On a darker note, I’m surprised no one has really commented on the Chris Brown’s assault of Rihanna in February of that year. As a fan of both at the time (at age 12), it absolutely shattered my worldview because I didn’t really see it coming and I-almost completely oblivious to how toxic that relationship really was-really liked them as a couple. It’s hard to imagine now but Brown had a very clean, golden-boy image about him that made the scandal all that more shocking. It’s even crazier when you add the fact that the both of them were near-superstars scheduled to perform at the Grammys the very next night. Even harder to imagine, since she’s a universally-liked figure now, Rihanna got a lot of shit thrown at her in the aftermath of that. She was ridiculed for staying with him shortly after the incident. The pictures of her injuries had leaked that same week, along with nudes that, if I remember correctly, cost her her endorsement with Covergirl. Rumors of promiscuity and her having an STD (and being beaten for giving it to him) were still rampant, and to top it all of, I distinctly remember after a revealing 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer 9 months later, a hashtag about how big her forehead was the #1 trending topic on twitter for 3 straight days. It was a wild time. I don’t think I’ve ever followed a scandal as closely as I followed that one. It genuinely changed my consumption of pop culture, and through keeping up with the story though blogs, I stumbled into stan culture in the comments sections, as well as on some new social media site called twitter, and life hasn’t been the same since. It...changed me.

Okay, I hear you, but... when we look back, what are we more likely to remember as impactful on culture: “Single Ladies” or “insert name of Taylor’s winning video here, I genuinely don’t remember it.” And full transparency, I am not a fan of either of them. I know, I’m not even a Beyoncé fan, I think she’s overrated, don’t come for me. But I still remember how big “Single Ladies” was, I remember Justin Timberlake doing it on SNL... it was huge.

for the longest time i thought that Tiger Woods’ scandal was that he was physically abusing his wife and when everyone was so okay with him walking around a free man i was so confused (but of course he was cheating, not anything else, and that’s not punishable by law...) and then i asked my mom why he wasn’t in jail and she explained it and i had one of the biggest realizations of my life...

I don't know how else to say this: 2009-2012 was like peak gay years. Like, the only way I can describe it is that the cultural zeitgeist was gay. Not like homosexual, but like campy and dramatic. See below: 1. Music: we are doing dance pop ladies. Music is dancepop, music is upbeat - music videos are over the top costumes with wild concepts. Gaga does Bad Romance, Beyonce does Single Ladies, Katy does Teenage Dream, Rihanna does S&M, Kesha does Tik Tok, Nicki does Super Bass, Taylor even starts breaking into the pop game with Red. The music is danceable, happy, and the stars of the era are the pop divas. Born This Way is the gayest album to go as big as it did ever, in 2011. 2. TV: I cannot express how campy, silly, fun, and gay TV was from 2009 to 2012. Obvious frontrunner here is Glee (which I think is a genuinely entertaining show even if it clearly has some messy moments/characters) - if you were in school while Glee was airing, it was truly a cultural reset. I was already doing theater at the time, and every singing & theater group at school tripled in size, and you couldn't go a week on the radio without either hearing one of the songs or hearing about the episode. Other TV options that appeal to the over the top and campy are the comedies: during this time period, you could tune into NBC and watch a new episode of The Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, and Community all back to back. All of those shows, but particularly Parks & Rec and Community which started in 2009, are campy, silly, and about found family to an extent. Drag Race also starts in 2009. American Horror Story starts in 2011. It was gay ladies. 3. Movies: Movies take longer to set up, so I understand why they weren't as gay in 2009, but it seems notable that the Muppets Movie came out in 2011. 4. Miscellaneous/New Media: 2009 was also A Very Potter Musical, which was formative for the gays both in it being the best fanfiction ever of our childhood literary classic and in it giving us Darren Criss, an essential component of the 2009 - 2012 gay era. This is also when Tumblr starts being a thing. And then miraculously everything started to fall apart all at once. Lady Gaga was crimed with Artpop in 2013, Glee turned sharply for the worse in 2013, Community's Gas Leak year was 2013. In summary, whatever was in the water in 2009 - 2012, the cool thing was to be campy, over the top, and kind of gay.

fun story: 2009 I was seven years old at most when the hannah montana movie released. I was dressed up in a bedazzled jean jacket and fake hair extensions completely ready to watch in my living room with a tea party. the unspeakable happened and the power went out, i screamed throwing a fit until my dad took me to every restaurant in our town asking the owners if they would change the channel to disney for me. I sat in a mexican restaurant for over two hours singing along at 8 pm. 2009 was a year

For me MJ's death was a time I'll never forget. That man DEFINED pop culture for DECADES. Not to mention the impact on culture his death had. I don't think we will ever see such a mammoth reaction to a celebrity's death ever again. Dude literally broke google when the news first broke. The death of a musical genius and an icon who broke through so many barriers; racial being one of his most important.
