lol these comments show the worst thing about the Tacoma is its fanboys. C'mon guys let's be real here -Chevy/GM did a fine job of bringing some formidable competition to the market. Competition is a GOOD THING. Now Toyota has a reason to HAVE TO design a better truck for the market. Honestly, w/o the Colorado/Canyon, Toyota would probably have lugged on the current Tacoma for at least another 2-3 years. In the end, we have more consumer choice. And ultimately, people's wallets will speak which one the winner truly is.

Noah R Chevy ditched it's entire manual transmission engineering team back in 2010 I think? Maybe it was 2008 actually. Can't remember. But basically Chevy's theory is there isn't enough market to justify the production costs. Talk about car company suicide imo though. I'll likely never own a car without a clutch.

Dirtyharry70585 The 2.7 ecoboost would be my pick for a mid-size. That thing gets 26? mpg in the F150 and still has more torque and power (325hp/375ftlbs) than V8's with twice the displacement from a decade ago (5.4L 3valve from 2004 - 300hp/365ftlbs) and more power than even the 6.2L V10 Triton had (305hp/425ftlbs), and certainly more power than any other V6 in the segment. The fuel economy of that engine coupled with the superior performance of anything else being put in a mid-size would be the logical choice.

In reality they are all pretty good trucks. I just passed 182,230 miles on my 2005 Frontier. Sure, its not quite as good off-road as the Taco, probably not as refined as the Chevy, but I know its limits off-road, it's never broken down, and does what I demand of it. When they eventually install an nice compact turbo diesel in these models, buyers are going to have some great choices, perhaps then I'll be shopping for a replacement.

EMMA RODZ Rust on domestics is a thing of the past. Toyotas are famous for frame rust even in southern states where no snow or salt is on the roads. How do you explain that? Over 800,000 Tacomas were eyed for this issue, but Toyota never issued a recall. Denial--The Toyota Way. What "American Truck" was "beat" by Toyota for over a decade? You can't beat a thing without a proper frame.

To David Stanley- The new colorado is not a rebadged Isuzu... It only shares a couple nuts and bolts and I think the roof from the over seas version, but the frame and interior and exterior are all brand new. Frame is a smaller version of the Silverado, while the exterior is a lot sportier and great to look at, the interior relates it self to the Silverado as well with some differences. So no it's not rebadged.

Wish the prices would come back down to where they used to be without all these packages so they can be inexpensive haulers. Given GM's track record for making absolute garbage, and their ridiculous pricing, I'll be surprised if they sell half of the volume they expect to sell. The Nissan is still hands down the best value in the segment. Toyota may have a *slightly* better truck than Nissan overall, but once you add pricing the Nissan wins easily. I've owned multiple trucks over the years from all these manufacturers and my current Nissan Frontier CC 4x4 is my favorite so far. What a great truck. And yes...it's been out for 10 years but that just means the issues are worked out and the truck is almost flawless. The GM will never be almost flawless...it'll be subject to recalls and TSBs for years. Junk.

