Here's a great method for having FULL OVERHEAD BATTERY ACCESS with your '13-'16 Ford Escape. WAY easier than removing the airbox and pulling the battery forward.
**Wiper Recalibration**
for those whose wipers need recalibration, check out this video:
• Wiper / Motor Realignm...
Tools Needed:
- 8mm Socket (*EURO VEHICLES USE 10MM*)
- 15mm Socket
- Small Philips Driver
- T-25 Torx Driver
Follow the easy steps in the video.
Be GENTLE with the snaps of the flexible cowl, and make sure that the pins on each side of the rigid cowl drain pan are in the right place when reinstalling.
It's best to pay attention to the "Park" Position of the wipers to put them back in the same spot as before to avoid messing up the calibration/timing of the wiping! A sharpie mark can suffice on the wiper arm/motor, but there ARE little notations for the "Parked" position on the windshield
From @Centex on FordEscape.org:
"Lift the blades and look closely at the windshield on each side near the outer end of the blade where they park. Etched into the black background you'll see an alignment mark for each side (looks like a "T" with another upside down "T" below it, about a 1/2" gap top-to-bottom). The blades should be between these marks when parked.
LH blade (viewed from driver seat) is Always above the RH blade. Cycle the wipers on a wet windshield after reinstall to let the motors self-align."
*Using a PULLER TOOL is great for taking off the wiper arms from the splined wiper motor post. This is a fairly basic tool and can be found at any local auto parts store.
*When reinstalling the wiper arm, the nut needs to be torqued to 25Nm - Thanks @Murcod for the spec!
*Great opportunity to clean out your gummed up cowl vents!
This process was posted in a video by @Daniel_Ros - Not sure if he was the first, but I wanted to add it to the channel and give him props!

As a single mother and full time student, I'd like to say thank you so much! Often struggling, I appreciate all of your videos, I've used multiple. This one alone saved me $150 that extremely helps right now during back to school time for my son from clothes to groceries. Without people like you sharing your knowledge, people like me wouldn't even be able to afford to drive. Cheaper to buy the battery yourself, and no labor costs. Everyone I've talked to, including people in auto shops all talk about how hard it is! You were precise, efficient and easy to understand. Thank you again!

I just changed my battery out, and this video was a tremendous help. The only two things I can add is 1. remember which wiper blade goes on top. 2. I originally told my wife to call the dealership after I seen where it was, and they quoted $150 for the battery and installation. I figured I would save maybe $20-30 and do it myself, the battery I installed was $159 after core charge .. I haven't told her that part yet. lol

I guess Ford hid the battery on purpose so those who don’t drive a lot can’t put a trickle charger on their Escape. I might could get 5 years of life, out of my car battery if Ford had made possible. Just imagine it’s a cold winter night and your Escape won’t start. Good Luck on a jumpstart. Instead of a simple jump start, now your Escape will have to be towed to a repair shop. You pay a tow bill and a repair bill too. Plus close to $200 for a new battery. Just pray if and when this moment happens, your prepared.

This was so much easier than the removal of the air box. When replacing the battery, I’d replace the ground BMS cable too. The corrosion they get with time makes it worth doing once so far into the compartment. You also have to do a BMS reset for a new battery.

Thanks a lot for this video. The battery of my 2013 Ford Escape died. The guy who provided the replacement service at home knew the other method and his first comment was that this was not going to be an easy task. When I mentioned your way he was more than willing to give it a try and at the end both of us were happy with the result. He just had a little issue re-aligning the wiper blades, so just make sure to check how they are before removing them. That said, this is my first Ford and for sure will be my last one!

This video saved me a couple of hours and prevented what would undoubtedly be an embarrassing amount of cursing. Like some others, my 2019 Escape needed a 10mm socket instead of an 8mm. The only thing that might have made the video better would have been to show how you need to carefully tilt the battery to slide it in or out of the battery compartment. And like some here, I too needed to adjust my wiper positions after remounting the wiper arms, but the alignment marks on the windshield helped me get it right the second time. Thank you for a very helpful video.

