I love the long video, Brian. Longer gives a more detailed look at the issue(s) confronting you. A superb teaching situation!

I think you made the right call Brian. No way that the pcm should be commanding that relay to turn always. Nothing is shorted either. I’d install a new relay just for good measure.

Brian thanks for sharing. You answered my question from last class on WiFi service. They all seem to have issues. I’m going to watch it again so I have a clearer picture in my brain. I’m sure you have already solved the problem. 👍

Make sure to check pin 85 of the relay or the Yell/blk wire with a test light. I have seen 12v before with a multimeter and it's normal. Use a test light instead.

I will try that when I get back to it, I think depending on the test light it may light dimmly. Another thing I should have done is check the current flow with an amp clamp. In the experimenting I am doing for the follow up videos I am seeing many of the relays I am messing with draw around 100-200mA @ 13 volts, and the secondary side staying closed with as little as 65mA @ < 2 volts. This is a fun learning experience. Thanks for watching as always!

i am going to take a guess and say its a relay that has seen better days. powered up shorted relay keeping points together. when you unplugged it makes points open making light go off. but i could be wrong.

I'm concerned with the voltage om the primary side. I will probably get a new relay for good measure and test as well

How would you warranty this, or would you? You said you replaced this ecm for a no crank a while back and now it's an always crank. The regular customer will say you didn't do something write. Great video!

It is a rough situation for sure, the 1st shop is warranting the pcm for the second shop that the vehicle was at. Both shops are trying to do what is right and fair for the customer. I did not diag the 1st time around , just programming. I am not sure if it's just an odd coincidence or is something else going on here.

Clearly the pcm is the issue.
@mrblonde2013
@mrblonde2013 10 ай бұрын
Question: at the end of the diag you called a pcm, how could you tell the difference between a pcm issue ( driver, capacitor , internal circuit) or an external issue ( shorted wiring or sensor/actuator) to that pcm? Thanks Brian.
@BrianMann216
@BrianMann216 10 ай бұрын
I am basing that off the crank request and command at the pcm, and the fact that we do get proper voltage when going to the crank position. Cant wait for the warranty PCM to arrive to find out !

I wonder : Would a little test light paralell to the Primary Side of the Relay pull down the Voltage enogh that the Relay shuts back off , even with the 1,8V from the Computer side ?
@BrianMann216
@BrianMann216 10 ай бұрын
That's a great idea, I was thinking of a resistor, maybe 300ohms or so to see what happens . Still waiting for a ecm.

Could the fuse block possibly have corrosion in it? With key on fuse block alive you get 12 volts relay unplugged. But when you turn the key shutting off power to the fuse block the 12 volts goes away. Plus the coverage drop when you plug the relay back in screams corrosion in fuse block. Is that a printed circuit board fuse block or just connectors.

Voltage drop. Not coverage drop lol.

i wish auto manufacturers could understand some systems do not need computer to start. Push to start was back in the 1950's no computer. and many years after ign switch did the job just fine with out a computer. some parts of a vehicle should remain simple and we wouldn't have these problems. someone steals your radio on a new vehicle and now you can't drive home radio shouldn't have anything to do with the running of a vehicle Tech has gotten out of hand