Lmao yeah over 60% of the segment's frames are just disappearing right? Dumbshit I still see '80s Toyota pickups driving up and down where I live. BTW explain a "real" truck. I hope you're not talking about a towing and hauling bc if so you're in the wrong area. And I do drive a real truck I own a Tundra. Wish I had one of these too though. And trust me my truck is very reliable, and dependable. I know I can drive it daily like I do, take it into the woods every once in a while and put it to work each weekend like it does and be worry free. Faggot
@jx906
@jx906 9 жыл бұрын
02to06TUNDRAFAN A real truck is one that looks good, is updated, offers a lot of options, and isn't considered flimsy or for girls only, like the Tacoma and the Tundra. What a bad ass you must be where you live driving a flimsy, gasoline only, wanna-be Tundra. Guess what asshat, I see 80's 70's 60's 50's and sometimes 40's (Willy's) US trucks driving around, and at least four times as many as your beloved Imperial Japanese, Johnny come lately, POS Tundra. All Fords, GM and Dodge/Ram trucks are top in reliability, and aren't famous for evaporating their frames. No need to wash those frames off in frigid weather to keep the rust from eating them, LIKE TOYOTA FRAMES NEED. "take it into the woods every once in a while and put it to work each weekend"....BWAHAHAH you're SUCH a bad ass.....NOT! Try heavy duty work in construction, oil refineries, farms, public service duty! I know for a fact the girly and flimsy Tundra will tear it's tailgate if you put more than 100lbs on it! Has your dashboard melted yet, just 'cuz? You've watched too many Tundra commercials my friend, and you are living in a marketing falsehood; the REAL trucks are out there working, not jaunting through the woods or getting groceries on the weekends! You sir, get the question: What's it like to be not only stupid, but completely and thoroughly laughable?
@blacklabel416
@blacklabel416 9 жыл бұрын
***** Lul. You hate on toyotas so much, I bet you're too poor to have driven a wide variety of trucks. First thing, the tacoma has long since overcome the frame rot problem, and is no longer an issue. I owned the last gen colorado and that piece of shit had frame rust and paint rusting out in 2 years and constant electrical issues. The tacoma is a leader in the midsize class, no horrible plastic interior like the colorados had/have, and better looking than the frontier's bland interior. It's the most reliable and extremely capable offroad. The tundra is a good truck....if you want a luxury truck for 90% road useage, I will agree that it is not good as a workhorse or as offroad capable as the first gen tundra was. "Try heavy duty work in construction" which you clearly don't do, otherwise you wouldn't be looking at midsize trucks. ALL of the major trucks out there have their upsides and downsides. "All Fords, GM and Dodge/Ram trucks are top in reliability" LOL. So that's why our work f350 powerjokes are always having engine issues right? And the chevrolets having electrical issues, and the ram having huge front end problems. Yet another dumb 15 year old fanboy who's never driven any of these trucks.

I'm just not sure how much of a small truck market there is anymore. Like your reviewers suggested, these three small offerings used to be $20-25K trucks that you wouldn't feel bad working or off-roading and returned marginally better fuel economy than the full-sized offerings. Now, gas prices are down and full-sized trucks get just as good of fuel economy for the same price as these smaller units, not to mention they can handle much larger payloads.

@mriphone1000 9 жыл бұрын
True to certain extents, but regardless I'd still go with Toyota. They have an edge on engineering particularly the engine itself, which gets me in the door, I could care less that it isn't up to par with a luxury sedan in terms of ride quality or even fuel mileage tho. That's why GM has to crank out 10 commercial for every one Toyota does and they have 60% of the mid-size truck market covered. They are also sold more vehicles than GM last year and are more finically secure.

With 22 service bays in our dealership you will find no less than 10 Colorado's filling them on any given day. We are replacing injection systems,transmissions,computer modules,and much more. This feels like a commercial for Chevy and IMO this is not a good review of these trucks. During the Review these guys really didn't say one negative thing about the Chevy. I don't care how good a vehicle is there are always compromises and negatives - why were none of these brought up? They spent plenty of time talking about negatives about the Toyota and although its an older design its proven to be a great truck over the years.

The thing I don't understand... It's a truck.. why do you want it to look and feel like a nice car.. It's a truck not a car, it's supposed to get beaten up and abused that's the point, at least with older trucks anyways.

Because that's how the average truck owner uses their truck - as a daily driver. Nobody is beating up or abusing their trucks, especially when fullsize trucks are now costing $40k to $60k.

