Thank you for the video. Showing how you undid clips, not just pointing at a clip and saying, "Undo this clip" made your video so much better. Thank you for including wrench sizes and showing you actually doing all the steps. After using your video to help me change a starter, I appreciate the filming of all the little details even more, there is not much room in there for hands and wrenches, but you got a light an camera in there too.

I used a 3/8s ratchet with a socket and extension, it worked good for me, the longer the ratchet the more leverage u get to loosen it, i never had to use an impact for it.

Nicely done. As a former mechanic of approx 20 years, nothing here I couldn't have figured out, but the clarity of both your vid and narration will undoubtedly save me considerable time when I replace the starter in my daughter's '08 Civic in the morning. Thanks.

Thanks brother, you saved me a couple of hundred bucks. I will say to anyone thinking of doing this. You will struggle if not using the flex head ratchet to remove the top long bolt. I had to use many extensions and it’s a pain. If you have the money go out and buy one. Also I highly, highly recommend you use a thick pillow if using a creeper under the car otherwise your neck won’t be able to support your head the next day. And please please use multiple jack stands under the car and make sure you are on level ground. Be safe and have a good day.

The starter in my Civic went out a few days ago while I wasn't home. Got a few friends to push my car and pop the clutch to drive it lol. Thought, its just a starter how hard can it be. Man I was wrong. This was such a pain in the ass. It took about two hours to replace a freakin starter. The one in my '85 Corvette comes out with three accessible bolts and the one in my dad's F350 comes out with 3 as well also easy to get access. Honda finds to worst possible places for things. This video really helped man!

some tips that made it easier. there’s a small wiring harness electrical plug all the way in the back near the manifold un clip that and the whole harness will come out loose. do not remove the little black circle cap on top of the starter. only remove the black boot to unplug. it threw off the way the wiring harness lines up. it was easier to lineup the long bolt first then line up the smaller one.

My son just called and it was the starter which was replaced. I told him that my review of your video and several others indicated that this was a difficult job due to poor accessibility. $300 for starter and $240 labor in Canadian $$ which is approximately $380 US. Thanks again.

It took me about 8 hours to do this job. Access was the issue - there is no space to work in. The bolts were difficult to break loose and problematic to get to. Removing the exhaust pipe is not necessary - the starter can be removed to the side. The higher the vehicle can be lifted, the better. That was an issue too, as my hydralic equipment is limited. Having done it once, the next time probably would be faster. Your video helped.

I just done mine and it took me about 6 hrs. I could not get the top bolt back in. Finally took the starter out, put the top bolt in the hole then put the starter back in. Like you said the higher the better. Probably wouldn't be bad job on a lift but when working off jackstands it's really aggravating. I hope I NEVER do another one.

None of the following need to be removed to replace the starter. the Manifold, exhaust, axles, and wheel can be left alone. It's much easier as a technician with a full car lift, but start by removing the metal bracket connected to the manifold. Two 10mm and on 12 mm bolt, then begin removing the two 8mm bolts off the bushing/motor cover (also retaining the harness) then you will have access to the two starter retaining bolts, and the power wire, with the communication connector. Its a pain in the ass but with the right tools and experience this is an hour job, book time calls for an hour and a half. I passed the starter past the axle and trans. Removing the cover may cause the Starter to fall apart on you, but that almost makes it easier to manipulate. If re-manufactured then put it back together and ship the core off as usual. As for installation, the power harness may be tricky to put in and line up, so firstly place the starter in place, retaining bolts, then apply the power harness and connector.

I disagree with the music push back. Backyard Chevy just has a soft voice that is not always able to be heard clearly. You don't need the music or his voice to figure out what he is doing because the video quality is so damned good. Nice work. I did take the exhaust pipe off but I have a lift and torches. I also am working on a coupe which is tighter with respect to access but the video is top notch. On the coupe I went in from the wheel well on the top bolt.

Very informative video. A suggestion if I may though... Make your voice a little louder and turn down the music. Also, the location of the starter was not depicted very clearly. I know where it is but it would be helpful to start recording as you go under the car and locate the starter. Other than that, thanks for uploading!!

Thats awesome..glad to hear u were able to do it...normally its the contacts inside the starter solenoid that get worn, so overtime it wont make a good connection to the two contacts, or it can also be the brushes inside the starter that get worn as well...but also the starter overheating can cause a starter or solenoid to fail.

Backyard Chevy I had to get someone. It was really bad weather last several days, minus 35. I noticed the car took a while to start while I turned it on. Thought it was the weather. Couple days ago I started the car, was struggling to turn and it shut off. Couldn't turn it back on. I thought it was a weak battery. As I turn it on I was noticing a clicking sounds. I felt bad for my mom had to bus it in the freezing Cold temperature to work. Same with me. It had to happen on the worst day.
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 5 жыл бұрын
Yea its so hard to tell with cold weather, cause the starter draws more amperage and older worn out batterys tend to freeze at about those temperatures..while newer healthy batterys freeze below minus 80s or around there....but its so great of u to help her change the starter in those temperatures

Not yet. As I said previously, there's no where near as much space under the coupe's engine bay. The lower bolt was very easy to spot and get out. As for the upper bolt, we were able to get a ratchet on head, but we couldn't get enough torque to break it loose. We tried hitting the ratchet with a hammer and that wasn't even enough.
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 6 жыл бұрын
Yea that bolt is definitely tight if ur able to add a small pipe to end itll provide more leverage or one of those extendable ratchets...good luck and I hope ur able to get it out...after that itll go smoothly I'm sure

So I have a 2009 Honda Civic coupe. The past couple of weeks it was giving me trouble turning on. The car runs fine when turned on, the problem is when I turn the key it won’t start. I did noticed that the lights were kind of dim when it was on so when I took it to autozone they said it was the battery. I purchased a new one and still encountered the same problem. So I took the battery to get checked and they said it was 100 percent charged. I’m wondering what you think it could be, the lights and everything works it’s just the turning on part. I did try jumping it as well
