Refreshing to see all naturally-aspirated cars. Sure, the Hellcat and ZL1 Camaro have power, but remove the superchargers and they don't make any more power than the big blocks made a half-century ago. And the big blocks still made more torque.

I had a 69' 383 RoadRunner, I knew those old car would be classics so I had planned to keep mine and this was in the 70s. Some b1tch backed out of a parking spot without looking and messed up my right front fender and I only had liability insurance. Her insurance wanted to total just because the whole fender would need to be replaced, we finally settled with a check. So my mother knew someone that did body work after hours on the side. While he had possession someone vandalized it, knocked out the glass and broke into it. I was already strapped for money. The car got fixed but was a half ass job and was never happy with it so I ended up selling it. If had it now I could afford to have it restored.

Good to see the factory muscle cars go at it instead of the bored and supercharged hot rods that are running in so many of the videos. The original Super Stock class and maybe the SSX are most interesting, you really have to set them up and fine tune the car plus the skill of the driver to come out a winner.

Summary of comments: 1) No way these cars are stock 2) Yes, they are, except for the tires 3) No, they're not. The following mods are allowed: (Fill in the blanks) 4) Who cares? It's just great to see all this muscle racing.
@shaunchigas54935 жыл бұрын
These Are not all completely stock cars. These “Stocker” meets have certian specs the cars are required to make. Your allowed a pre determined: rise and duration on your cam, cylinder bore, crank stroke, CFM for your carbs, exhaust diameter, weight, and ignition. So if your motor is under these specs you get away with those mods. Been drag racing for 30 years. We run a stocker Max Wedge class with a 63 Plymouth Sport Fury With a 426 Wedge. I run 10.60’s around 130mph.
@SealofPerfection5 жыл бұрын
You're correct, to a point. They aren't Stocker engines, though. You can't play around with the camshaft like they can with Stocker cams. They CAN cut the heads to raise compression a bit, but that's about it. Has to have stock carb with choke, stock ignition (no MSD boxes), stock exhaust manifolds. You can blueprint all you want, but the internals have to be stock.

"Factory stock" is a misnomer in that a host of modifications are permitted. For example, the engines can be bored .060" over, 3 angle valve jobs can be employed, combustion chambers can be cc'd to NHRA specified minimums, drag oriented suspensions can be employed as can modern mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust systems and so on. See "pure stock drags" website for more information.

There is no way there cars are really stock - not even close. For those who claim these extreme times and traps speeds are the result of improved traction don't understand that traction, while it helps with your ETs (up to maybe 0.5 seconds), has only a minimal effect on trap speeds. Even if in 1970 you spun 60 feet and gained only 1 MPH and today you hooked instantly at full power, that wouldn't help your trap speed any more than if you added 60 feet to the end of the track. In that scenario, it would shave off just under 0.4 seconds on a RAM Air IV Firebird. The difference in trap speed would be minimal because, although it accelerated better because it hooked, it also accelerated for less time. For that first Firebird to run a 11.89 second quarter at 116.41 MPH, it would have to have 44.3% more net horsepower over stock or it would have to weight 1020 few pounds. The times and speeds demonstrated by some of these cars are like the better super stock cars were in the 1960's and those cars had slicks, headers, huge cams, etc. And even then, most of the super stocks cheated (car's were dipped in acid baths to reduce weight and/or they had stock looking but non-stock cheater heads, etc).

Truth be told muscle cars from 53 -72 had more power than the tires and suspension could handle. On the street alot of brutal cars either went up in smoke or the driver was not able to handle the horses. Myself embarrassed alot brutal street machines with a small block car with a 2barrel carb single exhaust. My shop teacher was a professional drag racer and he helped me set my sleeper up. They always demand I show them the motor. They couldn't believe a stock small block was that fast. With that said most muscle cars of past were close in power and preformance on the street. The one's who dominated were the ones who really understand drag racing. Although I have to admit the GS Buicks and ram air Pontiacs dissapointed alot of bad ass cars.

All of you saying these are NOT stock - Remember the crappy bias ply tires they had back then & the compounds they spray (for traction), onto the tracks to prep the tracks with that -1) they didn't even use back then, or 2) were inferior to the compounds & products sold today. B/c of technology, much has improved in the past 45 years with the exception of ppl's morals :( Sad

Okay, better tires = better times. Please explain some cars picking up 10MPH or more! That is a LOT of HP difference over stock - too much just to assume its the result of better tuning.
@muffdiver777yummy85 жыл бұрын
@@CJ-ib2jy dude the faster they hook the faster than can begin solidly accelerating. Its no surprise they pick up 10 mph. If you spun for 60ft the 60ft less you got to accelerate which will lose you speed aswell as time
@428CJ705 жыл бұрын
@@muffdiver777yummy8 When I used to run cars, my time changed by up to 0.75 seconds depending on how I hooked or how bad I lit my tires. But my speed at the end didn't vary hardly at all.
@muffdiver777yummy85 жыл бұрын
@@428CJ70 but if your spinning tire then you arent accelerating full on and the farther your traveling with tire spin the lesser your distance is to accelerate properly it doesnt make sense that their times can change but their speeds would remain the same. Cause 20 foot of spin means 20 feet less to get up to speed and ex amount of time lost. Its like if you start a car 1/4 of the way down the track its speed is gunna be less than one farther back

Anyone else notice on the 455’s Trans Am’s they’re behind off the line .. but mid way that torque motor kicks in and pulls for the win. Almost everyone. Also with the 455 Buick’s GS’s. My friend had one .. and back in the early 80’s he raced a lot .. GTO judge.. 440 mopars .. he would get beat off the line .. but always pulled in front at the end. Those 455’s were very underrated motors.
