Our full tour and review of this 2004 Lexus LS 430 Ultra Luxury goes in-depth on one of the most reliable luxury daily drivers money can buy today. This 15 year old example is incredibly well maintained and comes as fully loaded as it gets for a third gen Lexus LS. We go over everything you need to know about this vehicle if you're in the market to buy one.
On our exterior walkaround of the 2004 LS 430 we go over the adaptive bi-Xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, soft-close doors and trunk, automatic power-folding mirrors, Lexus SmartAccess keyless entry system, and the automatic up/down windows, radar-based adaptive cruise control, and the first Lexus Pre-Collision system. This is one of only two black on black LS 430s sold in Canada in 2004, making this one prime example to feature on TestDrive.
Inside we go over all the tech found on this vehicle. Features like full leather seating with heat and ventilation for the front, along with heat, ventilation, and massage in the back. Other features like dual-zone automatic climate control with air purifier, Mark Levinson premium audio system, Lexus on-board navigation, backup camera, power tilt steering wheel with memory, oscillating air vents, alcantara headliner, power sunroof, rear sun shades, power reclining rear seats, and much more.
We spend some time in the rear seats also and talk about features found on the Ultra Luxury trim, including the rear cooling fridge and centre console armrest controls.
We then take the 2004 Lexus LS430 on a comprehensive road test to talk about how this vehicle performs and drives compared to modern vehicles, and how it stacks up against the competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW back in the early 2000s. We do a quick 0-60 km test, and talk about the overall handling and steering response, along with the performance out of the 290 horsepower V8 engine.
We also get driven around in the back seat area of the Lexus LS 430 to see how an executive from the 2000s would have felt back in the day.
We wrap up our full tour and review of the 2004 Lexus LS430 Ultra Luxury with a buyer's guide, including the common problems with this generation of full-size luxury sedan from the Japanese automaker, including some of the small issues with the specific vehicle we're featuring.

I lost my dad this year and he purchased this vehicle in 2016. After dad passed, I drove it the 1100 miles home and was shocked at how smooth it was as well as the dependability and gas mileage. I have been taking good care of it with regular washing and detailing. When I drive it, it is an absolute pleasure. Best car I have ever driven. The power and sport modes combined are just so smooth. This vehicle truly has a get up and go way about it. Dad knew cars and he sure chose a great one. If you ever have the ability to test this one out and purchase, I highly recommend.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It sounds like your father had great taste in cars at least! I was very impressed with this car when I drove it, there's one (only one) for sale in Quebec right now but it isn't the Ultra Luxury trim. I'm tempted to take a look at it.

By now, a 15 year old S-Class or 7-Series would be relegated to the salvage yard, after becoming a colossal money pit for its' last 3 owners and having virtually no resale value. Lexus are almost timeless and their reliability, longevity & resale value reflect it.

My deceased father bought this same 2004 model 2nd hand in 2006 from the Lexus Dealership for $45k AUD, the original RRP in 2004 was $178k AUD. Crazy depreciation huh? But a bargain for us. $45k wouldn't have even got us a current 2006 IS200 at that dealership so getting an 'as new' LS430 Flagship with 35k KM's on it for that price felt like the bargain of the century. The LS430 is impeccable, the craftsmanship, thoughtfulness of the design, quality of materials, production and finishing. The brilliance of the platform and the surprising amount of power makes this a very special car. Whether on the highway, twisty coastal roads or dirt roads it handles them all magnificently whilst keeping you insulated from it all in that supremely luxurious cabin. It's immense. In the 15 years of ownership I've never had a single part failure, only ever had to spend money on parts that naturally wear over the life of the car. When you consider the literal HUNDREDS of motors, dozens of computers & circuit boards and buttons/switches, 1000's of wires measuring over a mile in length, powering all of these sophisticated luxurious amenities then that feat of design & engineering becomes all the more impressive. It's one thing for a basic Corolla to be reliable, it's a WHOLE other thing for a fully optioned LS to be reliable. Clearly Lexus dedicates a significant part of their R&D Budget to ensuring everything they implement is focused towards reliability and longevity. (Edit, it's 2022 now and everything I wrote is still true, still haven't had any part failures in the 2 and a bit years since I wrote this comment. It's just extraordinary this car.)

