But unlike some other new cars that can park themselves, the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee can parallel parking and even park itself in a perpendicular parking space. In another fun and informative TFLcar tech demo (part 2) check it out as Emme gets behind the wheel of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee as it parks itself in a perpendicular parking space. It may seem a bit strange to see the car's steering wheel turn by itself but that's the start of the brave new world of autonomous cars that do all of the driving work for you.

the exterior design of the Cherokee is actually starting to grow on me. Actually looks descent in that color and that particular trim level.

why all the criticism for this technology? if you dont need it or dont like it, then dont buy it or use it. but for some people this might actually be useful. people these days can find a way to complain about anything...

For everyone that thinks this is stupid, the computer gets the car centered between the lines which is a lot more than I can say for the cars that I park next to. Yes you can do it faster yourself, but don't complain when I ding your doors because you're on the line.

I could see this feature having use at night parallel parking in a city you are visiting and coming from an area where parallel parking is not as frequent. Especially if you have luggage in the trunk ex, I live in Winston Salem NC Grandparents in Philly PA. Once you learn to trust the system. It might be as quick as you modulate the accelerator and brake.

My daughter followed me up to our cabin in the Pocono Mountains. The trail, its not the Rubicon, nor is it a little hill. It is a nice dirt road with a 35 degree slope. It was snowing, my Jeep Cherokee has no problem, the Cherokee was right on my tail and did not struggle...ITS JUST THE LOOKS MAN! ITS THE LOOKS!

Contrary to Mike, Mark and others down the list, I'm glad this is available. While people who can't parallel-park probably *shouldn't* be on the road, we all know they're going to be there anyway. I'd rather there be cars with this feature available to them, than to deal with the repair cost of them backing into my vehicle because they don't know what they're doing.

For this function, it comes in the technology package which includes parking distance sensor, adaptive cruse control and lane departure warning which I think are very useful. All the sensors needed for auto-parking is already equipped in order to achieve above function so its not like you are paying extra for it. So just consider it as a bonus!

I don't mind the front end now. But the back end needs some major tweaks. First move the license plate onto the tailgate and off the bumper. Then tweak the tail lights to not carve out a portion of the rear window. Have a flat line for the bottom of the rear window like the Grand Cherokee.

Weird tech, I wouldn't use it myself, but I'm sure people said the same about GPS a few years back too and now almost everyone has/uses it. It's interesting at the very least to see car makers still innovating in new ways.

I agree, if they continue to use this technology in cars you should have to prove that you can parallel park a vehicle before you can use the automatic parking technology.

Lease starts at $259 per month for 36 months, but that's just starting. I'll guess you'll want something more than base. You can go to Jeeps website and build your own Cherokee and it will give you the exact numbers you need to know.

in some time you just need to say your destination to the gps system and it brings you there, sensors control the traffic and the roadnews are immediately added to the system, so that the car can bring you on the shortest way to your destination... but do you want that?

I think these technologies are great as a system to assist a driver, but not replace them. (Although I'm sure we've all observed some drivers out there that would be better off replaced or just staying at home. :) )

It does work, watch my daughter park her Cherokee. The key, is having no one standing around it, she was in her space in about 20 seconds. Which took her normally about 2 hours. It is the looks that take some getting used to, other than that its a jeep.

I guarantee they had it set up for parallel the first attempt. There is a parallel and perpendicular setting.

Part of the reason it took so long is that I didn't trust the system. The gas and brake are still completely under driver control. -Emme@TFLCar

Just pull into your parking spot. Why is so much emphasis put onto backing into a spot. Your back-up camera will prevent backing onto something and it gives you that extra confidence and fun. Years ago my husband and I coined the phrase LOLA "Little old lady Alert". Every morning these Two Little Old Ladies would take their morning walk the same time we left for work. We must have backed up onto them at least 50 times before we saw the tops of their heads. I don't like this self parking feature. Too many electronics in cars today that will go bad. Maybe that's why they have them.

I live in NYC and what people tend to do is just knock into the front and back bumper of cars with their own car and then they just keep slamming back and forth till they are parked lol. They wouldn't want this function lol. For what?

That thing is soooooo slow at parking. Where I live you'll get shot before you get into that space. During Christmas shopping season someone will get your spot while the computer is telling you to put it in reverse

Ok. Few comments. I have been waiting MONTHS for this car to be released and still no sign of it here in NJ. Number two: When I get this car, i cannot see myself using this feature. Its useless. The demographic that is buying this car is 18-30 and we all know how to park- and a lot faster then this. Still cool thou.... THANKS FOR THE VID!

Because the old cherokee needed a reverse camera... Another reason to hate on this "cherokee". Jeep has the patriot, compass and cherokee which are all car platforms and hopeless off road. Design a rugged compact suv like the XJ use to be. Here's my idea.. the patriot size body with more lift, aggressive gearing and a pentastar engine. Until that day I'll hold onto my 99' XJ because it's a better 4x4 than any current Jeep less the wrangler.. Jeep has sold out to yuppies and their starbucks latte.

Djonkie, I agree that this is a sad excuse for a Jeep and that people are entirely too dependent on electronics, but you're way off with the old Cherokee. It wasn't based off the Wrangler. Not even a little. It also had a unibody construction, so there wasn't really a frame to speak of. If you're going to piss all over this thing, you should at least be factual about it.

Who needs this shit. Parking sensors can be useful, especially in a large vehicle with poor view out the back. But if you can't even park a car, than they shouldn't have given you a driver's license in the first place. These are the kind of people that don't know how to use the clutch/throttle while releasing the parking brake on a steep hill.
