Your truck was running ruff after start up because you had air in your fuel lines not the egr. After the truck bled it out it ran fine.

Great job on the rebuild!! You give me confidence to try it myself. I'm like you not a mechanic but very mechanically inclined. You spoke of a book you used. I have the complete set of the century class workshop manuals on cd and paperback. I think you have something different. I would like the info for the book so I could get one myself 🙂. Great job on the rebuild again. It's about time a 14 liter was put on KZfaq 👍

When i was speaking about the book, you probably have the same thing i have. I bought the cd online. Loaded it on my computer. When i get home today I'll look and see exactly what i have and let you know. No problem at all

Good job on the rebuilding it I’m in the process of doing one got everything done waiting on the head to get back Can you guide me on the timing of crankshaft and the camshaft Thx 😊
@curtisnstacey
@curtisnstacey 3 жыл бұрын
i bought the timing device that goes on the camshaft and bolts to the gear cover on it so it'll keep it in place. as far as the crankshaft believe it or not i never once during the whole process turn it a complete revolution. lol. i would turn it half way then the other way back to center.

you ever heard of the "ugly fix"? been thinking of trying it
@prevost8686
@prevost8686 4 жыл бұрын
curtisnstacey They say it works well if your egr system is functioning properly. Guys on Detroit Facebook say that as long as you egr is working like it should when you install the ugly fix it will do what they claim it will. It’s definitely worth trying to stop sending all of that abrasive soot back into the engine.

@@prevost8686 after that comment im going to go ahead and buy it. i worked the truck today for the first time. runs way better than it did. way more power and the egr is working correctly at the moment. i guess now would be the time to try it. its around $150 last time i checked

Yes. It works as advertised if your egr works and flap is clean internally. Been using it for 250k miles.

@@curtisnstacey used it for 6 years now. Never go without it. You notice your oil stays cleaner a whole lot long. You can tell it's working the first time you step on the accelerator
@georgegeorgepht
@georgegeorgepht 4 жыл бұрын
Oil pressure gages does that on mine also. Does it on all these engines for some reason. I never found out why. Mine idling stays on 50. When I accelerate it hits 60. When cold. Once my truck warms up on a hot day it drops to 40-35 lbs of oil pressure. The older the oil the lower the pressure. I try to change it at 10-15 k miles doing over the road work. If I run heavy, I try and change to every 10k miles.

Absolutely awesome job. My truck has been in the shop for a month getting an inframe. Same 14L Detroit engine as you. Did your fuel economy change at all before and after the rebuild? If so, what were you getting before and what are you getting now?

U should t be able to hear the egr opening and closing. I think what you heard was the turbo actuator opening and closing. Or the part that controls the actuator is going bad. That part is bolted at the bottom back of the block on the passenger side. It’s 350$ part and you need the core. That will tell the actuator to open and close and that In turn opens the turbo and closes it. When my actuator started going crazy and stuttering, I changed that part and it fixed it right away. Sorry I don’t remember the name of the part. Put follow the lines from the actuator and you will see it on the bottom of the block on passenger side all the way close to bell housing.

This is awesome. You must be in Georgia or Alabama or South Carolina. I bet that 14 liter is a pulling son of a b. What is the horsepower and torque set at? Is it a cat killer?
@curtisnstacey
@curtisnstacey 3 жыл бұрын
You guessed it. South Carolina. Honestly im not sure about the hp and torque, I've never got into that stuff too much. As far as a cat killer i couldn't tell ya lol.... it pulls great and runs great however i hardly ever go over 60mph. Lol. All local back roads

@@curtisnstacey a Detroit is a money maker. I own a few old trucks. I also drive my friends trucks on the side. Friend has Pete 379 with c-15 cats and 18 speeds turned up hot. Even when near stock 550-600-750 ish power they constantly crack heads, blow head gaskets, and on and on. Holy hell. It’s just unreasonable. But, even when loaded with 90k....have yet to to encounter a truck that out pulls me. - when it comes to my personal trucks, I’m sticking with big cam cummins, Mack e7, or series 60 Detroit. I don’t have time or money to play around like that.

@@curtisnstacey how many special tools did you buy to do it yourself?
@curtisnstacey
@curtisnstacey 3 жыл бұрын
@@chadsouders6457 i bought the bore gauge that checks your protrusion, got 1 big torque wrench that goes up to 600ft pounds, smaller ft lb torque wrench, detroit timing pin, detroit timing mechanism that holds the cam in place while putting it back on, detroit plate that bolts onto the head for removing it, inch pound torque wrench. i think there maybe a couple more if i think of them i'll comment. but i did have to borrow the liner puller and the liner pusher. those 2 tools alone cost almost $2000. the shop that done the head work let me borrow those. the piston and liner has to go in the block at the same time, so you'll have to put the rings on the pistons and load them into the liners and install at once. DO NOT attempt to load them in the liners on your own without a proper ring squeezer. i broke 3 oil rings in the process and had to take the rest of them up to the shop so they could load them for me.

now that i've finally done one after driving 19 years, to tell ya the truth, i hope and pray that i never ever ever have to do another one. i done this by myself, it wasnt fun. with the parts and having the head done and all the special tools i bought i had $6800 in it. when it wouldnt crank for those first few min after the rebuild it took me on a emotional roller coaster ive never been on. LOL. i'll never forget that feeling. after all that one shot of starting fluid it fired right up. i drive the truck everyday, even today. runs perfect and i havent had to do anything to it. i really cant believe it. sorry for the long response. but i'll never do another one. haha. thanks for watching my brother
