Hernandez came into the majors in 98 at the age of 32. Dominate pitcher for the Yankees in the postseason. Red Sox couldn’t hit off him in the 1999 postseason winning alcs mvp. He’s a legend in my book

His performance was EPIC. Goes unnoticed by many because it was the White Sox (Not the Yankees) and it was the Divisional round. He put a stop to the defending 2004 Champs. One of the greatest moments in White Sox history. His performance needs to be added to my kids US/World History text books.

I remember being at a bar for this and when Marte was loading the bases I was SO excited that El Duque was warming in the bullpen. I KNEW that for that kind of circumstance he was the absolute perfect pitcher to handle it. They needed someone with real guile, being able to handle the pressure of that moment, and having “something extra” in their arsenal. Quite likely the most important relief appearance in franchise history.

Ozzie gets a lot of credit here. He went with El Duque over Brandon McCarthy, who was one of the hottest pitchers for the White sox the second half of the season. El Duque comes through in the clutch and helps us win the world series. Everything went our way that year.

@@74SD455TA AJ was considered a "jerk" by almost all other teams players, but almost everyone on the team he played on knew he would give 110%, and, was most likely the smartest player on the field. He would call pitches for almost every batter, and he rarely got shaken off, Buherle just took what he called, and threw it, and pitched some of the quickest games in MLB for years, and with one no-hitter with AJ calling as well. His only weakness was he had "slow mechanics" to throw a base stealer out, so that came into play as he got older, but until then he was one player the White Sox fans embraced while he was here.

The conversation in the clubhouse after the game between El Duque and Cooper went something like this where El Duque said........Coop, you can bring me in anytime with no outs and 1 man on base and you can bring me in with 2 men on and nobody out BUT DON'T EVER bring me back in with the bases loaded and nobody out............What a joy to watch, never gets old. Varitek, Graffanino, Damon......still haunted by the GREAT EL DUQUE!

This, is the MOST exciting and suspenesul 1/2 inning of baseball I have ever seen. I remember being at a local bar after work with co-workers watching it, and it was amazing to see Ozzie pick "El Duque" to go against 3 tough batters of the BoSox lineup (0 outs and bases loaded), which, were all probably juicing, and mow them down! Ozzie probably had a feeling that since he faced them when he was a Yankee, he would have the best idea of how to get them out, and he did it well. AJ called them, Orlando threw them, and 1-2-3 "He Gone!"

The White Sox had good enough fielders where, as long as it wasn't a solid hit, most times it was going to be fielded for an out. Buherle got a lot of wins that way, he "pitched to contact" but rarely gave the batter something to put into the stands. EL Duque took a page out of that book and mowed the BoSox down with it.
