I had exactly this car about ten years ago. 100% agree on the peculiar French layouts, friends Peugeot was no better. The water pump location is absolutely typical. I also wonder if a Mirage is equally awkward to service!

As I understand it the variator uses centrifugal weights to change timing. Main reason to replace an old one is with mileage they weight parts begin to rattle so the engine sounds like a diesel on idle.

I don't believe they take the engine out, they just loosen the mounts and move the engine over as far as possible. K Tec do a full belts / dephaser and water pump change for under £700 I believe. At least I hope they do because I'm on 134K last done 80k.

Hey the engine is facing the wrong way... Go to Maccas get two plastic trays, put them under the rear wheels, put handbrake on and do some donuts for us Super Cap 😝 Do you ride motorbikes, if so if you ever come down under we can stick you on one of our race bikes 😬 Ps: They are called E-Torx sockets. Also Bolt torque is to get to snug point (correct tension) . Then the angle to to give the bolt the correct stretch.

12:38 Most of the time if a "part" is required to be placed in an exact angle after being torqued. It is connected or joined in someway to other components inside the engine. If the angle is off to much the internal components may smash into other moving components and cause permeant damage. This is one of the more severe possibilities that can happen in a few engines. Another is the fuel to air mixture isn't "timed" correctly. Engine chambers don't seal fully before the fuel is ignited. Which leads to less power output of the engine. The general idea is, if it's attached to the timing belt or chain, something inside the motor is planned to move at precise timed intervals. And others engine components are just planned to rotate constantly like a water pump. Google: engine rockers. a few pictures should fill in the gaps as to how full mechanical engines work.

Dont worry about the seals on a Renault, probably not your fault. Common issue even on newer Renault meganes and trafics to have leaky seals or dodgy sensors (especially MAF sensors or on diesels, anti-pollution sensors). Can't get along with french vehicles, had more luck with british built fords.