Thanks for the review - some interesting stuff about the three trucks that were compared. It seems like the Toyota is more off road ready then the Chev and the Nissan. I like the looks of the Toyota and the general set-up. The Nissan is too low but I like the roof rack. The moon roof is not needed. The Chev is modern and good to know it gets the best gas mileage - but it is too low. I'm not fussy about how the cab slants off - that looks like it wasn't given much thought as it looks sick. A truck needs to perform the duties of being a work vehicle and off-road capacity is an important feature too... Some of the bells and whistles - like the glass roof and two way heating/cooling are items that are not too important to me at all. I would rather have front tow hooks and a rear trailer hitch. Satellite radio gets boring after a year... Air, cruise, tilt, power mirrors are great features. I could do without touch screen. In other words a truck is a vehicle that needs to do the work of a truck, and some times too much is just too much.

Thanks for finally mentioning the chassis at the end. Man does that Toyota shake a wobble over rough stuff. Excited to see how the new Tacoma works out. From what I see I like how the 2016 Tacoma looks overall. Still is a truck unlike the extremely crossover looking Colorado. Colorado should have been a boxy baby of the Silverado. Also should have got the 4.3L. Hope to see 8 speeds in these trucks eventually. There is much to be desired in this class and that's why Ford doesn't play here any more in the US. V6 Fuel economy is too close to bigger trucks to justify. The price also makes you think as well.

I love the Taco but being realistic in Denver my money is likely going to get a Frontier this year. Toyota Trucks in Colorado are priced high. The new Colorado pricing is for really rich and the Frontier is the value truck this year. Pro4X locking rear diff and lots of features for in same cases $6-8K less than the competition will get my vote every time. One can improve the suspension and throw BFG's on the Nissan and still be cheaper than the other two.

Toyotas are just not built like they used to. Plus, all they do is ride the "reliability" claim and include less perks or have crappier interiors for the same if not a way better Chevy or Nissan. Awwwe, you wrecked the front bumper on the Nissan trying to follow a Tacoma, then you remove the wind guard on the Chevy but then say the Tacoma has an unfair advantage. What I see is three trucks with an Off road package and only one can actually off road without problems which is the Tacoma and the Tacoma still has an even better off road package than the one you tested and you still said the Tacoma has an unfair advantage. LMFAO, literally LMFAO. Oh and the reason Chevy put that low wind guard on the bumper, that you guys conveniently removed; is there to save fuel. So if your going to compare fuel mileage and cheat, then at least say so. How much time did it take to remove the bumper on the Chev? Did you have to lay down in the dirt and get on your knees to take the Chevy skirt off? What was under the skirt, likely your lost manhood right beside GM's castrated testicles.? Without the wind guard on the Chevy,what is the fuel mileage??? Why put it there if its insignificant to fuel mileage??? and then claim it has better fuel mileage but then remove it for off road. Chevy you can't have both. Since when is a lazy gas pedal on the Chev a good thing. Last time I checked you pay good money to make a vehicle responsive, like a Tacoma; that used to be a performance goal for the majority of us, has that changed since the last time I took a nap? One guy here tries to explain why lazy is a good thing, I guess it saves fuel if that does it for you? Obviously, you cant save fuel and have a better responsive truck but somehow this guy tries to sell a lazy gas pedal and sell the fuel mileage, you can't have both, sorry. Why is a truck revving at 6800RPM? If Chevy is going to offer an off road package then they need to make it off road worthy, nobody offers that except a Tacoma or a 70G Raptor. If we want a truck for pavement we can all opt out of, the off road package. And you don't need to get off road tires on the Tacoma, it will still outperform the Chevy with the street tires like what is on the Chevy, then you won't have any noise on the street; if that does it for you?. You failed to mention that the Tacoma offers a softer ride, sure it won't corner as well as the stiff suspension but who said we were buying a sports car; the key word here is "Truck" remember we are buying a truck, why does Chevy pursue the car-truck scenario and then offer an off road package that makes no sense? What an Oxymoron. How much is that bumper going to cost you now? Still LMFAO Lesson learned don't try to follow a Tacoma off road unless your vehicle is off road worthy. Pro 4X, Z71 and FX4 are all oxymoron's, said to be off road packages but always fail to perform. TRD is the only off road package that actually stands for something.
@Off-Roaddotcom
@Off-Roaddotcom 9 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's quite a response. I'll try to answer your questions, or at least most of them. First off, the Chevy did have the wind guard removed prior to us receiving it; therefore, all of our testing, including fuel economy, is without the wind guard. Chevy makes no secret that this item improves fuel economy, and it suggests removing the piece for those planning to hit the dirt. It could be argued this doesn't need to be installed on the Z71 models, but since the Z71 is really more of a trim level than a true off-road package (something we noted in the story) Chevy leaves it up to the owner to decide. The Toyota we tested clearly has the best off-road package of the bunch, and although it did get slightly dinged for this in some areas (price, on-road performance), the off-road performance is what made the truck so competitive (our full story lists the order of finish). This off-road performance comes at a $3,000-plus up-charge compared to the other trucks; what would have been more comparable is a traditional TRD Off-Road package (priced at roughly $36,000 like the others) and not the next-level-up T/X Baja Series, but that's what Toyota provided. If you haven't had the chance to check it out, I would direct you to the full review on our website to get the whole story: www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/review/2015-midsize-truck-shootout-colorado-vs-tacoma-vs-frontier-54135.html?page=5.