@@swatisquantum I have one too. The mufflers rotted out on me so I put straight pipes after the resonators. I strongly recommend this approach, especially if you're feeling cheap. It's still whisper quiet. It sounds a bit meatier when idling but there's no droning in the cabin, you can actually hear the exhaust note when you push the pedal but it goes dead silent when cruising at moderately high speeds, and it still sounds great when you slam it. I haven't tried it on a very, very high-speed cruise yet though, but at regular highway speeds it's just a straight-up improvement, best of both worlds. A very happy "accident" considering I just did it because the mufflers for this car are wicked expensive.

I've had the same '98 LS400 for 21 years and it has been a marvel of reliability, a joy to own. Strangers still approach me to ask whether it might be for sale. If possible, I'd advise avoiding the dealers for "service". I always change the oil and filter myself (conventional at 4-5K). I've had German "luxury" brands in the past and they are utter junk by comparison. Reliability is the hallmark of high quality engineering, design and construction. The Germans lack all of those. The exception might be MB's body construction. And they do handle well when everything's actually working and they are out of the repair shop. I once borrowed a friend's then new Bentley Continental and was happy to get back into my own car!

The Germans did do very well with their cars. But sadly the culture and big corporatism has changed all the great German cars. I buy Lexus myself and I'm German. But Lexus here is better than the new Lexus.

You are absolutely right. Bought a used LS400 at 96K. Utterly reliable and enjoyable car. Tried a MB 2000 E43O 4Matic, first V8 sedan all wheel drive from Benz. Heavily optioned, Brand new order just for me. A beautiful car. $15,000 warranty works first year. Sold 70,000 K. It was a total lemon. I never will own a Mercedes again. BMW also disastrous, serving all the time. Stranded, Towed out of your driveway, smoking on the side of the road. Branding desire until you own one. Audi also same disaster. We’ve had five Lexus now. I have my 2001 LS 430 ultra luxury package white interior, midnight jade green exterior with Erica, the gray burled walnut look. 20 years old running beautifully. Picked up at 2010 LS 460, L AWD ultra premium luxury package, TV between the rear seats on the centre armrest, and unusual package instead of the executive package which loses the third middle seat in the rear. I don’t desire a new Lexus. Not a Lexus LS 460 or 500. I have adjusted to the spindle grille in your face statement. Ya, they look cool. But the interior seems hoaxy. Trying to hard the make a statement. Interestingly, the new phantom, + Rolls-Royce ghost are Deemphasizing ostentatious adornments and simplifying the interior design. I guess it’s sort of like juxtaposed baroque to art deco. Lol

@@MrMrremmington Had MB for 20 yrs (company bought them for me). They were markedly inferior to the Lexus LS400. Friends had a new BMW 740...left them stranded many times. I looked at the LS500 and was unimpressed. RR has lost its way in styling and then the tech will always be highly questionable. Friends/neighbors had never been able to keep theirs on the road. Friend bought a new Bentley Continental. It arrived with factory defects and was very frequently in the shop. He got rid of it after a year or so. He, too, switched to an LS. I've had my '98 LS400 for almost 24 yrs. and it has been superb is all respects. If I buy another car, it will be an EV.

I have a 2004 Lexus SC430 with 53K on the clock. It has the same engine as the LS in your video. Plenty of performance and built to last as long as you do the routine maintenance they'll last a very, very long time. As you said, "they are bulletproof." The build quality in older Lexus cars are incredible and they are beautiful inside and out. I have 3 cars: a Tacoma, Miata, and the SC430. But, I've been rubbernecking the 3rd generation LS for a while now. Maybe this year. Good review!

Chrystal clear headlights, gorgeous sparkling Champaign paint, no curb rash in the chrome rims etc. AND, it has over 207,000 MILES on it! It’s mechanically perfect, and drives like it’s brand new. @@VMAdventures88 I don't safety has really changed that much in the last 10 or 20 years where it would correlate to features offered on any automobiles. They should offer more because we progress as a society. As for reliability, that should be the number one factor in choosing an automobile or perhaps number 2 after whether you can afford it. With Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Acura as benchmarks for reliability, yet still losing ground in the category, it demonstrates what happens with nearly all new technology. It just takes a few years to work out the kinks. Unless your GM or VW, you just wait for class action lawsuits.

