The thing I have to say about this is that pros always have to rely on ability, not on equipment, ever. No matter what their sponsors make the bowlers say, it's not the equipment, it is how they use it. Sport shot patterns don't let them miss, no matter what ball they are using. Besides that, people have used plastic in professional events even when it wasn't mandatory. One famous example was Jason Belmonte using his spare ball during the Shark a few years back.
@caduceusjules
@caduceusjules 9 жыл бұрын
Speaking of Belmonte, why did he use plastic on Shark? Isn't Shark a really long oil pattern that would suit more aggressive balls? I don't understand oil patterns that well, so I've been wondering about that for a while.
@Dtyler171
@Dtyler171 9 жыл бұрын
axesebi The only way you could find that out is if you ask Jason. Clearly he felt like he had to, but I couldn't really tell you why. That said, if my memory serves me correctly, he played well using his spare ball.
@Brogers97
@Brogers97 9 жыл бұрын
Dtyler171 Just to clarify, Belmonte used his spare ball on the Viper pattern. That particular show had the Shark pattern on the left lane, and Viper on the right. That was his first win. But none the less, still used plastic.

Dtyler171 He used plastic because his reactive ball was over hooking so he would result to a plastic ball. Source: Experience as a two handed bowler who is almost identical to Belmo's
@countrywesternbowling6477
@countrywesternbowling6477 8 жыл бұрын
+Dtyler171 One thing that needs to be clarified is that while yes, you absolutely need to do all of the work yourself, throw good shots, etc., they're saying is that it is much easier for them to control their shots since the balls almost hook for themselves for them and that they were stuggling since many of them were trying to do what many beginners tend to do, which is to try to force the ball to hook on this cheetah pattern with half of the oil than normal, also, with the plastic ball you get more carry down and the lanes don't break down like they do with normal reactive balls

Actually pretty cool to see them go back to this concept. My dad remembers bowling with the 3 dot 30 years ago and just bought the Paradox and couldn't believe how much easier it was. Like any other sport, technology makes these games more advanced than what they were. I would struggle if I couldn't use my 3 main balls and only the plastic.

They do. This is why honor scores like 300 and 800 mean nothing anymore. Houses "wall" their lanes and allow kids to just huck these strong bowling balls out near the gutter and have them fly back to the pocket with little to no skill involved. I remember last year we had this kid who averaged like 235 in our league on a house shot. We put out an old heavy oil pattern for fun which made you have to actually hit a mark on the lane and be accurate, and the guy couldn't even break a 190. I average 220 but I do not use strong equipment. I play "down and in" and I was able to bowl 200+ consistently. Bowling really is a joke anymore. But then again all sports have become this way sadly.

@@sageofsixpaths6708 uhhh, no... People have higher scores because its EASIER to score... Are you saying people in teh past did not have skill? You are on crack. Go play on a vintage lane with a vintage rubber ball with mopped lanes and lets see what you average...
@JonHop1
@JonHop1 3 жыл бұрын
@@sageofsixpaths6708 It doesnt take as much skill. You do not have to be as precise or accurate as the bowling balls, and the oil bring the ball perfectly into an optimal angle for striking. Its just physics. When you play with a rubber ball, on mapped lanes like in the 60's, it was near impossible to play hook and get the ball to strike consistently with a "hook" style... Do you know how many people tried to play with revs and hook back then? A LOT of people... Fact is, it didnt work on those lanes with that equipment. Now, you do not have to be that accurate. While the PBA has implemented "patterns" to combat how easy bowling is with modern equipment, even then, accuracy down to a board is not needed.. Just watch that one Players Championship with Belmo where the guy NEVER hits his mark, and rarely ever hits the pocket, yet strikes every single shot and wins.. Its because of the power of the bowling equipment. 2-handed style has been used since the 40's. It simply did not work back then with mopped lanes and Rubber balls. This because Rubber bowling balls did not build up energy and soak up oil, so there was little to no benefit to using a high-revolution, "hook" style back then. It was a harder game back then.

Anyone who says the equipment doesn't matter, compare Barnes first throw to any other footage of Barnes throwing with his modern ball. Listen to any of the interviews about how they have to work harder. I'm not saying any of us could go out and beat these guys with a plastic ball but think of how good bowlers like Carmen Salvino, Don Carter, Marion Ladewig, and Billy Hardwick really were. What about guys who you may have never heard of, like Fred Lening. I would love to see the PGA do a real wood tournament or an all wooden rackets tennis event. It doesn't take away from the greatness of these people, it just gives you a greater appreciation for the ones who came before them.

The PBA needs to bring this event back. To add a unique wrinkle, they ought to find a big house that still has wood lanes and is willing to host the event, and condition the lanes like they used to...by hand. Bring back the short 24’ patterns and have Len Nicholson come and do the lanes for the event, all for the sake of authenticity :)

The fact that the champion has to finish out their game before celebration is such an abrupt disappointment. Commentator: "He's won! Now everyone shut up so he can roll his last frame." Carter: "(stupid last frame I just wanna jump up and down and hug my kids)" ... *rolls ball* Commentator: "Finish strong Jeff! OOOH, only 8." Carter: "(GAH! I'm gonna purposely miss this just so I can stop bowling)" ... *rolls ball* ... "(HA!)"

How about bringing back rubber and having rubber ball tourneys. If you can throw rubber and plastic, you can throw urethane and RR and HBR.

Can someone please take me down the timeline of 20th and 21st century bowling. All this talk of plastic balls and reactive resin has me sooooo confused lol
@chrisplaysvirtualpiano7668
@chrisplaysvirtualpiano7668 7 жыл бұрын
In the 70s they used rubber balls with short oil. Rubber balls had that pancake tiny core and were very hard and smooth, meaning they did not grip the lane. Then came out the plastic ball, which was a little more grippy but still very weak. After that was urethane. Urethane was stronger than plastic but not too aggresive. As these balls were created the patters got longer. moving on to the 21st century, reactive balls came out with symetrical cores in the center. These balls had much grippier surfaces with plenty of surface on them. The cores really drove the ball into the pocket. As time went on, the surfaces and cores got more effecient and the patterns grew longer as a result. then assymetrical balls came out which allowed for sharper turns, and the surfaces got wider pores which allowed better grip. And here we are now :)

dont forget the lanes were wood back then, and with the short oils, even those balls gripped well. but not too much like the snapping there is today,
@dougmckinney4891

This is mostly correct except for the long oil pattern was standard for both amateur and pro's until the 1980's and then the amateurs were allowed to bowl on short oil. Short oil inflated scores too. Pro's were still on long oil as well as most reputable amateur tournaments then. One more thing with oil patterns is that prior to the different named oil patterns of today there were many a bowling center that played with the way lanes were oiled. I remember some houses that had some blocked lanes yielding phenomenal scores before reactive resins came out.

I wish I could remember the tournament the P.B.A. put new 3-10's in the house and scores were low. I believe it was when reactive resins had came out and were relatively new but my memory isn't that sharp.

They mention that the Yellow dot was plastic, Well yes it was but they had the nickname 'THE BLEEDER', as they used to secrete something that used to make them more grippy, Then when they eventually dried out after about 18 months they were known to start developing cracks & became scrap.

Thought they soaked them in something (possibly acetone) to get additional grip and the acetone would bleed out. I never did this as the tournaments I bowled would disqualify you if caught.
