2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Review: High Torque, Modest Price

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is in a class of its own in the US. While the regular Jetta is a solid (but less reliable) German alternative to the Civic and Corolla, the TDI model offers a driving experience that is rarely found in small cars.
CORRECTION: In the beginning, I said that VW bought back all diesels but it was not mandatory. They offered it to all of the owners whose cars were affected by the recall.
Things I should mention:
- Horsepower = torque x (RPM/5252)
- Volkswagen highly recommends a transmission fluid and filter change with the DSG (automatic) every 40,000 miles.
- The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are more consistent in reliability but the Jetta TDI comes with an impressive warranty that eases the mind when buying a pre-owned vehicle.
- After the emissions modification, the Jetta TDI manual was rated at 32 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
- The 2015 Jetta TDI has 150 hp.
Thank you Drew Walker for helping shoot this review!

Wow, an honest, objective and fair review of the Jetta - congrats! People seem to hate or love VW's, depending. That little snappy-dressing worm at 2theRedline or whatever he calls his channel doesn't like the Jetta much. WHAT DOES HE KNOW! I love mine. I'm an Uber/Lyft driver. I had a Dodge Caravan that was eating me alive in gas. So I went looking for a hybrid, but I hate hybrids, so I remembered the VW TDi. Long story short, I found a smoking deal on a loaded 2012 (the dealer had three of them). And damn, I loooooove this car! You're so right about the TORQUE!! It's amazing. On the highway, when I go to pass someone I just press down and - zoom! - it goes! My TDi gets 40 on the highway and 30 in town - I'm loving it! My passengers compliment me on the car all the time. My Jetta better last a long time, because I don't ever intend to get rid of it.

GLlad you are enjoying your Jetta! It was sad to see the Jetta TDI go, now if want extra torque, then you have to go with a GLI. Maybe we'll see an electric Jetta here soon and that could fill the gap, only time will tell. Thank you for the feedback!

I love my 2015 TDI with 6 speed manual. They did introduce a newer TDI for that year only (thanks to dieselgate) that has a 10 HP bump. Tons of torque, the mileage is incredible, and it's fun to drive. Even after the fix, I don't really notice any difference other than it does re-gens a little more often.

When I was part owner of photography/videography services company, the company bought a Jetta TDI Sportwagen. The station wagon body solved the rear headroom issue with a longer roof line. I was skeptical of the TDI engine at first. The car came with the automatic transmission by accident which made me very happy as I do not drive a stick and really did not want to learn. The first major test of the Sportwagen was my business part and I with equipment headed west out of Denver. This car had a six speed automatic. As we were headed out at night, I set the cruise control to the legal limit and wait for the car to bog down. It NEVER did. We started uphill and it dropped in to fifth and just kept going. As the mountains got higher and steeper, it dropped into fourth and just kept going. With the turbocharger altitude was not an issue. I just purchased a turbocharged Subaru Legacy Sport to deal with the elevation. Elevation and steep hills were never an issue, even when we overloaded it. The TDI had the torque and the gears to stay at the legal limit no matter what. If VW made a cost competitive AWD version, I might be driving one today. Temperature (MINUS 11 degree this morning) might be an option with diesel fuel. There are very few diesel automobiles in Colorado but LOTS and LOTS of diesel trucks so people must figure out how to deal with the cold. When I drove the TDI, I got 39 mpg highway. When my business partner drive he got about 32 mpg highway but arrived sooner. The car was very comfortable and we typical drove 12 to 16 hours at a stretch.

@@kentgabriel3572 It looks slick, just like the previous generation, they made it look racey without looking ricey. Plus it's got a ton of torque and they kept the manual option, hopefully it handles as good as the last GLI did. I sincerely doubt any wagon form of it but good news is that they make a GTI so you can still get a hatchback! (They are supposed to redesign the golf here soon too). So far it seems promising, a review with it will be my top priority once we get one in.

