For others that are considering tackling this job, I just finished this on my 08 Tahoe sized escalade. A few pointers: 1) have the refrigerant pumped out, some shops might do it for free, it only cost me $40, but it's just the right thing to do. 2) The tahoe sized black plastic box holding the blower/evaporator/heater core is different than this video and can't be split in half practically on the vehicle and it would be faster to just pull it out anyways. Disconnect the coolant hoses underneath, less than a quart came out, so it wasn't a big deal at all. there are 2 bolts through the floor that hold the box on the vehicle. 3) I had to cut my AC lines at the expansion valve because it was rust welded on. I also had to cut the expansion valve most of the way through to recover the backing plate, I'd order the backing plate in addition to the expansion valve. 4) I used replacement rubber hoses from amazon/ebay that zip tie on to the old hoses, it wasn't too bad to route them through except loosening the running board brackets to get the fittings through. 5) i pulled a vacuum on it before refilling, supposedly that is very important to eliminate moisture in the system that will wreck all this work. 6) It really is quite a bit of work!

Thanks for posting this video. I keep hearing a hissing noise in the very back of my 2010 escalade luxury. Im going to take that panel off, n see what it is now that i know where the rear expansion n actuator are. Im also going to discharge my system to change those filter in the high ports n the one in the back. I charged my system but it does not blow all that cold. Once again thank you for posting the video and for all the information. I got a good head start now on tackling my problem.

Great video. For future reference the word "Freon" was a Dupont trademarked brand name for the former refridgerant R-12. Which is no longer in use. The newer R-134a has no special name, it's just called refridgerant.

Does the air blower or expansion valve control only the rear air vents?

There is also a filter inline for the rear in the smaller line running to the back under the hood. If you had the compressor fail or discharged replace it then too. $3.99 at local parts house

Great vid!!! I would like your thoughts on my AC issue. I have an 07 GMC Acadia and when running the AC for an hour or more on humid days, the air stops blowing out the front vents but I can still hear the blower going. At the same time, hot air comes out the back AC. If I turn off the AC button and leave the blower on, air will start coming out the front air vents after 10-15 minutes. Turn the AC button back on and the front vents and back blow cool air for about 15 minutes then the issue starts over again. Had a garage re-charge system but it wasn't really low and he added dye and could find no leaks.

Good job! The only thing you missed was to clean out the rear air flow area and clean the evaporator while you had it out.

Also on my 2002 tahoe, where you take off the two lines in the rear under neath the vehicle, if I turn on the ac, air actually comes out from there...

How did you remove those parts? Minute 9:30 I did try following this video but it’s those come off’ do you need a special tools to separate those parts?

I have a 2015 Chevy Tahoe that just had a leaking condenser changed and the front is great but the back is hot. The dealer changed the rear evaporator but it’s still not blowing cold. I noticed the lines running front to back under the Tahoe are not cold and no drip from the rear condensation drain at all. Any help would be appreciated!

Escalade is blowing Hot air readings of gauges are 125 High and 55-60 Low when compressor comes on, note compressor is coming on about every 30 seconds what do you think problem could be, could tube be clogged ?

I have a 2007 suburban with rear AC problems. The actuators are fine, but the air in the rear is just not cold enough. If there is a leak in the rear system, would the front AC system still work fine? If so, I guess it would be best to check for leaks before replacing alot of parts.

Can I change the expansion valve without opening the hvac unit inside the truck !? I mean only from outside! I needed to replace the rear a/c expansion valve on my 2007 Tahoe LTZ but I can’t get the case to split on the bottom. I’ve removed every clip and screw but the case will not split to expose the rear heater core and the evaporator. Are there any clips inside the case?

did you use a flaring tool for those fittings underneath were you had the leak.

You need to pull a vacuum to reduce the boiling point temperature of water so any moisture boils off into steam. You need to look at a conversion chart and make sure your pump will go down far enough at the ambient temp to achieve this. Yes just pulling a vacuum is way better than nothing...but technically if it was open for a long time it needs a proper vacuum for extended period to get all the moisture. That harbor freight pump (if its the single stage) will only go to 27 in HG. That is like 110 degrees to boil off moisture.

You should add 3 oz of pag oil in the evaporator lines or in the evaporator it self before replacing your expansion valve

At 6:53 I'm pretty sure that's an Evaporator coil and not a condenser unit. But hey I could be wrong, you may have a heat pump unit what do I know?

Don't mean to rip on GM cars since i have one myself, but the A/C is just awful on these cars. Every year it needs a a few $100 if you're handy just to get cold a/c. Meanwhile my mom's honda is just zipping along. Looking at a ridgeline just to avoid all the little seals, lines corroding apart, a/c compressors, rear a/c seals, and all the rest that have failed on my GM. My van has a/c cut off to the rear after all the issues for its last remaining season.

can you have it evacuated by a professional then do your own work and recharge it on your own? I hear its around 100 bucks to have it evacuated, it would cost me that much to by the gauges and pump.

"Next time"! Lay the evaporator on a piece of cardboard, so you don`t poke holes in the evaporator.