After the LS430, Lexus started to cheapen out on the quality and even worse decided to step away from pure luxury and lean more sporty now. I owned a 1996 LS400 before this, and while I loved that car too, the LS430 is a major step up because they managed to retain most if not all of the best features of the LS400 while bringing in tons of new tech.

@@Matt-cw1mv Nope, none. Not worth it at all. All it does is make your voice sound funny. The best features on the car are: 1) Engine, simply perfection, smooth, powerful, quiet and most of all bulletproof reliable. 2) Seats - supremely comfortable and of the highest quality and buttery smooth leather. 3) Tomb like silence interior. It gets eerily quiet cruising on a nicely paved road. 4) Soft touch closing doors. I love coming home late at night and just lightly tap the door close and let it pull itself shut without waking the family. 5) Headlights - they are super bright, even with the cloudy oxidation forming on it. I'll get those restored soon. 6) Fit and finish - My 13 year old lexus fit and finish is still top notch. All the draws and cubbies open up with soft quiet and fluid like movement. I recently sat in a 3 year old Porsche Panamera, and everything I touched creaked and felt really cheap to the touch.

PRN_TestDrive Actually, I wasn't expecting a response from you so it was really nice to hear back from you. I have a Ls 430 "Pack Président" which is the only model sold in France at the time. The model names change from country To country but it is the UL version. Mine is from November 2003, a 2004 model totally Not in mint condition. I had OEM air struts fitted recently because the original ones were worn out. A lot of other work needs To be done as Well. But with tires very Well inflated, that Lexus air suspension is excellent. And with 245 Michelin cross climate tires the car manages To achieve, in combined city and highway driving, 10 litres of 98 gasoline for 100 km. The interior is tan and the car is dark blue, as black is Not a colour in vogue in Spain. Extremely quiet too until you put the ECT in "power" and get over 6k RPM. The torque is impressive.

Just bought a 2003 LS430 with 84k on it a few weeks ago here in Michigan. Timing belt seems to be the key maintenance item to perform. Lexus says at 90k but now that they are older might be a good idea just to handle it ASAP. Hood and trunk struts generally fail but are simple fixes. Awesome video as usual.

Yes. Consider replacing the water pump at the same time (though I didn't), tensioner and all pulleys with OEM parts. The struts are 5' jobs to replace. I got mine on Ebay. Check your air filter and cabin filter, too. Easy to replace. Plugs will likely last 200K. Change conventional oil at about 5K and synthetic at 7-7.5K. DO NOT substitute coolants. Don't flush transmission.

@@PRNTestDrive comparing these 2 in non UL format which one is a better car? I also posted this question on a different thread. I’m looking to get into either a 2007-09 ES350 or a 2004 LS430 with About 80-95k miles. Their both posted for sale for about $8500 to $10,000 I won’t be using this as a daily driver and I put about 6 to 7000 miles per year on average Obviously these are in 2 different size categories and have different size engines. Guess it comes down to practically and size preference. I currently own a 2013 ES350 with only 42,500 miles which i recently listed for sale. Love it but looking to lower my payment.

I have been driving a 2004 Lexus LS 430 medium luxury package for nearly six years. Bought it when it had about 80,000 km, and it now has closer to 240,000 km. This vehicle is so graceful and drama free. LS 400 was a legendary vehicle, but Lexus perfected this vehicle in the model years 2004-2006. They have only gone downhill since then. The 2013-2017 models were much better than the 2007-2012 models. The new LS 500 is still TBD. I wish Benz or Lexus would bring back the old boxy designs. They are so cool and timeless.

That's impressive! Can't beat the reliability on this generation, that's for sure. I'm surprised that Lexus and now Toyota's design language has gotten aggressive, but I've read interviews with their upper management and understand where they're coming from now. They seem to feel it's the only way to attract younger buyers that will help grow the brands.

@@PRNTestDrive I was 31 when I bought the LS430, so Lexus management is high on something because they are losing their loyal fans. If I ever plan on upgrading my LS, it will probably be a newer S550. Liking a classy design has nothing to do to age. You can 20 and appreciate classy things. How many so called young people can afford a brand new LS500? Not many.
