Died suddenly on the road. Flashing m and s lights

Interior fuse box. Had the same on my NAS 2000 D2. Initially thought it was the CKPS but had only changed it two years before. This drove my nuts for a week or so. Had a job sourcing an second hand interior fuse box and away it went. Old fuse box showed no signs of damage or water intrusion.

My Symptoms: M and S lights are flashing. The car does start, but sometimes it has trouble getting into gear. When it does get into gear, it does not shift out of 3rd. Fix that worked for me: After reading some of the comments here, I attached a portable jumper to the battery, turned it on and started the car. The flashing M and S lights went away, car immediately shifts into Drive and Reverse and when brought up to highway speeds, it shifts normally. I have an old battery and having the extra juice connected to it at startup took care of my issue. I would've looked at the gear box electric sensor if this would not have solved it.

put the gear selector in park.... remove the keys and select the car locking button on your key to activate the immobilizer (red flashing light on dash) then unlock the immobilizer as if you were getting into the car... put keys in ignition and start the engine. the two green flashing transmission light will have gone and also the flashing light on the gear selector will be solid again when selected... this fault happens as a safety trip if you try to start the car with the gear selector in the drive position...problem solved until you accidentally do it again like i do quite often lol

That happened to me once and it was because the negative plug to the battery slipped off lol. I was like ah damn another thing I gatta fix. But I plugged it back on the battery and worked fine

My Discover 2 V8 hazard lights coming on automatically and won’t go off unless battery is disconnected. Engine won’t while hazards are flashing. What could be the problem.

Hi My Disco 2 V8. All of the sudden started Blinking the M and S green lights and there is a considerable loss of power. Can you help? Please

M and S is a transmission fault. The loss of power is caused by the transmission in limp mode. I’ve seen it caused by low voltage caused by a bad battery. Try charging the battery, disconnecting it from the truck, leaving it for 20mins or so, then reconnecting. This will clear the transmission codes. If it doesn’t you are going to have to get the transmission codes read by a Land Rover mechanic, and they should be able to direct you from there.

Thanks a lot. I will try to sort it out Tonigh. Staring by remove the battery for several minutes and then by charging the battery all the night long. I will come back to you by tomorrow with a feedback wether it has positive results or not. Thanks a lot again for your instructions. Cheers

I placed a new battery but the problem continues. Took it to a Friend to read the errors and erase. Drove roughly 1 km and the lights came on again.

Removed gearbox an transfer oils. Were black. Put new oil and running well but sometimes lights come and go.

First time it happens to me it was fixed by replacing xyz switch Second time it just needed a battery replace (the battery had a history of running out of juice, something to do with voltage) Good luck !

I had similar issue with a td5 recently took the black connector to the ecu off and sprayed it with contact cleaner and it started right up. Wasn’t sending the power to the fuel pump relay.

It turned out to be an issue with the connection to the ECUs under the dash. I unplugged them and plugged them in again and it started working normally. On yours, I’d try replacing the crank sensor. Do you have the flashing M and S as well?

M+S lights flashing too. I've replaced the crank sensor and its still doing the same. The worst part of it is that it works and then it doesnt so its tough to diagnose. I'll try playing with the ECU's under the dash. you got any pics of them? Mine is a right hand driv. Many thanks for getting back to me!

mine is doing the same the only thing different is that my d2 is runing sometimes the m and s lights are flashing than i turn it off and turn it on and it doesnt do it anymore ..

Flashing m & s means gearbox fault. Is your battery staying charged? It can sometimes be caused by low voltage. If it's not voltage, I would have the fault code read by someone with a Land Rover specific scanner (not just a generic OBDII). That would tell you where to go from there.

Turned out to be a dodgy connection the ECM.

+Tyler Mobraten What should I be looking for, what do you mean by a dodgy connection? I have replaced every possible culprit for my M+S problem, nothing worked, so I'm starting to believe it is a connection somewhere EMC related, someone also suggested to check the wiring harness, I'm not an expert. Any help is appreciated.

The ECM is behind the passengers side kick plate (black panel under glovebox). It is held against the side of the truck with plastic nuts (10mm IIRC). I would unplug it and inspect the plug and the module for corrosion. You could clean up the contacts with a wire brush and some electrical contact cleaner. I would also do the same with the BCU and the TCM. The TCM is located under the drivers seat, beneath the amplifier for the speakers. I'm not sure where the BCU is. I would also look into your fuseboxes. Sometimes the solder cracks in them due to age, and causes strange issues. You could pull a fuseboxes from a wreck and try changing them just to be sure.

After resetting the M+S for few days in a row, eventually it starts behaving in exactly the same way you car did in the video (will not start), if I unplug the crankshaft position sensor, and plug it back in, the symptoms disappear for one whole week and then M+S eventually start flashing …. Until it won’t start, if I unplug the crankshaft position sensor again, and plug it back in, it goes fine for another week, and so on....

I would take a good hard look at the neutral safety switch. (Also called the WXYZ switch). It doesn't sound like the same issue as this truck, because when the ECM lost connection, nothing would work, and diagnostic tools wouldn't connect. Your issue could also be a bad fusebox. M and S means a transmission fault, so I would put my money on the WXYZ switch.

Sounds like immobiliser needs bypassing can buy part to do it and plug it straight in , or dabble with wire to bypass it either way bummer of a job but once radio ect out piece of cake