Off-Road.com I would have liked to see what the approach angles are on the Chev and the Canyon with the wind gaurd removed. Even the down model of the TX Baja truck will likely still have better off road performance than the GM off road packages regardless. Hopefully the ZR2 will come back but with 4 doors and no tire taking up the entire box. I still use the box on my 2015 Tacoma TRD Pro, not wasted with a spare tire in the box. I have a low step in for family while maintaining gobs of clearance for off road, I have normal tires so it handles well on pavement and has very little noise. The extra cup of fuel I burn that keeps the truck responsive is well worth it over the GM having that throttle lag. The GM's pis me off, they have the creature comforts which is nice and the AWD in the Canyon would be nice but they don't offer clearance which would have to come with a low step in like on the Tacoma if I am to buy it, along with several other outdoor enthuisasts who are attracted to the smaller truck market. All GM trucks come with bumpers that literally scrape the pavement. It's a truck, why ruin it with low clearance. At least offer one model with clearance, just one. Also, did GM do their torcher testing with the wind gaurd on or off regarding ice, slush and mud build up in the undercarriage, or if we take it off, are we going to be the Guinea pigs?

I like all 3 of these vehicles as they all have their market. I even liked the Ford Ranger back in the day. I've owned Chevy, Ford, Nissan and Toyota over the years. Never owned a mid-sized Dodge, but I picked and purchased the 2015 Toyota TRD Off Road V6 4X4 5-speed auto transmission with the double cab. It was the base model with 3 or 4 packages. Originally booked in at $28K but the packages bumped it up to $35K. It fit what I want to do with a truck. Also, according to all the car buying/trading information out there, its resale loss is less than $1000 in trade-in value if I put 15K miles on it and trade it in next year. There is not another car or truck in America that can touch that. Period. I don't know about the '05 or '06 Tacoma, but the '07 Tacoma 4x4s still command $20-22K retail at a used car lot right now, and the banks will finance that amount, if it has less than 160K miles and is in "Good" condition. That's a less than 20% loss in resale value in 8 years. When Nissan, Chevy or Ford can match that, I'll buy another one and I've had them all. Not bashing their products, but if I'm going to spend $35K on a truck, well, I made my choice that's all I have to say on it.

These guys had a clear bias right from the start. To them, it’s all about new. They made a big deal about that in the video. The Tacoma and Frontier are old (“long in the tooth,” etc), while the Colorado is new. There’s little doubt they selected the Colorado. However, I selected the Toyota Tacoma exactly because it’s been on the market so long. Chevrolet has no real commitment to the mid-size market, dropping out whenever it suits them (leaving owners hanging with a dead product line - no resale value, etc). Many Toyota owners, like me, are loyal to Toyota because Toyota has so far proven loyal to them. The Tacoma is also just a darn good truck.

