It wouldn't be surprising for the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 to show up wearing an American flag like a cape, bald eagle at the helm with smoke pouring out of the rear wheel wells and fireworks exploding overhead. This is pure American muscle.

I own a "new" Dodge Charger R/T 5.7 liter Hemi. I bought it new last May. It's got a black exterior and a "tan" leather interior with heated/cooled seats front and rear. You won't believe this, the front driver & passenger cup holders are cooled (COLD) and heated to keep your favorite beverage cold or hot. My R/T came with the handling package, i.e. electronic/computer aided stability control that actually works so well I can feel the difference, auto headlights, bright lights on the bottom of the front doors that at night let's you see what you're going to step on when you get out, no more getting out and stepping in dog poo ! The car is "loaded" as auto salesmen like to say, too many options to mention ! Although the hands free cell phone and radio controls need to be noted for safety sake, it lets me keep my eyes where they should be...on the road ahead of me, it only takes 2 seconds to hug or even cross the center line a bit, drift onto the berm , fail to notice that car parked in the tall grass is a State Trooper, or a deer has jumped out of the woods and is in the road ! Power and speed? In the long run the Charger was superior, I've driven it 125+ MPH (on private property, with the owners express written consent...nor were we drag racing and there were no, as in zero (0) "spectators") and I backed off @ about 126 MPH. Because of the R/T handling package you don't feel like you're going 125+ MPH, seriously, you need to watch your speed or use the cruise control on the Interstate ! They say the Governor on the Dodge is set at 147MPH. I also own a 2001 Mustang GT, convertible, in mint condition. One clear and dry day a friend drove my Mustang GT and I drove my Charger....and at 125MPH I was pulling away from him easily; when we slowed I was a good 5 car lengths in front of him ! Speaking of slowing, the Charger has far, far superior brakes than anything else I've driven ! I paste wax both cars once a month (or try to), both are garaged and the GT was tuned by Ford prior to our informal contest. Both cars have cold air intakes, the Charger has a MOPAR CAI and the GT has a premium CAI. Both run on premium most of the time, the Hemi in particular. I've had no trouble of any kind in the R/T, I did do something I've never done before, I bought a Chrysler warranty on ALL electronics good for the life of the car ! I know, I know...don't ever buy any extra warranties from the dealer, but the Charger is futuristic, electronics everywhere, many items are computer assisted , I believe I'll keep it forever, and I'm no electronics expert, far from it. Anyway, to close, both cars are awesome, but Dodge hit a home run with the Charger R/T and other variations of the Charger, such as the SRT 6.4 liter Hemi. A close friend has a red SRT with the 6.4 liter, he's had it just over a year, with absolutely no problems. Even our State Highway Patrol and local police have replaced their fleets with Chargers. Dodge wins the one for sure ! (Although I'm not going to junk the Mustang GT, in spite of a couple minor issues and big one, the fuel pump went out at 36,000, and, of course the pump is located inside the gas tank, sooo it was a new gas tank and fuel pump ! $$$$$.). Incidentally I generally set the cruise on both the R/T and GT at about 9 MPH, or 6 over the limit depending. Anywhere near construction zones and School Zones I'm right on the limit, or a bit below the limit if there are workers/kids close to my lane. Also, without exception, I slow a bit and ALWAYS move to the left lane when I see a Trooper, Police Officer with someone stopped and/or a Trooper/Police Officer/Medic/Wrecker Driver//Motorist changing a flat on the side of the road...too many times someone on foot may accidentally walk/slip/fall into the right lane! Yep, I bought the Charger for many reasons, but power, speed , handling and exceptional appearance, were on top of the list ! Hey, I'm not perfect, but I try to be aware of the extra power my Dodge has, and sure, in flat rural areas with little traffic I might kick it a bit (LOL), but I do slow down in hazardous areas. Anyway, as I've said, the Charger is the winner.

I think the main reason for it is so they can have a car that is fun to drive and really fast but can also be a daily driver/family car. People are strapped for cash now-a-days and the Charger is a good combination of power and usability. I do agree that it is a little silly to bring a four door saloon to a two door party... And maybe the Charger should have been named something else, but it still doesn't make it a bad car. The challenger was the only car that was actually made to feel classic.
@SRTifiedRAM
@SRTifiedRAM 12 жыл бұрын
I have no doubts that the car is fun, but they still should have made it optional with the six-speed manual Tremec TR-6060 with the ZF-SACHS 240mm twin-disc clutch the Challenger uses. That way you cover all aspects; the people who want the 5-speed auto-stick, as well as the ones who want the 6-speed manual.

I think its funny how the motor trend guys always try to find a way to criticize the American brand sports cars. Complaining about it stopping from 0-60 in 112ft.! Please! That is phenomenal stopping power regardless. Also, complaining about the dash? Just a couple months ago they were touting how wonderful the interior was and how it was so much nicer than other cars out there, with its quality finishes. The fact is this car kicks ass. They just don't want to upset their investors. :)

What's sad and what I wish American car companies would wake up to is that although this car may rival the M3 in a straight line quarter mile drag. Racing the two on a track is a totally different story. Make it smaller, lighter, with two doors, nicer interior, with that kind of horsepower and I'll think hard about buying American. The next SRT 10 Viper will probably fill that void though. Can't wait to see it! The new Charger though looks badass; surely the best looking since its return.

175mph. Great Cybertron. I do agree a car like this should probably have a manual transmission. However, everything else about this car is an improvement from the outgoing model -- especially the styling. Both this car and Chrysler's current 300 series took a big step out of the "typical Chrysler" look that has been around since the 1990s or so. It was cool then, but obviously it had gotten a little long in the tooth. Those taillights are all classic Mopar though.

Comparing this or the 300 to any other performance car is really stupid. It's a LARGE 4-door sedan. You can fit 2-3 adults in the back COMFORTABLY, and they even get their own doors! Sure, Mustangs, Camaros, M3s, whatever might be faster, but they are completely different classes of cars. This car is pretty much a 100% unique offering with little competition. The only thing you can really compare it to are AMG Mercs, which are obviously in a wholly different price range.

@rotor13 I see your point, and this is what angers me. It has been the other way around for centuries, literally. The first cars ever were manuals, and the first automatics were developed way later, thus they were the pricey options because it took longer to build them. Not to mention the power loss and lack of control with autos. I do miss the manual days. I guess I'll stick to my five-speed for a good while before getting rid of it. Haha!
