In this video we are replacing a timing kit on a 2014 Honda Accord Sport with the Earth Dream Engine V4. The timing chain tensioner in this vehicle has begun to fail which cause the timing chain to skip a few teeth. In order to fix this problem we installed a new timing chain kit. This new tensioner installed the chain was tight again and ready to go for another 100,000 miles.

Timing chains on these cars are supposed to last the life of the engine. I just replaced my timing chain tensioner at 100K because my timing chain was making a rattle on cold startup for about a micro-second. I replaced the cam tensioner and the rattle is gone. Honda has issued a TSB fix for this problem. If not done, it could cause the timing chain to skip a few teeth.

I replaced my timing chain tensioner because I was getting that rattle. The rattle was gone for a while but seemed to have come back.

Usually replacing the VTC actuator spring and the timing chain tensioner in these ones does the trick. Easy job. $35 vtc kit and $60 for the 5A2-02 tensioner. 2 hours tops. Spring-Start VTC.

How much would you charge for this for labor if I brought all the parts for a job like this? I'm starting to get a noise from the timing chain area

Got to keep engine oil clean or inside of the tensioner gets gummed up.

My camshafts are also misaligned, how do you know when they are aligned? I am finding it difficult to clearly see where the arrow on the VTC actuator is suppose to be and where the dot for the exhaust cam is suppose to be. Do you just line up the hash marks on each sprocket so that they align with each other in the middle? Do I need to move the crankshaft so that no pistons are at TDC before adjusting the camshafts to their proper alignment? Sorry for all the questions but I want to get this correct. Thanks.

Are you using new chain? With the old chain it can be hard to see the color marks cause they can be faded. I am always adjusting the crankshaft or camshaft to whatever position it needs to be in in order to match up to the color link

2014 Honda sport has 130K miles and will yank forward on a cold start. If it doesn’t yank, it makes a squeeky noise. There is no engine light and it runs smooth after it warms up. Your thoughts?

Could be potentially tensioner wearing out. Really never really know for sure until you step on the gas too hard and all of sudden you get a engine light for camshaft over retarded. To prevent that is to go ahead and be on top of the known common engine problem. I think you should swap it

My cover for the timing chain has sludge on the outside near the top of it do you know what could be leaking there?

It could be a bad VTC oil control solenoid gasket or a leaking valve cover gasket.

I would use a timing kit but maybe just replacing the tensioner only is fine

@@kimbion I changed the tensioner already and I hear my timing chain clicking still, I believe it may be stretch due to driving on a bad tensioner over time

@@kimbionwhat procedure did you use to remove the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) bolt? Working on one at work and put a 4 ft pole on a breaker bar and still wouldn’t come loose.

@@braydenkeller2421 You are right the harmonic balancer bolts on these Honda's are extremely tight. Normally my impact gets all harmonic bolts out. What I did was use my breaker bar. I place it against the control arm and then I cranked the engine a few times. And it easily came out from there.

I stuck a pin in the old tensioner then just unbolted it
