Thank you! My 2008 Prius has had this problem off & on but this time it has stayed off for several days. Watched several videos with "fixes" but nothing else worked. Did just what you showed and they're back on! (My car has 410,000 miles on it!)

Thank you! I tried my classic fix (turn off car, wait 20 sec, turn on car) and a bunch of other fixes from KZfaqrs. But this was the one that worked. Great video with well presented info. Thanks again!

Ashley, you are awesome! Thank you for this video. It works perfectly. Your instructions are very clear and to the point. The fix makes sense since what it does is like a little 'reset'. Kinda thing you do w/ your computer. Unplug, let sit for some seconds and after you connect and turn on everything is normal

You don't have to do all this. First open the drivers door, 2 push the power button with out pushing the brake pedal, 3 press and hold the climate button, 4 mash the brake pedal and pull back on the high beams headlights. If the dash doesn't come on press the emergency flashers button. When the door open and the beeper for the door comes on you can start the car. I've been doing this on both my Prius for years now.

Hi there, I have definitely heard of that technique before but it didn't see to work on my car. I have since gotten my car fixed therefore I don't have this problem anymore, but thank you for sharing! Maybe someone will find this helpful 😊

@@Ashlyeanddiana You mentioned you got this problem resolved. What was the actual fix? My car is having the same problem, started yesterday where the car wouldn’t turn off
@Ashlyeanddiana

@@Mohammed-qo4wf yes, there are a few ways you can go about fixing it, what I did was replace the combination meter. In a lot of Priuses this age, they die, or become faulty. It was a preety big task, that ran me about $700 for my mechanic to do. I definitely recommend going to a few different mechanics before you make that decision. The Toyota dealer quoted me $1050. In the meantime I hope this video was helpful! 😊

I was having the same problem. Research led me to believe it's the capacitor. My workaround had been to disconnect the 12V battery in trunk; then reconnect it. This works but began to be more of a nuisance. I decided to wire a light -switch (common AC light switch 120V/15A found cheaply in hardware stores) with a short length of wire (common lamp-wire 14-gauge). Wired between grounding screw and ground wire to battery. This method allows easy access to disconnect/reconnect battery (i.e. reset electrical system). Capacitors acts to reduce ripple effect on the voltage. The main problem seems to be as the original capacitor(s) degrade over time, they may no longer reliably reduce the initial ripple (upon startup) to allow the computer to fully initialize; hence the multifunction display isn't brought online. While the light-switch was a fairly easy, quick, and cheap workaround, it seems to also have resolved the issue! Perhaps the addition of the switch and wiring induces a small measure of capacitance? In any case, I haven't had that issue again in months, if it recurs I can reset via the switch. Note: I folded the excess metal of switch and used electrical tape wrapped around it to form protective 'wings' so switch doesn't accidentally get switched OFF. Works great!

These are all temporary fix but all the issues will keep coming back eventually . All these issues are due to a bad speedometer cluster (the dash light issue) That all the second generation 2005-2009 Prius, have due to bad capacitor on the dash speedometer. Luckily there’s an easy fix to it. There is plenty of listings on eBay of people selling the part that is causing all these issues , with the correct capacitor. Some even offer to program the miles to your current miles on your car too! It’s such an easy and inexpensive fix , with plenty of tutorials on KZfaq , it’s really not that hard to replace either! You just need a couple tools and some patients.

Correct! This is a temporary fix and NOT a cure. There is a way to completely fix the problem and that is to replace the combination meter (which is what I later did ----> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMWIpryHv5a3eY0.html ) Thank you for your suggestion!

That's only a temporary fix. To fix it permanently there is a capacitor on the back of the combination meter that has to be replaced. This can cause a number of different problems and can ultimately leave you stranded if not properly addressed.

Yes! This is definitely a temporary fix, but it definitely helped me and a lot of others between the time of first experiencing the problem to the time people can get it fixed considering it's an expensive procedure if you choose to go to a mechanic. Take a look at my video of me getting my car's combination meter fixed 😊 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMWIpryHv5a3eY0.html