I test drove a Tacoma and a Colorado back-to-back. I have no idea what these guys are talking about when they say the Colorado had more of a Sedan feel and better steering response than the Toyota. Driving the Colorado felt like I was driving my Dad's Ram 1500 quad cab long bed. It was very difficult the judge the corners of the vehicle, making it feel like a much larger vehicle than it actually is (which is a mid-size pickup with the same dimensions as the Tacoma, give or take a few inches). The steering seemed very unpredictable and unintuitive, and simply changing lanes in moderate traffic was surprisingly disconcerting. Sometimes it seemed like the steering was too responsive and other times it seemed like it wasn't responsive enough. The larger bed height, while may be a benefit to some, drastically affected rear visibility. The interior was very nice. I would love to ride in a Colorado, front seat or back. You couldn't pay me to drive one every day. When I drove the Tacoma, it felt like I was driving my gf's CR-V. I could judge the corners easily, and the steering seemed very fluid and natural. Even though it's a longer vehicle than the CR-V, the visibility more than made up for it. The only issue I had with the Tacoma is the lack of a sunroof option, and they've rectified that with the 2016 model. These guys seemed to have the complete opposite experience that I had when I drove these vehicles. If you're having trouble deciding, don't put all your trust in a youtube video. Try them both and see for yourself how you feel about them, and remember that you're going to be driving and PARKING this truck every day.

The Tacoma engine is Well Known for mechanical failure, cam failure, knocking, ticking, at ALL DIFFERENT MILEAGES! Piston slap too. TSB on engine rattle due to failing cam shaft gear assembly and Toyota is still suffering with the same thing in the 2.5!! If they truly did figure out what to do with the cams on the V6, then they surely could fix it on the 2.5!! Come on, Toyota! The V6 also has a current recall on the engine of 20,000 engines for a design flaw by Toyota that leaks fuel under the hood and can cause A fire. (2014-2015) It won't be long and the 3.5 will totally change to something else. They did this to kill its production. If the engine is this great, and Toyota truly wanted the Tacoma to stand out, they would of put this engine in this truck a lot sooner. It does make more power than the 4.0, but they're afraid now because the Canyon is back, with a stronger V6, so Toyota had to step up its game. They didn't have time to engineer a COMPLETELY NEW ENGINE, think about it!! So they say ALL NEW ATKINSON CYCLE and ALL MEW ENGINE FOR 2016, and everyone believes them! This is the biggest load of Crap that anyone has ever done. Don't fall for this Crap!

***** Stop trolling Goliath the Tacoma won best truck that holds it value and got a 9.2 out of 10 for consumer reports and raved about the 4.0 engine. Said it is a great long term investment that holds its value as well. www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-double-cab/2015-toyota-tacoma-double-cab/#zipo=f66c7663ac8a4332c5d7f3d1e1c8eb7e

budcargeorge When someone speaks the truth about a Toyota it's 'trolling"... Nice try fan boy. Here's what real people (not biased entities) have to say about the Tacoma: "Now a proud owner of a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with a broken frame. The representative that we talked to at Toyota said the truck was JUNK. It did not receive a certain undercoating that happened to be a recall that we were NEVER notified of. We bought the truck used from Midstate Auto (a Dodge/ Jeep) dealership in November of 2005. They would not service the truck so we had to bring the truck to a Toyota dealer (Courtesy Toyota). They never mentioned ANY recalls or any to-do's that needed to be done. 8 Years later we find out about the undercoating issue the hard way. The frame broke on the way home one afternoon. I have been a proud owner of Toyota Tacomas since 1999 - have leased several. My son wanted to buy this Toyota and spend many years with it to get him back & forth to school/work. He is now without transportation and has no money to put towards another vehicle. When you spend $18,000.00 for a truck it should last you longer than 8 years. I have lost ALL respect for Toyota and the way they handled this situation. If we had known about the recall and ignored that then I could understand, but when you haven't been notified then it is hard to handle. The FRAME BROKE. What more should they care about, luckily no one got hurt. No longer a proud owner and love talking about my experience. Toyota has disappointed me and I share that as much as I can also." www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/toyota_tacoma.html

