2005-2009 Subaru Key Fob Broken Lock Button Fix

My 3rd Gen Subaru Outback Keyfob stopped locking the car. Turns out this is usually due failed solder joints which attach the microswitch in the fob to the printed circuit board. The switch is small but it's about a 5 minute job to solder back on.

Thank you for this! It was exactly what I needed to fix my fob. The first time I attempted it the switch sat too high off of the board and the button was constantly pressed, triggering the panic alarm as soon as I closed the case. I heated the solder joints again while applying some pressure to the switch with a Helping Hand and it worked perfectly. Thanks again!

thank you kind sir. you just saved me $400 bucks. after years of no lock button i was just about to give in and get a new fob. i fixed it in 30 mins. first time button was too high when i soldered it back on. had to really push down as i soldered one more time. now it works like a charm!

I had this exact problem the first time I attempted the fix and it triggered the panic alarm in my garage, that was fun. 😅

Thanks for this. Spare key fob's lock button doesn't work, and then the main's lock button failed recently. Before I had my Subaru, I used to carry around two sets of keys all the time so I couldn't get locked out (happened once, never again... until recently.) Since my lock button stopped working, I locked it with the button on the car door, and guess what, locked my keys in my car this past weekend. Time to get out the soldering gun.

Thanks! Given how many of this generation of Outback I see here in the PNW (it's basically the unofficial car of Washington and Oregon) and how usually the same things break on cars once they get older (e.g., find a 2000-ish Toyota Sienna with a working driver side sliding door lock and I'll give you a prize) I would think it should have more than 180 views :)

Any idea where to buy a new button? I just bought an old Subaru and upon opening the fob I see no button inside the case and it was clearly sheared off the pcb in the past.
