I've been looking at, and thinking about, the Harley Iron 883 for some time now. I've thought they were cool since they came out in 2009. After buying a used XL1200L Sportster last year, it's really got me thinking about the Iron again. Went up to Northwest Harley-Davidson in Lacy, Wa. yesterday just to look, and was talked into taking one for a test ride. Well I almost rode her home, but couldn't quite get to terms with the price. So I came home to think this over before jumping right in and taking it...
I love the idea of this small, simple, rough & tough little bike. Very drab looking, so it doesn't scream "Look at me!" or "Watch how fast I can go!" It reminds me of the UJM's of the '70's & '80's. Love this bike... I will absolutely get one of these Iron 883's!
As for the test ride, it was awesome! I really thought it was going to feel under powered, but that was not the case at all. Even though I was given very strict restrictions on how to treat the new motor, she performed very well within those parameters. I still can't believe they have test rides like this for customers - how cool!

Just saw your video for the first time. Bravo for your enthusiasm for the Sportster. I will have been riding a Sportster for 50 years next month. I've owned many metrics and various Harley BTs, but always had a Sportster also. I have sold all of my other bikes over the years, but have settled on my 2006 Sportster Roadster. The only other bike I would trade it for today is a 2007+ FI Roadster. It fits me and my riding style perfectly. Thanks again for your videos.

I couldn't agree with you more Richard! There is something about the Sportsters that just draws you in. I've owned a bazillion bikes over the years, and get to ride all the fancy new bikes as they come through our dealership, but I choose to purchase and ride Sportsters. Much to the dismay of my coworkers, I might add. But as I'm sure you know, they just don't get it! They have know idea what they're missing... Thanks for watching and the awesome comment! rsmf

Alan Troy Posted: "how well does the bike cruise between 70-75MPH? I heard it's not good running them over 70 MPH for a long ride. I'm looking into getting an Iron 883, but i'm afraid it won't be able to handle long rides at 70-75MPH. So i'm stuck between an Iron or a Forty Eight." Hi Alan, the system won't let me reply to your post! Hopefully you'll see this... The Iron handles 70-80 MPH without a hitch! There's a sweet spot at 75 that is wonderful. You could go cross country at these speeds and never hurt anything... With the lower gearing of an 883, I think it is running about 600 RPM's higher at 70 MPH than a 1200. Thanks for watching Alan!

You can up grade the 883 engine to a 1200 and it will just fine, it's a 1,500.00 up grade but well worth it.. I was told this by the dealer here in Michigan.,Wolverine HD dealer.. My son wants one and I went to check it out..The dealer told me for long rides you might want to up grade to a Super Glide.. But anyway everyone has their won reason for what they want and like.. good luck..

My advise is buy a ricer with fully adjustable suspension, bags, and 10x more power. The HD has the worst suspension, hp, and handling of any bike on the road. On top of that it's slow. And why buy an upgrade when you can just get the 1200 skirtster to begin with LOL.

Hahahaha, nothing like a Harley buddy...So stick with your skirtster and leave me with the better over all Bike recognized in the entire World, and it doesn't lose it's value....HARLEY DAVIDSON...#1 PERIOD...

I have a 2009 Iron883, I absolutely love it. I always have and I probably always will. I am a little over 300lbs and has never had any issues hauling my fat a$$ around. I have ridden it from Sharon, Pa to Cooksville Tn. (13 hours at 75mph) and it never had any problems, I'm not saying I didn't have any problems on that trip..... By the time I got there I couldn't walk, really wish I had a windshield on her for that trip....lol I have recently (2 weeks ago) done the SE 1200 Conversion, she really has power now, its unbelievable how different the power is. I wanted a 1200 from the start, but didn't like the look of the nightster (Grey Engine and Spoked Wheels) I wanted the "Black-Out" look and I love the Black/Silver aluminum wheels. All in All, you will be very pleased with this bike. Everyone loves this bike, I got it the first year it came out (in the 883 version anyways) and I always got compliments on it. Every from all the guys that "chrome out" and wax there bikes daily.

I've seen the comments about the fingers on the clutch and brake levers. In my book, those are good habits! It takes time to uncurl one's fingers and move them to the levers. A speed of 70 mph is 103 feet per second. Assuming a person has impossibly superhuman reflexes and can move their fingers into position from the grips in 0.1 seconds, that's still going to put you 10 feet into that radiator / trunk / deer when compared to keeping your fingers on the levers. More realistically, it's going to take more like 0.5 seconds or 50 feet to move your fingers. Remember, your fingers get a little stiff from keeping a grip and so you have to let go before you can move to the levers.

seeing you ride that 883 down the interstate brings back harsh memories lol. My first bike was a 2003 Harley 883 that was solid mounted to the frame. Went on a 400 mile trip from kentucky to missouri and it about killed me. 70mph had a annoying constant buzz that went thru your whole body. thank god for rubber mounts huh

I'm with you on that! Your bike's got to fit! The "smallness" of the Iron surprised me because, as you walk up to it, it doesn't seem so little. Once you're in the saddle, the damn thing almost disappears! I'm 5' 8". For me, the smallness works; for you ... not so much!