***** That is only a minority opinion. Consumer reports gave the Tacoma a 9.2 out of 10. Congratulations you found the 0.8/10 that had problems. Maybe we should use minority votes to pick presidents as well. LMFAO 9.2/10 stop crying and being a baby. www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-double-cab/2015-toyota-tacoma-double-cab/#zipo=f66c7663ac8a4332c5d7f3d1e1c8eb7e

budcargeorge Minority? LOL! Here's some more: "My wife bought a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. She never pulled or hauled anything with it. It has 120000 miles. Started making a whining noise. Took it to Toyota. They told me it needed universal joints that was 300.00. Still had whining noise. Took it back. They then told me it needed differential and it would be 1900.00 dollars. I told them that the rear suspension problem had to cause this problem. They told me no. This truck bottoms out when I have my grandkids in it or hit bumps on highway. This rear suspension problem is going to kill somebody then they might do something about it. They told us not to drive it out of town. But they won't give us a rental car. I don't know what to do. They don't even have a fix for the suspension yet." and another: "I took my truck in on November 17, 2014 for 2 recalls. I received a phone call from dealership that I could not take my truck off the lot due to 2 holes in my frame and truck was deemed unsafe. I was told it would take 6 to 8 weeks. I called back on the 7th week and was told 8 to 10 weeks. I called back on 12th week and was told my frame was not on but they were putting my truck on a flat bed to go to Mattapoisett, Mass where they will put on frame when frame comes in. I called back again on Wednesday 2/18/15 and was told that they have had a truck there since September 2014 waiting for a frame. I called Toyota Corporation on Wednesday 2/18/15 and was told they would have a supervisor call me back 24 to 48 hours. I just got off the phone with supervisor (2/20/15) and was told there is nothing they can do and that they are aware that the frames are backed up. They do not have an estimated time of arrival. I contacted better business bureau." and another: "Until a week ago, I respected Toyota, but they did me wrong, and I want to tell my story. If one person reads this and has a better outcome than me, fantastic. If a lot of people read this and Toyota gets slapped, then my mission will be accomplished. TL/DR: I know a lot of you have Toyotas, and I hope you are happy with them. Please get your vehicles frame checked regularly. Some models have a severe problem with frame rust, making them profoundly unsafe. Unlike other vehicle safety issues you may have heard about, there is no recall for this, and as I found out, there is no remedy for the owner either. On 12/1/2014 I took our 2002 Toyota Tacoma to our usual shop for what I thought would be regular mechanical repairs (I thought my alternator was failing). What happened was the mechanics said the truck’s frame, that huge piece of metal that everything is built upon was so badly rusted they would not even put the truck on a lift. They said they literally have had Toyota trucks break in two in their shop, while on a lift, due to rusted frames. I’m not talking about surface rust here. I’m talking about a hole big enough to pass my hand through. It turns out Toyota knows about this problem too, but somehow no regulatory action has ever occurred. No recall was ever issued. On the internet I learned Toyota ran a program (from 2009 to 2012, I believe) where they were compensating owners with these frame problems. So I called Toyota corporate. The rep confirmed there was indeed a program, and mailed owners about it several times. Mind you, I was the second owner. I emphatically told her I never received notices of the program, and didn’t know about the rust until 12/1/2014. Nevertheless, Toyota closed my case by telling me the program closed and they will take no further action. None. So what I thought was a $5000 asset is actually a $200 scrapheap that isn’t even safe to drive. Toyota knew about this material defect, didn’t care that I didn’t get the memo (the rep herself suggested these might have been mailed to the previous owner, HELLO?), and basically I showed up too late to be remedied. Needless to say, I will not be shopping for a Toyota any time soon. And I promised the rep (who was very polite, and I did not blame her personally), that I would do my best to prove to Toyota that while they may have closed their financial liability on this rust problem, they can expect to feel the impacts of bad publicity for not taking care of the customers who slipped through the cracks." Looks like the old Toyota standby of Consumer Reports is bought and paid for by Toyota. and another.... "Got a new 2013 Tacoma with a v6. At about 2500 miles engine started pinging. Took it in service at dealer. Told me they could not fix it. I called Toyota. They said it was normal. Pinging was getting worse. Went back to dealer 4 to 5 times. Ended up trading for a 2014 Toyota Tacoma and at about 2700 the engine started pinging. Took it back to the dealer 2 or 3 times. Told me they could not do anything to fix it. Called Toyota. They said it was normal. l called 3 to 4 times. Toyota would not do anything. Am out money. Toyota would do nothing. So at this time I am very mad. So I went and got a Nissan Frontier. Would like to have got a Ford 150 but would not fit in garage. Will never buy a Toyota ever after losing money on junk. Shame on Toyota. They know they have a problem..." and another... "Tacoma has a severe vibration at highway speeds since day one! We purchased a new 2014 Tacoma from Toyota of Murfreesboro, TN. On the way home we noticed a severe vibration in floor, seats and doors. Been back to dealer many times, gone through arbitration, etc. Toyota calls it a CHARACTERISTIC!" and another... "Increasing clanking for past couple months, had me about to go in for service check when we smelled then saw gas dripping underneath... Took it to my local mechanic yesterday who said left frame joint just forward of left rear leaf spring had wholly rusted out & broke, & that the couple inches of play caused puncture holes in tank itself. Est to repair $2700-3K!!! What do I care about the rusted out spare tire holder? - I could have been blown up!! Lucky Louis lives to work & play another day!!" The fact that you spread lies about Toyota reliability makes me sick. The TRUTH is, Toyota is no better than anyone else's truck. BUYER BEWARE!

