In this video we look at the 2009 Subaru Tribeca. My wife noticed a High Pitch Squeal that ended up being the Stationary Idler Bearing. Once the car warmed up the sound would go away so I did not hear it like she had noticed. You will see what ours looked like and what could possibly happen to yours as well, with any car really, not just the Tribeca. The video shows changing out the serpentine belt, stationary idler pulley and the bearing for the tensioner pulley.

Question on the bolt behind the pulley, where exactly does that go and how did you go about securing it?

I will try my best, it has been about 3 years ago. Are you asking about the tensioner pulley that I took off and added the bearing into. If so it had a nut that slides into the back. It is a hex shaped hole for it to slide into. It may usually stay, but I did just want to warn that it could easy push out and fall. The stationary pulley just had a bolt that threaded into the aluminum housing if I remember correctly.

appreciate the video-- I might add that it would be good to torque down the idler and tensioner to the prescribed amount (I believe 25 lbs) because over-tightening can be rough on the bearings.

I just installed those Napa pulleys and they are damn high end- look like they are machined not stamped or molded. Once I installed the serpentine belt is running on center on the pulley of the that is at the center (not the idler pulley) -- not sure why. A: Do you know if there is an adjustment (like on the alternator) so I can adjust the belt position or B. is there a front or back on that pulley (thought maybe I have it installed the wrong way) -- I figured that the bearing is dead center but did not check when I had it in my hand.

I thought the same thing about the quality of the pulley for the price! It has been a while since I repaired this but I am pretty sure the bearing is centered. I do not believe it has any adjustment. Mine is all centered. It has been a great repair, no issues. Just a thought but all the items are lined up right, such as the crank to the alternator, compressor etc. That should all be aligned. At this point I would have to wonder what is out of alignment with those and make sure it is seated correctly! I'm sure you know to make sure the bearing is seated all the way on the tensioner pulley but the idler should already be centered. If it is not aligned with the others, I would double check that it is correct idler!

Do you know what kind of nut you talk about at 9:00 We need a replacement but haven't been able to find one!

Sorry I did not notice the size of the nut. I just wanted to mention that it could be dropped very easily. It will be a metric. I would go to hardware store and look for a 10mm x 1 or a 12mm x 1 and see if it looks correct. If the size is close but the thread pitch is different you can also get fine or coarse thread in metric like we do in standard for example instead of 10mmx1 you can also get 10mmx.75 and 10mmx1.25. Best of luck!