I bought a brand new Jetta TDI and the next month they did the big announcement about VW fudging the numbers on emissions but the car still ran great and diesel fuel prices were very good also at that time close to the price of gas as I remember. Next thing I know VW is giving me money, $500 Visa card and then $500 I could spend at VW and after that they announced the buy back. Since I had the car less than a year and put under 20K miles on it I would make out like a bandit on the buy back and not lose a nickle. The car ran great and on the highway drive I did 50 to 51 MPG and around town about 40 MPG as I remember with an automatic but I talked myself into taking the buyback and I bought a Honda Accord which I have been driving now since May 2017 and it's a great car but I do miss the Jetta at times, especially on the long highway drives and 50-51 MPG.
@Realistick
@Realistick 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, you really bought one at the right time, the jetta TDI has such a different driving experience from everything else in the US so I see why you might miss it at times. The Accord is still fun for a family sedan though and is probably cheaper to maintain and whatnot but that mpg and the torque in the jetta is awesome. Glad to hear you got out of diesel gate ahead!

a week into driving a 2012 Jetta TDI, looks like 40mpg over 400 miles, though much of it was highway and I got a low-power 105HP 1.6 so it needs a bit of throttle to cruise at 85mph - expect even better mileage on standard open roads - other than that it's got a really handsome interior and it's really easy and relaxing to drive - does feel a bit detached though, but then again it's my first diesel so I guess I gotta get used to that small lag - once it wakes up it pulls nicely and the steering, while a bit light for my taste, isn't vague at all...

what do you mean do the turbos not last could you explain
@azaz911c
@azaz911c 3 жыл бұрын
@@shanepereira. The diesel engine itself (block/pistons) is quite trouble free and may last for 100,000's of kms with difficulty, if serviced with proper oil changes and timing belt / water pump replacements. The turbocharger system, while still durable, may be the least robust engine component, in part because it operates under extreme conditions. The turbocharger vanes spin at extremely high speed (100,000 rpm+). This increases the risk of two potential failure points: the bearings that allow the vanes to rotate, or damage to the vanes should they impact foreign material. The turbocharger also operates at very high temperatures, and can overheat if oil lubrication is compromised. The turbocharger also has an electronically-controlled waste gate solenoid/actuator that controls the turbocharger. Like any moving component, and electronic device, it can break or stop moving properly over time. If one plans on using the car for 100,000's of kms, it would not be surprising if the turbocharger had to be serviced or replaced during that interval. It can be pricey to repair (which is generally true for most VW components if you are in North America). For these reasons, I personally prefer non-turbocharged engines if the priority is on low operating costs over the long term. The fuel-efficiency gains of a turbocharged engine may be offset by the potential costs of turbocharger failure. Still, I don't think this is a reason to not buy a VW TDI; it's just something to be aware of, particularly if one is buying a used one with higher kms.

I would buy VWs because of their diesel engines. I've owned a 1980 VW Rabbit diesel (48 MPG), a 1982 VW Rabbit diesel (55 MPG), a 1986 VW Golf Diesel (not sure about the MPG), A 2006 VW Beetle TDI (52 MPG), and I now have a 2012 VW Jetta TDI.(I gave the 2006 Beetle to my daughter to give to her step daughter.) You made an incorrect statement....you said that due to the "Diesel Gate" scandal, VW bought back all of their diesel vehicles. That's not true. What they did was to give the owners of these vehicles the option to sell them back to VW, or, to have an emission modification done to our vehicles. I opted for the emission modification. There was no way that I was going to sell my Jetta back to VW. I bought it new in 2012, and it's 8 years old, and only has 26,000 miles on it (If I were to sell it back to them back then, they offered me $23,000 for it, since it had very low mileage on it.). It's also a 6 speed manual.(I always buy manual transmissions, if they are offered.) I have found that, at least for my VW diesel engines, they don't get broken in until after 30,000 miles, and that's when the MPH goes up. Right now my Jetta is getting 40 MPG around town. I hardly ever drive on expressways, so I don't know what the highway MPG is. Remember, this is a family sedan, not a sports car, so it's not going to handle like a sports car, but having said that, it handles really well, considering that it is a family sedan. Back in 2012, I decided to buy a car with a trunk, since my VW Beetle was a hatchback. My son-in-law had just bought a new Chevy Cruze, and since I was a retired GM worker, I figured that the Cruze would be just what I needed. I wanted to buy the VW Jetta TDI, but the Cruze was cheaper, so I opted for that, and added it alongside my VW Beetle TDI. I had that Cruze for 6 months and traded it in on the Jetta. The Cruze was a piece of junk! Like you mentioned...the Jetta has plenty of torque, so at a low RPM, you can step on the throttle, and it accelerates. The Cruze doesn't. When driving home from the food store, I was on a country road that had an incline that was a bit steep. Driving the Jetta, I just left it in gear and pushed down on the throttle. With the Cruze, I would be in 6th gear as I approached that incline, and as I started up the incline, it would slow down. I'd push the gas pedal to the floor, but that didn't help, so I would downshift into 5th gear. That didn't help. I then downshifted to 4th gear. That didn't help, I downshifted to third gear. That didn't help. I finally downshifted to 2nd gear, and I had to keep the gas pedal floored, just to maintain my speed. As you can see from what I said above about the Jetta being 8 years old and only having 26,000 miles on it, that I don't drive much. Well, when I had the Beetle, I drove that to work every day. When I retired, I bought the Jetta, so I don't have to drive to work anymore, so my driving is usually just to the grocery store, the bank, the post office, or once in a great while, to my daughter's house. As long as this Jetta doesn't start having problems, I will keep it forever. It's a great car. I just hope that VW decides to begin bringing their diesel cars back into the US, but it sounds as if they won't be doing that any time soon.

