I really love my 2008 A4 1.9 TDI, but it's getting old and I think about this BMW for my future car in a few years. I like the red and the blue metalic colours. I test drove this car and it was so similar to mine that i felt in love. It was the 318d, so the hp and weight were similar to mine. The extra power is always welcome.

This a class leading car with performance and economy. Mercedes and Audi cannot compete with it at all. Chas Hasllett gets the pleasure of testing them all and the facts and figures speak for themselves. All this technology will be expensive to own second hand after 3-5 years though.

I have never drive or travel in A4, however I can talk about 3 series and C class. I am not sure which one is more refined from poor road conditions and wind noise, however I am pretty sure that the engine noise in 3series is much better to hear all the way, C class has very annoying engine sound ( I have compared the 4 cylinder petrol engines) and C class is a bit tighter at the back, too. Plus, most of the car magazines find 3 series more efficient as well as the official figures.

I agree you'd be pretty mad to buy this outright. Get a good leasing deal though and you're onto a winner. That also gets the cars onto the used market... Just ordered a 320d touring myself for the extra space

320d - I get 71mpg if am careful - you can get 60 around town again being careful. If youre not careful you get 48/50 easy If you hammer it in Sport - its still not all that bad 38/40 Its only if you put your foot down cold then it drops momentarily to 12/18 mpg but then picks up again to 28+ like, it also comes back to highest MPG as if the computer is reading it for you. Might be obvious but to get max chuff, like when overtaking just make sure that you've got 2,000+ RPM because the twin turbos alone won't get you there - also if in a low gear looking for acceleration, don't forget to change up in time or the revs stop increasing and so does your acceleration - not nice if it dies suddenly and maintains speed with some fast mother coming at you on his side of the road and you're trying to complete a quick overtake as safely as possible. The welly is there but you have to find it Sport mode helps. From Comfort mode to Sport mode it really is a different car! Don't forget to adjust your eco-pro settings because in the winter it will take a long time to heat the cabin and in the summer a long time for the aircon to get cold if you don't. You can fine tune it easy on the computer to get fast heat or cold

@carlgreen2721
@carlgreen2721 7 жыл бұрын
53mpg? Do you have a lead foot? I have the 320d with the 6 speed manual which is much better in my opinion, also at 70mph on a UK motorway I get over 68mpg on a long run. BMW said that the auto would give you more mpg not less, they also siad it would be more fun to drive...again I personaly disagreed with that also on test drives.

This also does 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, hot hatch performance. How long is the 0-60 on your 318i, 9 seconds? Not really a good comparison is it? , I am sure you would have one ;)

How about you employ 2 people for 20 grand each instead? Or 1 person and spend 20 grand on a car... this is silly, 320d doesn't mean what it used to.

BMW's have xdrive...the system is world class, and only 2nd to subaru's AWD...and it's only a $1800 upgrade so the dealer might even give you it for free...xdrive AWD + winter tires makes you practically invincible in the snow...if you still crash it's your fault

What are you blabbering about? You ever heard of X Drive or 4 Matic? Add in winter tires and you have a beastly car ready for winter. Heck slapping on winter tires to an RWD BMW or MB will also allow them to perform well in the snow. You like Quattro, I get that but that doesn't stop the MB and BMW from holding their own in the snow too.

Slippery conditions mean no go for old-fashioned rwd cars, such as Beemers, Mercs and Audis. (Jags are terrible in the snow. All that luxury, going nowhere.)

Same thought here. You don't show you're wealthy by paying that much for a car. You only show you're stupid. There's the same or better quality and confort for much less.

SuperBillW If I would be so rich that I couldn't give a shit about throwing money, I probably would buy an expensive saloon that looks cheap. But then, I wouldn't mind people calling me stupid for that.

+Adam Jensen (essay for you)So mate, launch your ´same or better ´ car examples. And second, just a stupid person in first place will call a bmw driver stupid. The car could have come as inhiritance. As car company or the ´money ´ was inhireted. The car doesnt belong to people who likes thowing money away, in fact it usually is a choice of those who can make money rather than giving it away with low experience bs in a shopping center. ( I bet you wont like being called an idiot if one day you win a lotto ticked and buy a Lambo.....then some losers calling you a playboy and other names.....if you won your money, it is up to you.

I wouldn't buy this car with automatic at any cost! It sould be manual and instead stupid electronic and eco-mode I would like to control the car character by my right foot!

I do see your point but then not really. You will find that a lot very high performance race cars have automatic transmissions. it is just a case of controlling the speed with your right foot rather than your right and left together. Also more concentration can be focused on steering and actually going fast - have you ever slipped a gear change in a manual on traffic light grand prix?; I have; but never in an automatic. Most of the time a manual transmission is a pain in the a** (sorry left foot) for a daily use car as they say in the US.

In racing any tenth of the second counts, racing drivers are not on the track to have fun - they are there to win. There are powerful cars for lazy rich boys who don't want to learn how to drive - it is easier when the electronics do it for you. And then are the normal cars and as I said if you want to be a monkey in a car go and take the automatic it will do the job for you (although I can't see the point of heaving sport limousine driving in comfort) but if you want to drive the damn car and to use your brain there is only one choice!

Most cars didn't have a lot of the monitoring / semi autonomous driving stuff in 2012 I think is the point. Have to be honest - owning a Hyundai that has most of the stuff you mention and a BMW, I'd take the BMW every time without all the additional crap. The difference is that the BMW doesn't really need all the monitoring stuff as it is designed well and actually has few blind spots, making it easy to drive and park. The Hyundai is a completely different beast - while it looks good and has the features, it has massive blind spots everywhere, making the monitoring stuff essential because you can't see out of the car. Many other modern small cars & SUVs are exactly the same. They're essentially tanks, with slabby sides a very small glass house in the name of "safety". Panoramic sunroofs etc. can be optioned on the BMW if you really want them, but I'd hardly call them essential bits of kit.