I wouldn't hesitate for a second recommending an Iron to a beginner. It's a bike that any rider can enjoy! I've been riding for 42 years, and work with very powerful, high speed bikes almost daily, and I purchased an Iron as a personal bike. Enjoying the ride isn't all about the specs of a bike... Just a speedo with all the normal indicator lights. The 2014 model can display a tachometer & gear position in the LCD now...

5'8"... The bike is comfortable, but the low cut seat makes the mid-mount pegs almost seem too cramped. I can go a couple hours before the seat starts to get uncomfortable, but that's about the fuel stop time, so you get a reset on the buttocks... I want to do something with the seat, just not sure what yet. Thanks for viewing and commenting! - Shawn

I've thought about doing something wild like that... We've had a few customers this year come through that were touring on Sportsters. Had a couple from Canada come through on a 1987 XL883 that were heading to Yellowstone. They were loaded down and riding two up... The bikes are more than reliable and capable! Nope, no struggles... We went through this whole speech about not lugging or revving over 4K before taking off. Then, they just took off on the ramp and onto I-5. I was just keeping it within what I thought was 4K rpm, then didn't go over 80mph because the lower gearing of the 883 may be at that rpm at that speed... And yes, they're quite smooth at freeway speeds. The leader was on a Switchback. Like the one we have, she says it tank slaps over 80mph, kinda freaky! Thanks for viewing! - Shawn

I don't know if it's proper etiquette or not, but it's a habit that I developed years ago. I think in may have come from all the dirt and road racing, along with doing stupid stuff off the track. There is a noticeable difference between the two, but the 883 is so much fun to ride, I don't really give it much thought... The Iron 883 is close to 60 HP and the 1200's are around 80 HP (both in stock form). Thanks for watching and commenting!

Not at all. In fact, it allows additional oil to flow through the plates, as they're not under pressure. This could actually help in heavy stop and go traffic by cooling the plates. It's your hand getting tired that may be an issue at that point... Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks Sid S ! The performance of the Iron is just fine, even bone stock! If you've ever ridden the pre 2007 carbureted 883's, these EFI models are a world apart in performance... As far as belts breaking? Well, that's just an old wives tale still alive from the '80's. Belt's breaking are very rare indeed. They are a very efficient, clean, quiet & reliable final drive system, hence their popularity among manufacturers. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I'm thinking of getting an Iron for the same reasons you mentioned. I'm just a little unsure if I can enjoy it, living in L.A., with limited options to ride on nice highways like you have up there.

Love the video, and I greatly appreciate the feedback that you give in the comments section. I plan on making this my first motorcycle that I own… You know, when I'm done with all of this whale hunting.

Do you think a used iron 883 would be a good first bike or would something like a street 750 be better?

Ive never ridden a bike before or had a desire to or own one but for some reason i do now. Would this bike be good for a new rider as a starter bike? I am 6'2 if that matters

The 883 is a good beginner bike, yes. Mainly because it is so easy to ride, and the power is mellow enough not to scare a beginner. But, it's still fast enough to have fun when your skills increase. The 883 is a small, but not in comparison to old bikes of the 60's and 70's. Therefore, being 6'2" should not be a problem. I am 6' tall, and have ridden my friend's 883 before, and I thought it was a blast to ride. I own a Suzuki V-strom 1000, which is large and tall, and is much faster and more comfortable. But there is just something cool about a Harley, it feels like a pure machine, not a plastic rice burner like my Suzuki.

I'm getting one soon...Great bike, and if it costs 9000 Euros, you can sell it two years later for more or less the same price. Try to do that with another brand!

It will keep up to traffic but if a big twin wants to run from ya, it will. I'll be putting a 1250 kit into mine and it should run well against most other Harleys then (maybe even a sport bike or 2). As it is now, I load my 2010 down with camping gear and still pass cars when I want.

is the 883 iron hard to maintain? I mean like, taking care of the engine. Does it have problems?
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 10 жыл бұрын
There simply couldn't be an easier motorcycle to maintain! Only basic tools required to perform scheduled maintenance. You never have to adjust valves, sync throttle bodies, etc. So engine maintenance is nothing more than oil changes, plugs, air filter, primary chain and clutch adjustments. Very basic! As far as problems, do some searching for yourself, you'll see that Sportsters are legendary throughout their history for being stone reliable. Thanks for watching and commenting Tony!