For those that praise the way Toyota "takes care of their customers". Not my words, but real life accounts: "Received the recall letter for my Tacoma in July 2014. Called 802 Toyota in Berlin, Vermont for service and was told they could not look at my truck until December. At that time I did not know how bad the rust issue was or even that they had a recall underway. I took the vehicle in for inspection in August to a mechanic not associated with Toyota. I was told the vehicle would not pass inspection because the left rear shackle was rusted through and therefore unsafe to drive. Was told to take it the local Toyota dealer to have it repaired, which I did. I was told by the service department at 802 Toyota that the left rear shackle was fine but there was a hole in the frame so it wouldn't pass inspection. I have seen the shackle - it is not fine. My assumption - Toyota doesn't want to replace it now because it will be part of the frame replacement. I was then told that a new frame was needed for the truck but that I was "number 119 in line" and wouldn't get a new frame for six months. My options: park the truck for 6 months (or however long it took before they had a frame) or trade it in for something else. I asked if they would give me a loaner for that time or if they had a buy back program and was told "No, Toyota doesn't do that." They would prefer to put a $13,000 frame on my 8-year-old truck than do a buy back. Why? Perhaps because if they had to buy back all of these defective Toyotas, they can no longer promote how long their vehicles stay on the road. My truck is 8 years old, has 88,000 miles on it, and can no longer be driven. So I can let it sit for months or buy another Toyota. Unfortunately, it would have to be a Toyota because right now the truck has no value to any other dealers. But Toyota knows it is going to get a $13,000 frame. I have a suggestion for a new slogan for Toyota - "Our customers are loyal to us because they have no choice." And how is it that Toyota is able to produce plenty of frame for the new Tacomas but existing customers just have to stand in line. I would guess if I traded in my Tacoma, the local dealership would have a frame to put on it in much less than 6 months so they can put it out on their lot and sell it." 88,000 miles? SERIOUSLY? www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/toyota_tacoma.html
