The 2015 Subaru Legacy is on an all-new platform, with symmetrical all wheel drive and a high-torque lineartronic CVT. It features active torque vectoring, electric power steering, and a 3.6L boxer six with 256 hp. The all-new infotainment system includes a standard touch screen display and back-up camera. The touch screen, unlike many in the automotive world these days, is actually quite responsive.
Standard features include:
- Extensive soft-touch materials
- Eight air bags
- 60/40 split folding rear seats
- Three trim levels
The 3.6R Limited Includes:
- 18 inch alloy wheels
- Perforated leather upholstery
- Heated front and rear seats
- Rear seat climate control vents
- 12 Speaker 576 Watt Harmon Kardon Audio System
- Blind spot detection
- Lane change assist
- Rear cross traffic alert
- HID headlights
Eyesight Driver Assist System Includes:
- Adaptive cruise control (works very well)
- Pre-collision braking
- Vehicle lane departure warning
- Steering Responsive Fog-lights
MSRP as tested: $33,380

My legacy runs phenomenally great, the only problem I had to fix was getting a new alternator and now a new ball joint after hitting a really bad pothole last February. Did I mention my Legacy is from 1993. Best car manufacturers ever.

I just went out and bought this car (except I got it in black, with no eyesight cameras) and I couldn't be happier! This truly is a very well-rounded car that is extremely comfortable and drives extremely smooth. The Harman-Kardon audio system is really good and I was shocked on how spacious this car is (especially in the back seats)!!! I just wanted to thank you for this wonderful review because it really helped my decision of getting this car. This is a true review, and you make it easy for a car novice like myself to understand everything. Thank you again.

An update on my 2017 Subaru 2.5i, base model. We did not need all the extra bells and whistles, but we upgraded the interior with a Katzkin leather kit for about $400, 17" aftermarket rims, door panel guards, mud flaps, Homelink mirror, and a set of optional fog lights. Our total upgrades was about $1,200, which put the total cost around $22,000 before taxes. This was a much better option than buying the Premium model for $25,000 that had a lot of options we just don't want or really need, and still don't get a leather interior. Well, we are pleasantly surprised at how well the car runs and drives. The new chain driven CVT is much better than I thought it would be. For all of our normal driving, the acceleration is more than sufficient. In fact at only 3,000rpm, the car accelerates much faster than most normal driving we do. Initial acceleration from a dead stop does have a slight lag. However, it's mid to high acceleration band from say 20-80mph is pretty impressive. Once the CVT is locked up, it will take you from 20mph on a highway on-ramp to 70mph lickety-split. In fact it seems to accelerate onto the highway much faster and feels more stable than the Camry we test drove. The handling feels much better than a Camry, and is more inline with a Mazda 6. It is a very flat and sporty drive, yet the interior noise is very low, like a Camry. Cornering is very good, especially when you hit the accelerator on a corner, you can just feel the rear drive kicking in to push you around a corner vs plowing around a corner in a FWD only car. It is also a deceptively fast car. Because the interior is so quiet, the first time I hit the highway, I accelerated into the left lane, and found myself passing the right lane quite handily. I then realized I was going 85mph, and the car barely felt like it was going 60mph, because it such a smooth and quiet car. Part of that is the 17" rims, instead of the 18" rims on the sport models. I did notice from test driving the 17" rimmed cars do drive quieter and slightly smoother. Overall MPG is around 29-30mpg for us. On the highway alone it easily does 36mpg for those long flat road trips. Also, oil consumption is very low, which is a known issue with boxer engines. After 5,0000 miles, we did lose a little oil, but did not need to add any between oil changes. Looks like about 1/4qt loss at the most. And that is on a brand new engine that is still breaking in. As time has gone on, oil consumption appears to be less, and overall MPG's are slowly going up as the piston rings get seasoned and seat properly. So far, I would say I really recommend this car for anyone who wants an AWD family car, or just an all around good car to drive everyday.

After viewing numerous video car reviews on the net, I must state that this particular video was the MOST COMPREHENSIVE and EDUCATIONAL review from every vantage point, spanning from a thorough explanation of the suspension components to the detailed functions of the vehicle as it glides in motion!! Quite SUPERB indeed, so I HIGHLY COMMEND you for such excellence! My wife has the 2013 Subaru Tribeca with the same H-6 engine (but with the 5 speed auto trans), so I was fascinated on the attention to the detail devoted to the engine parts. With the Tribeca's rear-wheel bias of its normal torque split of 45% of the power delivery of the front wheels with 55% to the rear wheels, I agree that the throttle is touchy that can somewhat jolt one back into their seat without any wheel spin if the gas pedal is pushed too much from a standing start.

@@borger99 Now if only they could make a decent ABS system. The old stuff was horrid and dangerous. The new stuff feels generations old in speed and ability to manage wheel spin and chassis stability. It's...ok. It's ok right up until you use something far better. I have a Honda Ridgeline, and the ABS system and stability programming makes Subaru's system feel 20 years old. It also made me realize ABS based toque vectoring is not a good way to do torque vectoring. Rear diff left and right e-clutch systems are WAY better. Although...I still like old school mechanical locking diffs.

