I have a 2013 Ford Focus hatchback SE. Mine has the exact same transmission shudder issue. The dealership did a software reflash which improved the issue somewhat. I find that when the transmission starts to shudder, slightly accelerating during the shuddering helps quite a bit.

I experienced this same problem with my 2013 Focus. It wasn't bad at first, but progressively got worse over the course of a year. The car ended up with 3 different engine codes dealing with the clutch fan, clutch accuator, and overheating. God thankfully slapped the 100,000 mile warranty on, so I was able to get the dealership to take care of it. No $ 👍🏻

I have also experienced this. Bought my car in 2013 and in months had to have this issue taken car of. Have also, had this issue happen again not once but two more times also covered by Ford. Lastly, the TCM which the engine light came on and the car jerked while driving on the highway and was losing power. And once again, the car is being locked at due to the grinding this coming week. I really love the vehicle but if I had to actually be responsible to get these things fixed I would be looking at another purchasing vehicle. But so far Ford has been great in stepping up to the plate.

I had one for a rental a few years ago and it stalled out on me a few times... like you, I liked the car itself, but the stalling out problem made it not a very enjoyable experience... told the rental agency about it and they claim they would take it out of service after I returned until they could get it diagnosed, but of course it was back out the next day (this was a local rental office, so I pass by there nearly every day on my way home from work). The car I rented was a 2014 SE Sedan, 2.0L, 6-speed auto... if you're getting one of these, I'd suggest getting either a 1.0T EcoBoost or ST and getting the stick shift.

I have a 2016 Ford Focus hatchback I just got a recall fixed on it. For a gas valve and it seemed to fix the stutter with the transmission. Before I was go about 15 to 20 miles and it felt like it was going to shake or run out of gas. And now I’m dealing with some noise at the dashboard making a rattle sound.

Same issues with my 2016 focus. I’ve sent in a AG complaint, contacted corporate ford more than once, been into more than one dealership, other mechanics told me it’s unsafe to drive now.

My wife's 2013 Focus had this issue from when she bought it. Dealership replaced a part under recall/warranty. The problem went away for a few months. It just came back within the last week or so.

I had the shudder in 2nd.ford replaced the clutch and mod. Been great since and no car comes close to how this car drives. I got my exhaust modded muff delete+after market res and it sounds sexy and has way more power now. I have the 2016 Ford focus se sadan. I love the car and if it messes up once the warranty is through I'll just have it converted to a full manual.

I have the same model and year and having to put mine in the shop because I actually have the check engine light on now with a bad slip in 2nd gear, not to mention it barely moves in reverse. The dealer told me it had 2 weeks left on the warranty when it only had 48600 miles on it and was purchased 5yrs ago(my guess;). I have heard they take out every 50,000 miles so if that’s true, I will be getting rid of it before it happens again.

My 2014 ford focus doesnt take reverse. I had been having problems with the car turning on it seemed as if the battery was dead so i would play between the cars battery and the positive and negative poles to see if it could turn on. Long story short. I drove the car to the mall when i return it wouldnt turn on, when i got the car to turn on after an hour it didnt take reverse. Prior to that though the car was fine and did not have any issues. Ford(Puerto Rico) wants $2800 for the fix. Im at a crossroads because i have the money but it just doesnt feel like it should take that much. If someone could advise with proper course of action i would gratefully appreciate it!

I have a 2012 SEL and my car malfunctioned on the freeway and I lost all power. Almost causing a 3 car pileup. Talked to ford and they said it was fine and it was a computer glitch... still having issues and they haven't done anything. They said mines just fine. I'll never buy another one of these. I worked really hard to get this and to have it crap out on me at under 50k miles on it is beyond ridiculous! Hopefully yours got looked at. Thanks for the share.

Mine does the same thing and recently the whole engine completely shut off while driving I pulled over and turned it off tried to start and wouldn't start the first time started the 2nd time and check engine light came on , started driving and it did it again this time I let it sit for a while and was finally able to get home I was about 70 miles away when I finally got home I turned my car off and back on and check engine light stayed off I don't what the issue is.....

I have a 2012 SE. I had the clutch replaced and I still get grinding noises in 1st and 2nd gears. The car doesn't really shutter anymore so I guess its as good as it gets with this transmission. The biggest issue I had early on was with the TCM that died but that was replaced and hopefully won't go bad again. Overall a nice car that makes grinding noises at times lol

I had a rumbling issue at take off with my 2015 Focus I previously had and it was the shudder and it was covered under Warranty and my current 2018 is doing the same. And I know someone who drives Honda Accords who had a automatic transmission loaner accord rumble and his regular Accord is a manual. Its too bad manual transmissions are not as popular now days. However I am most likely trading in the Focus for a Jeep Cherokee sometime this year as my family owns a vacation home that requires crossing a shallow river to get to and I need a vehicle with a high Clearance to do so. Although depending on how much I save up by summer I may get a Ranger. But most likely I'm getting a Jeep Cherokee.