Thank you so much for this helpful video. Without this video, I would not have known how to lift the cowling without breaking the snaps. The only discrepancy I found was that the four bolts holding the drip pan use a 10 mm socket. Also, I did not need to remove a bolt before removing the flexible cowling. That could just be a difference between the 2013 and 2015 models. Unfortunately, I did not keep the wiper arms aligned when I removed them and put them back on. Fortunately, you made a video on how to reset them and it worked great for me 😀

Great video! One problem I encountered was that in removing the wiper arms I ended up rotating the wiper motors shaft(s). When I reinstalled the wiper arms, the wipers were horribly out of sync and did not stop in their correct positions. It took some trail and error of repositioning the arms to correct the problem. I would HIGHLY recommend marking the end of the motor shafts and the wiper arms before removal to allow correct repositioning. :)

Good how to video. I had to do this a couple of weeks ago. Its a shame Ford made it so much trouble to replace the battery. My next vehicle will not be another Escape because of this reason. After I replaced the battery, I did have trouble with the wiper blades being out of sync. I had to watch separate videos on how to calibrate them. Thank you, Ford. Every 3 years I will have to do this procedure. Ford charges $130 for the motocraft battery and $50 to install.

I like the fact he showed the removal points ,the tools and sizes, nothing more aggravating the running back and forth for tools or trying to figure out what’s holding the part unlike other video that just say “remove this or that” I hate the way things have been crammed in under the hood but also understand how much consumers demanded with today’s cars that was either an option or not yet invented, like power steering, air con, front wheel drive transaxles ,pollution systems,,thus we end up with a battery that is a shoe horned fit.

Yes, one can do it. Easily depends on the persons age and how flexible they are. Ford engineers should have their collective asses kicked for such a screw up. Accessing the oil filter isn't that great either if you're a big guy with big hands. Dealers were happy I'm sure with the added work they got from this design.

I just put ford focus rs grimmspeed light weight battery mod in and it fixed all problems. More cold cranking amps smaller battery and easier access to battery. Comes with a odyssey battery. Much better than what ford did. Have to say best 270$ I've spent on my 2015 Ford escape

Very helpful. Thank you for making this video. I watched a few different KZfaq videos and most used the air filter route... where they broke something that way in two of the videos. I followed your video and finished the removal/install with ease in maybe 30 minutes if not less, on my 2016 Escape.

Simple answer. Ford does not want customers working on their own vehicles. Ford prefers you carry your Escape back to a Ford Service Dept. where they can charge you whatever they like. There’s more profit made in the Service Dept. than Sales Dept. now. This was brought on by on line shopping for autos. Very few New Cars sold make a profit now. The profit now is in the Service Department. Been there, wore the T-shirt, till I retired.

This video is great and really helpful, and without taking anything away from that I would suggest watching the airbox method also. I found the latter really quick with just a few (quick) orientation challenges to get the air box out/in. Anyway, all these videos are super helpful and provide you with choices, and to be honest without them i wouldn't know where to start with some jobs that could turn out real bad 😲. Thanks 'How to Escape' 🙂

Hey thanks for leaving the comment! It's funny you mention this! I did try to do the airbox method a few months back as I needed to swap out my battery when it started cooling off weather-wise... our Escape was in the driveway out front and I started recording the steps and then it started pouring rain so I hustled with this wiper removal method as I'm most familiar with it and can do it in a jiffy- I hear you though- you're certainly not the only one recommending we document the airbox method too- thank you very much for the follow up and the suggestion! Happy New Year !

Helpful video. A couple of notes to add. On the 2013 with a 2.0T you need a 10mm deep well to remove the battery hold down and to loosen the battery terminals. Also, at least on mine, even doing all of this, it is not a simple matter of just lifting the battery out once you do all of this. I had to turn the factory battery completely up on end to be able to lift it out. Why in the world they designed thing this way I will never know. This way is still easier than removing the air box, though.

I found it was WAY easier to remove the airbox (and filter) and pull down the side of the battery box. Only took 13mm for ground cable, 10mm for battery posts, and 8mm for battery box. Just my $0.02

Great video. The whole process seemed so daunting, especially just to change the battery, but really wasn't that difficult with the correct tools. Thank you for a very clear, to-the-point video that showed how to do this quickly and fairly painlessly. A few quick notes: based on a different video I watched, I chose to first undo the main cable that runs from the negative battery post to the car (outside the battery enclosure, just to the right of the battery, above the fuse box, as you're working on the car). This is the bolt that is the negative jump point outside the battery enclosure. By unhooking the cable there first, insulating it with a shop towel, and then doing the rest of the battery removal and change, then finally covering the battery in its compartment, and completing the circuit by re-attaching the bolt there, it moved the point where sparks were generated from the top of the battery to a location a foot away, reducing the chance of an explosion if there were gasses from the battery present. Second, and this is minor, as of the date of this comment the description of the video says you need a "Small Philips Driver". I think this meant to say flathead, as shown in the video. Finally, refer to the "Changing the 12v battery" section of the owner's manual for the procedure to follow after doing a battery change, to avoid any Ford surprises. Thanks again for an excellent video!
