What size socket for the spark plugs?
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
The spark plugs have likely been replaced before. (In fact the engine could have been rebuilt or at least had pistons and rings replaced underca recall.) Yes that 2.4 AZ-FE engine is notorious for burning oil because it had defective pistons & oil rings. Some may have been replaced but probably not all because they often did not start burning oil until they had 150,000 miles.

I would be curious to learn the maintenance history of this relatively high mileage engine. As we know, some 2.4 engines had an oil consumption issue so it would be instructive to learn its oil change frequency as well as the quality of oil that has been used.

there is a gasket (o ring alike) on the valve cover around the spark tube, if this o ring go bad it will leak inside the spark tube.

Timing is perfect for this video. I am considering buying one of these used in the same year and configuration (4wd 4cyl) if I can find one with around 100,000 miles. What is your opinion on this engine and transmission? Do you think they routinely will last to 200,000 miles and beyond? You mentioned this one is a oil burner and have herad Toyota engines of this time period do burn oil. Thanks
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
If it was made in Japan, it should be okay. Or if it had the pistons and rings replaced. However, I've also read that there was some problem with head bolts as well. Note the following... "There have been complaints of this engine “burning oil” in North America with the issue starting after 45k miles, though mostly after 60k-75k miles. Piston ring design has been identified as a problem. Toyota has even issued a TSB (Technical service bulletin) TSB #0094-11 in August 2011 but have refused to issue general recall. Also more convincingly reported as a head gasket problem the 2AZ-FE aluminum block head bolt threads wear out on the back 3 middle bolts (closest to firewall). There are several class-action lawsuits underway regarding this widespread issue. In January 2015, Toyota North America caved in and issued extended warranty notification (ZE7) for this issue. However, Toyota still insists that burning 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles is “normal”. This applies to Toyota North America vehicles only." Above is quoted from... roadmasterengineworld.com/2018/03/2001-2007-toyota-2azfe-engine/

And NO the difference between the lines on the dip-stick is likely NOT one quart. Our 2009 RAV4 has the 2.5 liter AR-FE engine (not the 2.4 liter AZ-FE like yours) but there is 1.6 quart difference between the lines on the dip-stick. I can't say that the 2.4 is the same but don't assume it's only one quart.

bigdaddymak1439 as the spark is rather white’ish, I would first check valves seals. Usually when the consumption is coming from the bottom, piston rings, the oil is not atomized enough to be fully burned and then the spark plug is black and oily!