Just bought a 2011 TDI Sportswagen with DSG trans. with 30500 on the clock. The car is in pristine condition and I am so far very satisfied with it. I purchased an additional 4-year bumper-to-bumper warranty to cover other components that can deteriorate after sitting in a mega storage lot for several years. I knew I wanted one with low mileage and in excellent condition. After looking countrywide for what I wanted, I ironically found one at my local VW dealer at a decent (not great) price. It's a diamond in the rough. Word to the wise...AVOID the ones with sunroofs as they leak like a sieve (one I test drove on a rainy day got me soaking wet).

How much did you pay? Is 13,900 for a 2013 with 23k miles a good deal for tdi sportwagen?

Meissnerflux sounds good to me. Paid 12k for a 2012 tdi with the premium package and 42k miles

A better and quicker alternative is the 2014/15 2.0 LUZ Chevrolet Cruze diesel. It'll do 34-38 city and easily over 50 MPG on the highway. Range is nearly 750 per rank in highway run at 75 MPH.

Those things do have an insane amount of torque, and they ride well like the Jetta but the Cruze is a maintenance monster (typically, do a quick Google) and doesn't come with the impressive warranty of the Jetta TDI. To say either one is definitively better would be an overreach as someone who doesn't care about the extra 30 pound feet of torque might care about the added dependability and the warranty and vice versa.

They didn’t come with a dct though, so the manual will be the way to go

Considered buying one for work commute but head room just isn’t there. Love to own one but I’d need to be more comfortable.

Realistick I’m only 6’1” but I have a long torso which is where most of my height is. Plus Jetta I sat in had a moonroof and it just wasn’t as comfortable as I’d liked. I sat in a Ford Focus that was roomier.

@@sokodad Interesting, it's not for everyone, I have long legs so maybe that's why I didn't have issues. If you want diesel, the golf tdi has an inch more of headroom than the jetta.

Realistick that’s what salesman said too. He just didn’t have one in a diesel on his lot.

Realistick I know the seat was a little different to use than the domestics I own so maybe I didn’t have it adjusted correctly. I had plenty of leg room but I couldn’t get seat to lay back enough to get my head off the ceiling.

My review of your review! It's humorously obvious that your not a diesel fan. That being said, people like diesels because you don't have to "rev the tits off them" as John Cadogan would say. That's what people who really like diesel's appreciate, the low torque. Other's(Petrol Lovers) love to hear them lil squirrels scream @ the top of the rev range to get any usable power.

I don't know where you get that impression, I love diesels in regular cars! I only criticized this car for having a rubbery shifter that made the powertrain feel more soul-less than I would have preferred. I love low end torque in commuter type vehicles, especially in any truck
