My balljoint completely failed on a mountain pass, after lots of damage and an expensive tow this video was a life saver! Didnt have time to wait 6 weeks for the shop. Awesome video, and nice hat!

Fantastic how-to! I'm about to do an '06 Dakota myself and this was perfect. Thanks for the tip on that grease channel position and needing the bigger kit too.

Best self-help video I've ever seen. Wish I'dve seen it before I did my job. I used wrong press kit and fought all day to get mine out on a 2005 Durango. Wasn't fun.Well done, sir.Now please go buy a 2005 Durango, 2006 Tacoma, 2009 intrepid and make help videos for all their major jobs.Thank you,

+maqui 4240 Thank you for the compliment! Compared to a lot of the more professional KZfaqr's out there I still feel that I'm a bit of a novice. In the seemingly near future I hope to do a bit of an upgrade when it comes to my video editing etc., but I'm sure you would agree what it boils down to is the content itself. Trying to work on that too. I have found a lot of good information and videos through the 1-A Auto channel, but overall what I see in videos that bug me sometimes is not knowing what socket/wrench sizes to use or if they are doing an intricate part of the job I can't see exactly what they are doing. Regardless I'm glad you liked it and I'll do what I can on future videos lol

Thanks Larry! After watching a number of videos myself, I try to think about the parts always fast forward past etc. and try to incorporate that in mine.

I just want to thank you for this video. You saved my life. My 07 wasn't even rusty but it was pure hell. Without this vid I would still have a broke down Dakota in my driveway. Note. I had to detach the strut and stabilizer link on my 4wd to be able to jack up enough for room for install tool.

Marc Kenyon Marc Kenyon you're very welcome! When making the video, I debated to include disassembling the brakes, rotors, knuckle, etc... but figured, not only that there are other videos doing that part, anyone that's gonna do their ball joints would have the know how to get to that point. You're absolutely correct! As you can see in video, I had removed pretty much all of the other suspension components. Though it may not have been completely necessary, it did make the job easier. Plus, I think at the time, I was also replacing my upper control arm, brakes/rotors, and wheel hubs. (I did a video on the PITA job of getting a hub out of the knuckle). Important to note: Any parts you get from Autozone/Advance/Etc. ... !!! Keep digital copies of your receipts!!! I cannot stress this enough. I replaced many parts with Moog etc that had lifetime warranties, and the stores all said "we keep a record of your warranties", which is true*, but I came to find out that after a few years they delete records to save space. So, after endless searching of bank statements I thankfully found a purchase from advance that was exactly the price of 2 upper control arms and they were nice enough to take my word and do the warranty swap. So keep a digital/photo copy of your receipts PLUS email yourself a copy of the receipts, so when u get a new phone etc, you'll still have a searchable copy in your email files. I want to thank you as well... being able to help others like yourself, is the whole reason I started my little channel. I'm grateful if it has helped anyone in any small way.

Do you happen to know how wide the sleeve was that you used to install the ball joint?
@DIYDomTheBuilder4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it was so long ago I have no idea. What I can say, is that I had to go back to advance auto and swap the standard ball joint kit that I borrowed for their master ball joint service kit, because the standard one didn't have sleeves that would fit.

does this apply to the 06 model as well in 4x4
@DIYDomTheBuilder4 жыл бұрын
As far as model years go, it’s the same for at least 05-07; in regards to 4x4, I’m not certain it’s exactly the same. If you look up the LBJ online and you get the exact same part # for both RWD & 4x4, I would assume that, yes it would apply. The only main difference I would guess, is when disassembling the knuckle d/t having the front cv shafts connected to the hub assembly. But if you’re already familiar with taking that apart, I don’t think you’d have too much trouble with the rest. Hope that helps answer your question. If not, let me know and I can see what I can do to help.

Do you have to take the brake caliper, rotor and hub off to do this job?
@DIYDomTheBuilder2 жыл бұрын
You might be able to get away with just holding them off to the side, but it’s probably a lot easier just to remove them, so they are out of the way. Granted, if you might be able to remove the knuckle from the upper & lower control arm with all the brake components still in place. The main things that need to be separated are the upper control arm, outer tie rod end, and lower ball joint (obviously)… the brake line would also have to be disconnected, unless you were able to suspend or support the entire knuckle in a way that doesn’t put any stress on the brake line itself.

Here is a great video that shows how to use a Ball Joint Service Kit: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZ1-mq9-mdqtqqs.html

the issue with Dodge ball joints is not how to do it, it's where to get MADE IN USA replacement joints to put in, that will last 100,000 miles or more. these shit made in Taiwan, China, India parts are JUNK and wear out in 30,000 miles or less. having a grease fitting is only good if you grease the front end every 3 months. a sealed ball joint will actually hold the grease better, while a grease-able one will leak grease out of the boot, because it's not sealed as well. the original ball joints in my '01 Chevy are sealed oem GM and have 220,000 miles on them. because they were HIGH QUALITY to begin with, and SEALED. changing them is a no brainer, where do we get the rare, scarce, USA-made replacement ball joints ?
@DIYDomTheBuilder6 жыл бұрын
tunnelportterror good question. I have no idea; and you’re right, changing them out is a no brainer. I agree, it would be awesome to have a set that lasts 100K miles or more... until then, I’m just glad I can get these replaced for free.