Focus 2013 Have experience the car "lurching" when when putting car into park before, then this am, car wouldn't go into reverse. Could shift into drive and back to park. Unfortunately, just over 100,000. :(

Have the same issue it also shudders when accelerating. Ford fixed the transmission but a couple months later it started shuddering again and still does. So now it broke again and when u try to speed up while cruising it will hesitate and it will just rev like in neutral then after a couple seconds it will shift and go. It also makes noises. And for some reason it's so weird but it only shutters the second time u start it and after. Every day the first time we drive the car the transmission is fine but when u start it a second time and more then it shutters I don't get that.

I just got my 2014 today. going from the dealer I noticed this, especially going around a corner from stopped position. I wonder if I should ask the dealership about it?? probably!!

hey..I bought my car used from a family owned dealership in August 2016...completely un aware of this issue..had 57,000 miles. Took it to the Ford dealership because I was getting that same iffy stutter when driving..they safe the Transmission Control Modue on my car needed to be updated. Other the so-called update, I did notice that the car was driving normal up until now (June 2017).

No shudder just erratic shifting sometimes gonna do the clutch scrub here soon because new clutch packs were installed shortly before I got it

I have a 2014 Focus and my Dash says Transmission fault which on google goes to TCM transmission control module which ford says they will replace for Free if all I pay is the 118$ for them to check the car out. Which I also get the Transmission over heating light aswell car does make a stutter type sound as you mention from 1/2 gear but that’s all also doesn’t go over 45 mph in 3rd gear

The shudder is because of the way most the time you control acceleration. If you are the type to accelerate then back off before it hits the next shift it will jolt a bit. So if it’s at 2500 rpms say and you are approaching say 25 mph but you back off the rpms a bit before it can make the next shift it will jolt a bit. Too fix that just hold the accelerator little longer until that shift completed then you can back off on the accelerator

Where can I get the transmission fluid Dual clutch?

Issues are: 1. check Engine Iight 2. Car won't move forward or reverse. 3. Turn car off and eventually hear scratching sounds for 4 seconds, as if something is being reset with the computer. Also had issues with the car not properly starting, yet lights and radio went on no issues. 4. After the scratching reset noise goes away I turn the car back on and off and away I'm able to go. 5. Noticed the car slipping into gear (not sure if it went up or down, happens to fast for me to notice). 6. One time I was at light pressed the pedal, it went forward all of a few feet and then it just stopped moving. Car is at near 65K miles, is it time to change transmission fluid? Do I have a bad started? New gas bump? Help!!!

I've got a 2016 does the same thing. Sport edition, 4 door. A beauty but a bitch to drive when she shudders, grinds & etc. I hate it! But I'm glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing the issue. I didn't know this prior to purchase but I think I'll be contacting my dealer to see what I can do about this because it is getting worse.

After the TCM recall re-flash, then two clutch adjuster failures, I'm feeling like it's a design problem that they are just gonna "fix" until the various warranties expire, THEN you are toast, it will fail forever. Opt out of the class action suit on this, then after 3 failures get a lemon law layer to go after them.

I just bought a 2013 focus s sedan .It had only 43,000 miles on it .Like you said its a nice sporty car .After I drove it the transmission started to skip or jerk 2-3 times ,before it shifted . I just to another ride about ten miles.Sure enough the car jerked ,slightly .It occured from starting off from first to second . I'm going to call the dealer wed. and ask him if I could take it back ,he had a 2012 Corrola with 140,000 for just $1,000 more . If he doesn't take it back ,how long do you think I would have before the Transmission failed ? I read something ,that stated if it was between 2011 and 2016and had less than 100,000 miles on it Ford would replace for free. Have you heard anything about that ? I guess I need to call Ford ..One last thing the dealer steered me toward the Focus over the 2012 corolla

I have a 2013 TDCI ford focus, gearbox was replaced 3x already due to shuttering "'Transmission limited Function' this message appear's when shuttering starts. This year June 2019, same problem started again, just when warranty was over with one month. Ford does not want to help at all, saying we should replace it ourselves, but the quote is way more then what the car actually costs now. car has been parked for all most 3 months now, we just let it idle every second day, for battery not to run out. I have a 2014 hatch and my car was bad but it got worse and worse to the point of stalling. Ford replaced my clutch is June and ever since you cannot feel it jerking at all after 5 thousand more miles of driving. I know others haven't been so lucky with the replacement but I believe the 2016 clutch makes a huge difference vs the previous ones

