the Liberty is still over heating! Now the shop has the Jeep again and will be checking the cooling system for a blockage somewhere. Initially when my in-laws borrowed the Jeep to a gal from church it was fine, no issues, then the fan went out, and the gal ran it hot, but she never told them how long so the last thing I am thinking is bad head gaskets but I thought for sure it would be leaking coolant someplace, talk about frustrating! Great video by the way and finally some break cleaner!

Generally I don't like distraction while working on anything, especially cars. There was an old mechanic that could not physically do his own car repair so I did the repairs for him. He would sit on a stool in my shop and watch without saying much, but when I was having a problem he would casually suggest I might try doing this or that. I learned a lot from that old mechanic and enjoyed his company besides.

Not that the metal housing part is a casting .... LOL .... the only posible explanations is that is made on purpose ... I wouldnt buy any product from them. Same as Samsung placing caps CLOSE to the heatsinks to dry them quickly. You CANT tell that this was a mistake. Not for a manufacturer of this level.

Another thumbs up video! Regarding brake cleaners, I have found that the Wearever is more than twice as effective as CRC. Learned this from a brake job last weekend. Was cleaning brand new Mopar OEM rear rotors with CRC and went through a whole can and did not fully clean off one side of one new rotor. Pulled a can of Wearever and one quarter of a can cleaned that first rotor AND the second new rotor. CRC brake cleaner never again.

How did you check for blown head gasket ? Why are manufacturers so enamored in placing polymer parts in vital areas of an engine ? Plastic by its nature is going to stretch and weaken after time and the strength is not fantastic.Coupling metal and plastic is another area of concern especially over an extended temperature range.Fast diagnosis and fast repair.

Gotta build failure points in there somewhere in areas that require several hours of labor just to get to the part that is broke. If the engineers had to actually work on the nightmares that them and the designers and accountant's blessed off on they'd really change the way things are built. I believe the designers, engineers, and accountants should be required to have hands on shop time on their nightmare's before they are put into production.

Seriously when the pump fails like that most people would be up for a new engine, or a full rebuild, luckily for this Jeep it had an attentive driver at the wheel. How much money would Jeep even save on using plastic impeller, $1, $2?

My issue is I am the tech that fixes my own vehicles, but there is an annual "safety" inspection in the state where I currently live... The dumb part is they are done by private shops not state run facilities that exclusively do that... Shops that have an incentive to sell you something, so yes I watch them like a hawk because finding an honest one is near impossible.

Man oh man, seeing that overheating Liberty immediately brings me to my Jeep I've got to get fixed. -- It's sitting at my sister's place. It's the Via Motori diesel version. Love it, but it's got it's quirks. It overheated on the freeway and melted a piston and cracked a bit between and intake and exhaust on the head. Since I got it all apart, I'm going to delete the EGR and upgrade the plugs...just have to wait for a few more parts to come in. Thanks to you guys @southmainauto, I was able to get a Suby on the cheap to get me through the winter. -- I did the head gasket with your videos' help. Honestly, I really appreciate what you're doing, and next time I'm in the Rochester area visiting my brother, maybe I could come by and say hi.