Your video reviews offer unique insight nobody else touches on, maybe because most auto journalists are not engineers. Something to be proud of. That said, something I noticed is lacking from nearly every car review I've read or viewed is the subject of rear seat head room. Being 6'1", you are well qualified to comment on the subject. I am 5'11" and find that when my butt is in the back of the seat my head hits the ceiling in most sedans, even in full size cars. But even some small cars offer good rear-seat headroom. I'd like to hear your thoughts on rear-seat head room for cars you review in the future. Thanks!

Great review! I had one of these as a loaner today while my '09 2.5i was in the shop for service. Completely different car! But in a good way. An obvious difference was less road feel, which I actually liked because my Legacy is pretty hard over the bumps. This model absorbed them better, with similarly profiled tires. While I agree with some here that it could use 50 more HP, I also felt it had enough power to be fun to drive and safe for getting on the highway, but didn't have so much as to easily get me in trouble. To your comment about how the car lunges momentarily when accelerating and switching gears: totally agree. Not sure what causes that but I did find it a little bit alarming. Made me feel that there was a temporary loss of control, which I did not like. I would like the onset of torque/HP to feel more linear.

It's great to have another engineer's perspective on a car and get down to the nitty gritty rather than other typical reviews that focus on inconsequential criteria like cup holder size etc. I'm a massive Subaru fan though... I own a 2011 Subaru Legacy 2.5 Limited. I drive over one hour to and from work each day. I love my car. In bad weather the car is a beast. I have read on here some very negative comments about Subaru and I am really confused. It's going on almost 5 years I have had my car and I couldn't be happier. I have put no money into my car besides the regular maintenance. As far as resale value, my car has almost 80,000 miles on it and it's work almost $ 13,000 which is not bad. I would 100% buy another Subaru. They are great cars.

Well thought out and produced review. You've definitely developed a really nice format/setup that's informative, thoughtful, and just the right amount of information for prospective buyers (or car geeks like myself). If this car came in a manual, I'd be considering it more seriously...I'm just one of those guys that 'needs' a manual. Otherwise, I think this is a really solid platform/sedan.

Oh.. and that “boost” you feel when you upshift is the rotational momentum of the engine and transmission dynamic components being converted into torque as the RPM reduces. Same as dropping a clutch or the F1 kinetic energy recovery system or putting an aircraft prop from fine to feather.

Just got the exact same car and coming from driving stick shift I want to say that I love the cvt, Idk why people hate it but whatever , yes I noticed that the pedal is very sensitive at my car been 15 with 80k I decided to do a tune up and I noticed that the air filter was thicker than most usual OEM filters, now I got this car for my wife so if it was mine I would have started to mod it but is not mine, I ended up getting an k&n filter and believe or not that $60 dollar plastic filter solved that problem, and yes I can attest to that cause I was like no way so i put the old filter and the pedal was touchy, whent back and put the new filter and it was gone, I didn't even said to wife about the filter and she told me that the pedal touchiness was gone, I will be getting one of this cars too soon enough, good video by the way.

that was a very good review. perhaps you should explain more of the engineering of the cars as your channel name suggests.

You should do more car reviews. Very detailed. Different from other car reviewer were they just ride the car and talk about it. While you you go under the car. Hope you can review the new wrx.

I drove the the 4 cylinder Legacy and noticed the same thing when you upshift (in regards to the feeling of a boost), it was very interesting, nothing like a turbo though.

Finally a review by someone that actually knows something about cars, other than how they drive and look.

This was a good review, I own a 13 Legacy 3.6 R limited and I love the car! your dead on about the brake pedal my is the same, the booster and master cly are made by Tokico corp. I've had a lot of friends that own older WRX model and are impressed with my 3.6 power.

What a beautiful vehicle and a review. So in depth and I have never seen anyone take actual tires off. Although, i doubt i can ever buy a car with a CVT. I guess i am still biased and narrow minded when it comes to my transmission.

You have an excellent review demeanor. I am annoyed by half of the reviews that I watch. I am inspired to quit my job and review myself:) After seeing this, I wish I had anteed up and bought the 6-cylinder! I have a 4-cylinder 2016 base model.

Excellent Review as always man. I have a legacy GT 2009 modded with about 400 to 450 bhp. Forged internals!. I will love to see subaru bringing to us that engine (flat 6) with twin turbos, even little ones in a similar approach of bmw M3 and M4, That in my opinion would be awesome!. Subaru needs to improve power in all their cars! Regards!

Interesting to see that Subaru has made a very good CVT. Seems to be preferable than many conventional slushboxs.

Maybe I'm a bit biased because I'm an engineer as well, but I absolutely LOVE your reviews. You give insight on the vehicle that no other reviewers do. Keep up the great work!

Would love an STI version of this with some brembo brakes and about 290 horse. I would also love to see in the next gen STI a flat 6 twin turbo.