I just recently purchased a 2013 focus titanium. I absolutely love the car but notice a funny noise. At first I thought it was just some rusty brake rotors from the car sitting. Anyone who has experienced this sound know what I speak of. Kind of like a grinding noise, but once you drive the car a bit the rotors get used and the sound will eventually go away. Well this is not my case. I hear it more so at slow speeds. It stops when I stop at a red light, but here's the odd part. Once I let go of the brake pedal the sound would start up, even before I hit the accerelator. So I am almost certain it's something spinning inside the transmission because doesn't the clutch engage once you take your foot off the brake? Anyone else here know what I speak off? Oh and yes the car is an automatic.. I would of purchased stick but I couldn't find one in titanium model anywhere local.

this is exactly what happened on my 2012 focus. the gear sticks to the 2nd, so the max speed was 60km/h. whatever how hard i pressed the accelerator, it didn't change anything.

My son has a 2012. He turned his car on and the engine light and the transmission malfunction light came on. He was driving it and it like went into neutral on its own while driving! Is this the same situation as you had?

The first time I brought it into the dealership they had to replace the clutch assembly. 2 months later the throw out bearing broke and damage the clutch, I had to pay $350 luckily the dealership paid 33% and Ford paid 33%. About 2 weeks later the engine light turned on and the transmission was acting up again, it would get to second gear and stay there, I would go no more than 20mph. I made my way back to the dealership( thank god it was down the road from work) they kept it for about a week. Dealership called said they had to replace the TCM. NOW, about two days ago, I was going down the highway, came to a completed at a redlight, and the RPMs were revving up to 2000 by it's self, but as soon I let off the brake it stopped. It did that all the way to work. Once i got off from started my car it ran normal, but I have a feeling that the clutch is going to start slipping again. I only had this car for a year, but once it hits 100k or sooner I'm trading it in.

The First Problem was buying the power shift automatic, not the MTX75 manual transmission. I love my Focus Se Hatch Single Clutch 5 speed manual.

In April of 2015, I purchased a used 2013 Ford Focus from the dealership. It had 3530 miles on it at the time. It had been a "company" car. In September of 2015, the Transmission Control Module was Reprogrammed and the clutch adaptive learning procedure was performed. (This was a recall.) In April of 2016, I had to replace both axle boots (on each side of the front axle) because they were "busted." (The dealerships word.) Originally I was told that it would be in excess of $900 for this work. I pitched a fit and was finally charged $614.62. I was told by the mechanic at the dealership that the boots probably dry rotted. My question: Have you ever had the the axle boots on ANY car, no matter the age, dry rot? In early 2017, Safety recall for replacement of side door latches. In January 2017, I began having problems with the automatic transmission. The transmission was shuddering upon take off. Extensive work was done under the warranty granted by Ford due to the problems with this make and model of car. In October 2017, I began having the same problem with the automatic transmission. The transmission shudders upon take off. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to take the car into the dealership AGAIN.

YOu should have tried accelerating up to about 25, back to 15, THEN accelerate. Shudders PLENTY then...

It's a dual clutch automated manual transmission. Not a conventional automatic you might be familiar with. A dual clutch is basically a manual transmission controlled electronically by a computer. Its purpose is to give you the fuel economy advantage of a manual, but the convenience of an automatic. The jerky takeoffs and grinding noises are completely normal. I have a 2015 Focus and it's not that bad once you get use to it.

My sister commutes to school in her 2012 ford focus. All of a sudden she got a "Transmission overheating please pull over" on her car in heavy bumper to bumper traffic. The car has also been shuddering. But after she got that message the car stalled, almost like it shifted into neutral, and engine revved up without moving. She had to shut off the car and turn it back on and everything appeared normal. As you said these cars are iffy and do this at random. We took it to the Ford dealership and they said everything was normal and did a software update. I'm afraid that since this problem keeps happening randomly they wont be able to duplicate it and fix it properly, instead of just a software update. After your clutch replacement was this problem fixed? Can you trade a car in even if it is not paid off, as she only bought the car a year ago.

My gfriend bought this same car and I've noticed that turning traction control off eliminates the problem, but this could just be a fluke that only works with ours. 112k miles.

Omg my car just went out!! I was in the driveway and I went to get in the car and I barely touched on the handle and there was a massive loud popping literally it sounded like fireworks and it also sounded like gunfire and that lasted for about 20 seconds obviously I shut the door and ran inside but then the next day when I came back out I tried to open the car door and there was no sound so it up and find the car started fine but none of the instrument panel was working like you could back the car out and it would drive but the speedometer wasn’t working none of the instruments and the navigation sync unit was also not working it wasSo I just popped on here and I’m going to watch your video right now my car is in the shop it’s been there for two days they claim they haven’t had a chance to look at it they’re doing diagnostics and they don’t know what’s wrong with it oh my God
